Screening on Saturday 10^th March 2018

Below is the program for the evening of Saturday March 10^th, 2018.

We return to JAFWA after a refreshing week off, though many will have attended Madfest. Let us not forget that there was an encore screening of “Mary and the Witches’ Flower” at Luna Leederville, and some of us checked out the live action version of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable down at Hoyts Carousel.

This week we will also start a new series before the Dinner Break. In order to demonstrate Japanese Culture as per JAFWA’s constitution, how better than to show the trials and tribulations of compiling a new Japanese dictionary? This rated rather high in the JAFWA surveys.

Synopsis

Sakura Quest

Yoshino Koharu is a young girl trying to look for a job in Tokyo, but is only met with a series of rejections. However, she has a seemingly lucky break when she receives a job offer to work with the tourism board of the economically struggling Manoyama village as their “Queen”. With no other choice, Yoshino accepts the offer and travels to Manoyama only to find out that she was hired based on a case of mistaken identity and that her contract term is for one year instead of the one day, as she had initially thought. With nowhere else to go, Yoshino reluctantly becomes Queen of Manoyama.

This evening’s Episode: “The Rural Masquerade”

The Tourism board prepares for the arrival of a film crew that will be using Manoyama as a location to film. Due to shortage of staff and a limited budget for the film, Yoshino and her friends agree to help the crew out. However, they quickly find out that the director is a rather eccentric man who is prone to constantly changing the plot of the film.

Knight’s and Magic

A world where medieval knights use giant robots called Silhouette Knights to fight against demon beasts, magical ravenous animals that devour everything on sight. Tsubasa Kurata is a mecha otaku from Japan who gets killed in a car accident. Tsubasa is reincarnated in this new parallel world as Ernesti “Eru” Echevallia, a boy born into a noble family. Tsubasa’s previous otaku memories inspire Ernesti into creating his own Silhouette Knight in order to defend his kingdom.

This evening’s Episode: “Trial & Error”

As a Telestale is sent to the Silhouette Knight Laboratory, the Fremmevilla Kingdom top research lab, whose Directors hope to reverse engineer it and make their own mass produced Silhouette Knights to impress King Ambrosius, Eru and the Order of the Silver Phoenix begin their work on creating newer and improved Silhouette Knights with help from Marquis Dixgard. There is still the matter of capturing the spies who help the Bronze Fang Knights and prevent any more leaks of information from the academy.

Fune wo Amu (aka The Great Passage)

Araki is a veteran editor for the dictionary department at the Genbu Shob? publishing company. He is looking for a successor now that he’s approaching retirement age. After Majime Mitsuya — a salesman who’s a poor talker — meets Masashi Nishioka — Araki’s coworker who is sociable and frivolous — Araki overhears their conversation and decides to recruit Majime into the department. The “odd couple” work together to compile a medium-sized Japanese dictionary titled “The Great Passage”.

This evening’s Episode: “Vastness”

Majime Mitsuya is a clumsy salesman for a publishing company. In another department efforts are underway to create a new dictionary. But who in this modern world has the patience, perseverence and attachment to words that would make them a good dictionary editor?

Retro – Ch?jik? Y?sai Makurosu (Super Dimension Fortress Macross)

In 1999 a city-sized alien spacecraft crashes in South Ataria Island on Earth. Over the course of 10 years the military organization U.N. Spacy reverse-engineers its technology and rebuilds the spacecraft, naming it the SDF-1 Macross. In 2009 at the launch ceremony of the Macross, a space war fleet from the alien Zentraedi arrives in the solar system and identifies the Macross as a former battleship used by their enemies. Mistakes happen. Thus begins the war between Human and Zentraedi, led by the brave crew of the Macross.

This evening’s Episode: “Phantasm”

Following a severe injury sustained in the previous episode, an incapacitated Hikaru lies in a hospital bed inside the Macross, dreaming about the previous events and his developing relationship with Misa and his ill-fated friendship with Minmay.

Made in Abyss

An orphan girl named Riko who lives in the town of ?su on an island in the sea of Beoluska. The city surrounds a strange, giant hole going deep into the earth, which is commonly called the Abyss. The Abyss harbours artefacts and remnants of a civilisation long gone, and is therefore the popular hunting spot for so-called Cave Raiders, who undertake arduous and dangerous descends into the mist-filled pit to recover whatever relics they can find. However, the deeper one goes into the Abyss, the more one is afflicted by a progressively fatal malady called the Curse of the Abyss; few who have descended into the lower regions have returned to tell of their experiences.

Tonight’s Episode: “The True Nature of the Curse”

Above in Orth, Kiyui falls ill on his birthday, following a mysterious trend called the “Birthday Death Disease” which has begun to plague the town. Jirou takes him to a caravan fleet offshore for medical treatment. Back in the Abyss, Mitty has apparently taken a liking to Riko, but Nanachi assures Reg that Mitty will not harm her.

Lupin the Third – Part 4

The internationally infamous Arsène Lupin, master thief and unrepentant womaniser, continues to seek out ever more challenging heists to pull off. With him goes an eccentric band of misfits; Jigen the scruffy sharpshooter, Fujiko the femme fatal of dubious loyalty, and Goemon the stoic swordsman. And close on their heels no matter where Lupin and his gang end up, the unrelenting Inspector Zenigata. Determined to put Lupin and his cohorts in prison for the seemingly endless list burglaries and thefts they have already pulled off.

Tonight’s Episode: “Dragons Sleep Soundly”

Fox, a dangerous mercenary, manages to steal the “Dragon’s Tail”, a top secret list of all the MI6’s secret agents around the world, taking it to his island. To take it back, Gibbons orders Nyx to retake his place in the secret service. However, Lupin too is looking for the Dragon’s Tail.

Maho Tsukai no Yome (The Ancient Magus Bride)

Chise Hatori, 15 years old. Lost, without hope, and without family, she is bought for money … not by another person, but by a non-human sorcerer named Elias Ainsworth. Though she hesitates, she begins life anew as his apprentice and future wife.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Faerie Queene”

With Matthew’s soul cleansed Renfred and Alice leave and meet the sorcerer who killed Mina. Elias informs Chise she probably only has three years of life remaining, but he believes he has found a method of preventing her death.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (God’s Blessing on this Beautiful World) series 2

Kazuma Satou wasn’t looking for anything beyond his simple high school shut-in existence. But one untimely death later and he finds himself before the goddess Aqua with the chance to be deposited in a fantasy kingdom that is in need of heroes to defeat a demon lord. Things don’t look good from the moment he arrives and so Kazuma decides to ditch the whole “save the world” thing and just try to become rich and live comfortably. Unfortunately, the various eccentric companions he is saddled with aren’t really helping with that goal.

Tonight’s Episode: “Servitude for This Masked Knight!”

As a result of a magic circle that Aqua had drawn in Keele’s dungeon, strange explosive doll monsters have started to appear, putting the town at risk. Investigating the dungeon once more, Kazuma and Darkness discover the archmagician behind the dolls to be one the Devil King’s commanders, Vanir, who has the ability to read minds.

Youjo Senki (The Saga of Tanya the Evil)

In an alternate universe similar to 1910’s Europe, in an empire torn apart by countless wars with all nearby countries. An arrogant Japanese is reborn as Second Lieutenant Tanya Degurechaff of the Imperial Army, a 9-year-old soldier girl. In search for an escape, Tanya decides to enter into the Empire’s Mages Division and fight in World War I, hoping to reach a high enough rank as fast as possible to remain far from the battlefield and in this way avoid the risk of being killed. Even if she’s now forced to speak with a young girl’s lisp, Tanya soon turns into a ruthless soldier who prioritises efficiency and her own career over anything else, even the lives of those beneath her.

Tonight’s Episode: “Beginning of Madness”

Headquarters decides that they should wipe out Dakia and turn their attention to the Entente Alliance, but are worried that the winter supplies won’t last unless they use Tanya’s battalian. Considering the possibility of the Triple Entente being allied to the Republic and/or the Allied Kingdom, Tanya realizes that Being X may be orchestrating the upcoming world war.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Diamond is Unbreakable (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Diamond is Unbreakable)

It’s the year 1999, 11 years after Jotaro Kujo’s desperate fight against Dio in Egypt. Jotaro meets with Josuke Higashikata, the illegitimate son of his grandfather Joseph Joestar. He discovers that Josuke also has the same “Stand” power and that a new threat is surfacing in Morioh City.

Tonight’s Episode: “Koichi Hirose (Echoes) / Koichi Hirose (Reverb)”

Koichi rides his bike on his way to school, and unintentionally runs over what he thinks is a cat in a burlap sack. Nearby, the cat’s alleged owner Tamami Kobayashi tries to blackmail Koichi into paying for the cat, bringing out his Stand The Lock to literally weigh Koichi down with his own guilt.
