Spring has officially sprung, and we welcome you back to JAFWA this Saturday evening.
Hopefully you did not suffer from a lack of anime over the break, as Celebrate Studio Ghibli is still at the cinemas, and even a live-action anime “GinTama” was at the cinemas. What an age we live in.
Also, it is the final days to apply to sit for the next Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT).

Synopsis

Atom: The Beginning

This series is a prequel to Osamu Tezuka’s “Astro Boy” series, depicting the events up until the birth of Astro Boy. Two prodigies, Umatar? Tenma and Hiroshi Ochanomizu, have spent endless amounts of time researching robots, eventually producing the robot A106.

This evening’s Episode: “Six is Unfit to Fight”

A106 has successfully won his first two robot wrestling matches, and is headed for the semifinals. Unfortunately two problems block this route. Firstly, the losers from the first two matches, along with a few friends, confront our heroes. And secondly a vital component of A106 has malfunctioned under the strain of combat. Can Tenma and Ochanomizu find a spare component?

Little Witch Academia

Akko Kagari enrolls into Luna Nova Academy, a school for young witches, after being inspired at a young age by a witch named Shiny Chariot, and often spends her days hanging with her classmates, Lotte and Sucy. However, she has trouble paying attention in class, doesn’t know how to ride her broom, and is often looked down upon for admiring Chariot, whom many believe gives the wrong impression about witches.

This evening’s Episode: “New Age Magic”

After the success of the Samhain Festival, Ursula-sensei thinks it may be time to tell Akko the secrets of Shiny Chariot. But then the faeries of Luna Nova go on strike, abandoning their duties and preventing the witches from using magic until they get a fairer share of energy from the Sorcerer’s Stone. Fortunately the arrival of a new teacher may provide the answer, even if it does upset centuries of tradition.

Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari (The Golden Furball of Udon Country) (aka Poco’s Udon World)

S?ta Tawara was the son of a noodle restaurant owner. Born and raised in Kagawa Prefecture (a.k.a the Udon Prefecture), he had been living an uneventful life in Tokyo as a web designer. After his father’s demise he returns home to find the restaurant having gone out of business and a young boy that he names Poco hiding there. He grows fond of him and decides to take care of him and constantly worries about what would happen to Poco once he leaves. He regrets leaving his home and his father because of his selfishness and mentions it to his big sister when she expresses her regret of being unable give their father a grandchild. His time spent with Poco often reminds him of how his father lovingly took care of him, which further adds to his regrets.

This evening’s Episode: “Dried Sardines”

After discovering that the women he fell for is both S?ta’s sister and married, the now heartbroken Hiroshi crashes at S?ta’s place, the family restaurant. While Hiroshi craves authentic hand-made udon, which brings back child-hood memories for S?ta, Poco finds that he is having difficulty maintaining human form.

The Western Restaurant Nekoya is a restaurant situated in a mundane corner of an undisclosed Tokyo shopping district which, despite its name, offers a lot of Japanese dishes in addition to Western ones. It opens during usual business hours and closed during holidays and weekends. But secretly it is open on Saturdays, as on this particular day it creates doorways to another world inhabited by elves, dragons, animal men and other fantastic creatures, who enter the restaurant and partake on its menu, with all of them becoming regular patrons.

This evening’s Episode: “Beef Stew / Breakfast Special”

A Japanese chef runs the Nekoya, a Western-style restaurant that connects to several parallel worlds once every week, bringing around all kinds of customers ranging from wizard and warriors to beastmen and dragons. One morning, the owner discovers a homeless demon girl named Aletta had wandered into his restaurant after coming across the Nekoya’s dimensional door.

In the distant future, the discovery of the new mineral Orichalt has allowed humanity to expand beyond the Sol System. On the constant lookout for Orichalt, humanity has developed I-Machines, robots that operate in extreme environments. I-Machines function by transferring a human pilot’s consciousness into the robot’s operating system. While Alliance Academy student Maya Mikuri is in the middle of operating an I-Machine, she gets involved in an incident with pirates, and ends up serving as a crew member on an excavation company’s spaceship.

This evening’s Episode: “Ore with Free Will”

Having barely escaped the warping planetoid, the spaceship Stulti warps back into normal space, but the threatening planetoid appears to be following them. They think that it may be linked to the mysterious girl, to whom they have given the code name Ore. Maya suggests that someone’s memories are also contained within the Orichalt they retrieved from the planet.

Lupin the Third – Part 4

The internationally infamous Arsène Lupin, master thief and unrepentant womanizer, continues to seek out ever more challenging heists to pull off. With him goes an eccentric band of misfits; Jigen the scruffy sharpshooter, Fujiko the femme fatal of dubious loyalty, and Goemon the stoic swordsman. And close on their heels no matter where Lupin and his gang end up, the unrelenting Inspector Zenigata. Determined to put Lupin and his cohorts in prison for the seemingly endless list burglaries and thefts they have already pulled off.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Magician’s Left Hand”

Lupin’s on-again-off-again femme fatale Fujiko Mine seems to have fallen in love with Luca, a young circus performer. Who is heir to the secrets of the famous magician Tony Belcastro

Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho (Starting the Magical Book from Zero/Grimoire of Zero)

Zero is a witch who is ignorant of the world and travels with a half-beast half-human mercenary who longs to be human. Witches and their sorcery are notorious throughout the land, though knowledge of the existence of magic remains elusive. Zero is going on a journey to search for a magical tome called “The Book of Zero” that hides a power that can destroy the world. The mercenary travels with her as her guard.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Road to Latette”

After settling some business in Formicum, the group continues their journey. Zero continues growing from her sheltered life, getting the hang of money, yet she tries to understand what a “kiss” is from an embarrassed Mercenary.

Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (God’s Blessing on this Wonderful World)

Kazuma Satou wasn’t looking for anything beyond his simple high school shut-in existence. But one untimely death later and he finds himself before the goddess Aqua with the chance to be deposited in a fantasy kingdom that is in need of heroes to defeat a demon lord. Things don’t look good from the moment he arrives and so Kazuma decides to ditch the whole “save the world” thing and just try to become rich and live comfortably. Unfortunately, the various eccentric companions he is saddled with aren’t really helping with that goal.

Tonight’s Episode: “Explosion Magic for This Formidable Enemy!”

With the excitement of the cabbage festival behind them, Adventurers find that monster hunting quests declining due to one of the Devil King’s generals moving in nearby. Aqua needs to make money, Darkness is off to do strength training, and Kazuma accompanies Megumin as she practices her explosion magic on a seemingly abandoned castle.

S?ta Mizushino is a young high school student and anime fan who dreams of writing his own light novel. While looking to an anime for inspiration, the iPad he is watching it on sputters and drags him into the anime’s world, where he witness a battle between the anime’s character Selesia and a mysterious girl wearing a military uniform. After returning with Selesia, S?ta discovers that other characters from different stories and forms of media were also brought to the real world, with some of them aligned with the military uniform girl, who promised them the ways to end the strife in their worlds and a way back home, unaware of her true intentions.

Tonight’s Episode: “Freeze, Die, Come to Life! We know exactly how you think and how you’re fighting !”

Alicetaria, still believing Meteora to be responsible for Mamika’s death, fights against her while Magane holds off Y?ya. S?ta tries to stop her by telling her how much he loves her story, but this doesn’t persuade her. Things escalate as Selesia then arrives with Takashi, Masaaki and the military and fights Alicetaria. Selesia’s creator Masaaki thinks he can gibe Selesia a boost.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Stardust Crusaders (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders)

It’s 1989. Fifty odd years have passed since Joseph Joestar did battle with the immortal Pillar Men and now his Japanese grandson, Jotaro Kujo, finds his life turned upside down. A strange new ability awakens within his bloodline, granting him great power but threatening to kill his mother.

… An ancient enemy of the family has returned.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Miasma of the Void, Vanilla Ice, Part 2”

To the shock and horror of Polnareff and Iggy, Vanilla Ice and his stand Atum have disintegrated Abdul. Polnareff and Iggy flee from Vanilla Ice yet head straight towards DIO. The murderous fanatic Vanilla Ice will allow nothing to interrupt the one he worships and adores, and will destroy our heroes bit by bit.
