Japanese Film Festival

Lets repeat this – October 29th to November 2ndJapanese Film Festival – Hoyts Carousel & Hoyts Millennium. see schedule

Some seriously good stuff is going to be shown. Not a lot of anime, but “Patema Inverted” is good.
Note: several of the live-action movies are based on anime – “rurou ni Kenshin” anybody?
Though “Kiki’s delivery Service” is based off of the book, not the anime.

Synopsis

Fairy Tail

Magic and mayhem in the nation of Fiore. The members of the infamous mage’s guild Fairy Tail spend their days sorting out problems for the residents of Magnolia and battling the odd apocalyptic demon or dark guild. Of course they don’t let little things like that get in the way of having fun.

Tonight’s Episode:The Right to Love

The Tenrou Tree has been restored, thanks to an act of repentance by Ultear, and Master Hades has been dispatched by Laxus, Natsu and the others. He is a bad loser though, promising to return and get revenge after Master Makarov spares his life. But he may not get the chance, whilst Fairy Tail are celebrating their victory and relaxing in their usual out-of-control way, Zeref has snuck on board the retreating Grimoire Heart sky-ship, and there, before the remnants of the Dark Guild, he declares an end to this age. The summoning of Acnologia.

Barakamon

Seishuu Handa is a new rising star in the world of professional, artistic, calligraphy. But when his pride and temper land him in trouble, he finds himself cooling his heels on the quaint little island of Gotou. Seishuu quickly finds the island’s residents to be both infuriating and invigorating in equal measure. Especially the diminutive Naru Kotoishi.

Tonight’s Episode:Yakamashika (Annoying)” finale

Handa has now settled in to his new home on the island, and even found inspiration for his calligraphy from the antics of the locals. Still, he doesn’t feel that anything he has produced so far is good enough. But peace and quiet, and concentration, will not be his. The Village Chief and his wife are trying to guilt their son into bringing some more food to Handa, and Naru has shown up with even more ‘guests’; Miwa and Tama the two girls Handa unknowingly kicked out of their ‘base’ when he moved in.

Sword Art Online, Season 2

It has been a year since the victims of Alfheim Online were freed from their virtual prison, and more than a year since Sword Art Online was shut down. But now it has begun once again. A mysterious figure has been making appearances in the game Gun Gale Online, and other players drop dead in their wake. Kirito finds himself once again risking his life in the online world.

Tonight’s Episode:Memories of Fresh Blood

Sinon (Asada Shino in real life) is quite the sniper in GGO, even managing to win an impromptu duel with a minigun wielding opponent, although not without injury. But it seems that in the real world, Shino is not quite as fond of guns. A fact that a few bullies from her high school decide to exploit until a fellow GGO player comes to her rescue. Meanwhile, during a quiet moment in ALO, Kirito has finally decided to let Asuna know of the request from Kikuoka to investigate Gun Gale Online and the mysterious Death Gun.

Zankyou no Terror (Resonance of Terror)

Tokyo is under attack, from a pair of terrorists referring to themselves as ‘Sphinxes’. With a series of complicated riddles uploaded to the internet as the only warning of when and where each attack will take place the police scramble to protect the city. But there may be more to these terrorists than their appearance, or their dehumanizing names, suggest.

Tonight’s Episode:Break Through

Shibazaki shows he deserves his nickname ‘Razor’, getting confessions from witnesses and solving the Sphinx’s riddle. Although not without threatening them over the nuclear device he knows they stole. Despite being pleased that the police have made that connection, Nine is still struggling with his traumatic memories of the facility he and Twelve were raised in, and the fact that no one else escaped. And Lisa, someone else with a traumatic upbringing, has now fled her home and is wandering the streets.

Genshiken Nidaime (Genshiken Second Season)

The old guard have graduated and now only Ogiue, Ohno and Kuchiki remain. As a new year begins Genshiken is once again infused with new members, who bring with them their own quirks, tastes and personal baggage with which to befuddle, bemuse and entertain the rest of the club. The Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture (Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyukai, Gen Shi Ken) is back.

Tonight’s Episode:White Gate Keeper

Hato and Madarame have bonded further, this time due to the hentai game from Kohsaka’s company, and Hato has decided to try and do a non-BL manga for the Uni Fair. The talk also gave Hato some concerns, because although he promised to at least attend the fair, Madarame is talking about changing jobs and finding something away from the university. But a more immediate problem for Ogiue and Hato is Hato-s BL fixation. Everything he draws whilst cross-dressing still ends up pornographic.

Shingeki no Kyoujin (Attack on Titan) OVA

The entirety of mankind lives encased within a series of fortified walls which protect them from the Titans, giant humanoid monsters who devour people, that roam the world beyond the outer wall. But now, after nearly a hundred years of relative safety, new Titans have appeared. The security of the walls is a thing of the past, and mankind may be facing extinction.

Tonight’s Episode:Distress

During the course of their training, Eren and his fellow recruits went through many different trials. One particular exercise was wilderness survival, learning to get by without the infrastructure of the corp, as they might have to do in any long period without conflict or Titan attacks. A key part of wilderness survival is teamwork, something both Jean and Eren have trouble with, especially when they are forced to work with each other. Much to the dismay of Marco, their team captain.

Sidonia no Kishi (Knights of Sidonia)

A thousand years after mankind fled Earth, Sidonia is a vast colony ship traversing deep space. The people within, genetically altered to contend with the harsh demands of space travel and Sidonia’s limited resources, live under a military dictatorship. Nagate Tanikaze however knows almost none of this, he has spent his life in the service tunnels of the ship, training in mecha combat simulators. When he is finally found by the rest of the Sidonia’s population, Tanikaze finds himself inducted into their military to help defend the colony ship against monstrous beings known as Gauna.

Tonight’s Episode:Returning to the Ship

Even equipped with the experimental Kabizashi cannons, the Gardes pilots were no match for the Gardes-Gauna hybrid, dubbed Benisuzume, and an entire platoon was eliminated. Now, lacking the manpower and firepower to wipe out the titanic gauna’s propulsion and weapons, the Sidonia has bet everything on blasting an opening to its core to allow the remaining platoon to kill the master gauna. Whilst the immortal council prepares to abandon ship, leaving everyone else to die, in case the plan fails.

preview – Akame ga Kill

Tatsumi was hoping to find enough money in the capital to save his poverty stricken village, what he found instead was corruption and slaughter. The prime minister is the power behind the throne, manipulating the infant emperor for his own gain, and the common folk of the empire suffer under his reign. A group of assassins known as Night Raid prowl the city, leaving a trail of corpses in their wake. But as Tatsumi quickly discovers, they may be the only hope the empire has.

Tonight’s Episode:Kill the Darkness

Monsters abound out on the open road, but they are no match for a competent swordsman such as Tatsumi. The travellers he saves are grateful for his help and readily offer him advice – don’t go to the capitol, there are worse things within its walls than dragons. Tatsumi is too full of confidence and optimism to heed their words, but it turns out becoming a high paying officer in the army isn’t as easy as turning up and waving your sword around.

No Game No Life

Siblings Sora and Shiro have spent their life in games, rejecting the complications of the real world in favour of virtual ones and gaining a phenomenal reputation for their unbeatable teamwork. But when they reply to a strange email they find themselves transported to a world where everything is decided by games. It’s time to put their skills to the ultimate test!

Tonight’s Episode:Grandmaster

Yet more cheating from Kurami, this time on a life-sized chess board where the pieces have a will of their own. But Sora has the hang of boosting the morale of his troops, so Kurami is forced to gamble on an even bigger bit of cheating, mind controlling the white chess pieces. But since the Blanks don’t actually have magical backup, the gamble pays off. At least at first. A suitably dramatic appeal breaks the mind control and flips the black queen over to the white side. And so Sora sets out on his new strategy; to win without fighting.

Kill la Kill OVA

Ryuko Matoi is a girl on a mission; to find the person responsible for her father’s death. Her search has led her to Honnouji Academy, a brutal, totalitarian school where the student council, led by Satsuki Kiryuin and empowered by their Ultima Uniforms, rule over everyone else. Ryuko quickly finds herself at odds with Satsuki’s dictatorship, but aid comes to Ryuko both from unexpected allies within the school … and a set of skimpy talking clothes.

Tonight’s Episode:The Last Goodbye

The battle is over, Ragyou is gone, the life fibres have slowly died away without their hosts, and now it’s time for the graduation ceremony at Honnouji Academy. But first, Sanageyama has a score to settle. He wants his rematch with Satsuki, something he put on hold once joined the student council. But as the battle comes to a close both Sanageyama and the various onlookers have realized something, Satsuki has lost the fire and passion that once drove her to lead the school and defy her mother.
