Screening of Saturday 9th June 2024

Screening on the evening of Saturday, June 9th 2024

As the Australian Bureau of Meteorology tells us, it is now officially Winter. And as the June darkness and rain descends upon, it is ever more required that we warm our souls by anime’s satisfying glow, in the company of your fellow otaku.
I probably won’t need to remind people that JAFWA is currently operating on Winter hours. Just continue coming about 4PM with preparations to go home at about 9:45PM. This situation will continue through to September. Blame it on the lack of daily sunshine and warmth.

Excitement abounds this week, with one regular series ending and three (3 count them 3) new regular series starting this week at JAFWA. Unfortunately that means that we will not have any room for a preview episode this week, but then again your dutiful committee members need some time to browse through the great crops of anime produced in Japan and winnow it down to a few, worthy anime previews.

There is still some discussion about which 3 regulars series start this week, but tentatively:

  1. Where Does the Doomsday Train Go?“, where some rural school-girls go on an odyssey to Tokyo to find a friend before the doom of this post-apocalyptic world embraces them.
  2. Spice and Wolf” a remake of a beloved series where a medieval merchant hosts the travels of the Wise Wolf Holo.
  3. And towards the end of the night shall be “Witch and Beast” in a world where witches are rightly feared, something more fearsome hunts them.

A fixture of the Perth fandom scene for many years, and a long-time supporter of JAFWA, we are saddened by the news that Tokyo Underground is closing. Their final day of trading is going to be at the end of this month, June 30th, and they have already begun marking down prices for the final sale.

TU closing

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay did in March, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan in advance please.

The other big decision coming up is the JAFWA annual election to be held during the Dinner Break of the JAFWA screening of July 20th. This will be later in the evening after the AGM that we need all signed up JAFWA members to attend when it starts in the afternoon at 2PM in the same Hall.

Expected program for the evening of Saturday June 9th, 2024.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)

Frieren

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

Later it is Frieren who is mistaken for a Hero, and sent off to slay the monsters.

Where Does the Doomsday Train Go? (“Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?”)

In a town in a not-so-ordinary countryside, there is a big and strange occurrence happening to its residents. But a young girl named Shizuru Chikura has a strong desire to see her lost friend again. They’ll discover what awaits them at the last stop of the “Doomsday Train.”

This Evening’s Episode:I’ll Be Going Now

Two years after the disastrous launch of an experimental 7G cellular network that warped reality, Japan has been left devastated with civilization reduced to various scattered, isolated settlements. Strange phenomena are now commonplace throughout the country such as the people of the town of Agano being transformed into intelligent animals once they reach the age of 21. Shizuru Chikura, Nadeshiko Hoshi, Reimi Kuga, and Akira Shinonome are four students native to Agano who are left to wonder about their future, knowing they will inevitably turn into animals as well once they come of age. They then find a newspaper showing that their missing classmate Yoka Nakatomi is still alive in Ikebukuro, but have no way of getting there.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode:Raw Fish

Gaoshun enlists Maomao’s help in investigating a case involving a bureaucrat who falls into a coma after consuming raw fugu seasoned with vinegar, similar to an incident ten years ago. Meanwhile, Jinshi reveals that the high military official Lakan comes complaining to his office about him appointing someone connected to the Rokushoukan as his servant.

She strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing.
