You know it is truly Spring when you discover that the cherry trees up the road from the JAFWA screening are blooming Sakura. I wonder how long the Sakura blossoms will last? I only saw them after the Sun went down, they must be spectacular by daylight.

After some deliberation (to use the polite term), your beloved JAFWA committee has decided on all the new shows that start as regular series this coming week. Because two of these new series were previewed last month, some hand-polling the audience last week indicates overwhelmingly that we start “Bye Bye Earth” at episode #2, and that “Kaiju No.8” by just a narrow margin starts at episode #1.
And in our attempt to finish series before the long end of Year break, one of the new regular series this week will have two episodes shown. Which series would you have wanted two episodes of?
It is almost enough to distract you from the melancholic news that the “Doomsday Train” series will reach its final destination at the end of the line this week.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay did in March, and the one coming in November, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan in advance please.

And there is the end of year irregular screening to consider. What do you want to see in it?

‘Tis Time for “Torture,” Princess (Hime-sama Goumon mo Jikan desu)

In an ongoing battle between the humanity’s Imperial Army and the demonic Hell-hordes, the princess from the army has been captured along with her holy sword Ex. Since regular torture is prohibited by the prisoner of war treaty between the two parties, the grand inquisitor, Torture Tortura, employs unusual “torture” (in air quotes) techniques.

This evening’s Episode: “episode 6“

The Hell-Lord promotes his daughter for her performance, and as a reward, he plays games with her. Princess realises the nature of the “torture” so far, before Tortura walks in with a smoldering hot iron. Tortura enters to draw some blood for a medical checkup, the princess, being afraid of needles, receives an anesthetic patch in exchange for a secret. The would-be hero Louch Brittan returns to rescue her.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren)

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

This Evening’s Episode: “First-Class Mage Exam“

On the road to Äußerst Fern and Frieren discuss the rarity of first class mages and the difficulty of obtaining the certification to become one. Fern feels uncertain that she could pass the exam, but Frieren lets her know that mana capacity is not everything and that she herself has lost eleven times to people with a lower mana capacity than herself. Fern and Frieren arrive at the association and manage to sign up for the first class exam. After preparing for two months, they take the exam.

Where Does the Doomsday Train Go? (“Shuumatsu Train Doko e Iku?”)

In a town in a not-so-ordinary countryside, there is a big and strange occurrence happening to its residents. But a young girl named Shizuru Chikura has a strong desire to see her lost friend again. Shizuru and three other girls board an abandoned train, and they set out to the outside world, where survival is not certain. They’ll discover what awaits them at the last stop of the “Doomsday Train.”

This Evening’s Episode: “What Was Normal Again?” finale

Realizing that they need Yoka to push the 7G button to shut it off, the girls, Mito, and the zombies chase Pontaro in the Apogee as he tries to fight them off, aided by Chaos and the Boss. The girls manage to board his train and confront him. Pochi, having stowed away, then arrives and turns on Pontaro and throws him off the train when he admits that 7G is slowly sapping away Yoka’s life, stating he is only loyal to Yoka.

Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf (“Ookami to Koushinryou: merchant meets the wise wolf”)

The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact with which Kraft Lawrence is well acquainted. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares have come his way, the peddler has pretty well settled into his routine—that is, until the night Lawrence finds a wolf goddess asleep in his cart. She strikes up a bargain with the merchant to lend him the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits in exchange for taking her along on his travels. Lawrence soon learns, though, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a bit of a mixed blessing.

Tonight’s Episode: “New Town and Nostalgic Feeling“

It is a chilly trip on the road to Kumerson, and Holo needs a costume upgrade. The politics of snack money for the upcoming market and festival. A fortunate encounter with the fellow merchant Fermi Amati. And finally a skill the wise Holo lacks. Now to make a profit. Slowly they approach Holo’s home of Yoitsu.

Bye Bye, Earth (“Bai Bai, Aasu”)

Despite having incredible fighting skills and the strength to wield the enormous sword Runding, Belle Lablac has grown up as an outcast due to being the only human in a world of anthropomorphic animals. Desperate to find a place where she belongs, she goes on a quest to find others like her.

Dinner Break Episode: “Departure at the Red Hour“

A giant squid-like monster enters and contaminates a lake, so the villagers request aid. Belle Lablac arrives, but the villagers fear her for her human looks. She slays the monster with her incredible strength and her sword Runding as it says it only wanted to return to the sea and spread its eggs. Her teacher Sian advises her to take the test to become a Nomad so she can find where she belongs, as he has never seen creatures like her before.

Tonight’s Episode: “Wherefore in the Earthshine“

Belle reaches the field of rocks where she was supposedly born and befriends a seemingly mute rabbit boy. She goes to her hometown, Park City, and enters a tavern, remembering killing Sian. Some troublemakers attack the rabbit so Belle defends him, but finds that her sword becomes dull every time she tries to use it against a living being as part of Sian’s curse.

Go! Go! Loser Ranger! (“Sentai Daishikkaku”)

Thirteen years ago, the Villainous Army of Evil attempted to invade Earth, faced by the Super Sentai squadron known as the Divine Dragon Rangers and their super weapons, the Divine Tools. The evil army, however, was defeated within a year, all of its Executives wiped out, and the surviving (and almost immortal) foot soldiers have been forced ever since to reenact their defeat to the Keepers in front of a crowd of spectators every Sunday. Until one foot soldier rebels.

Tonight’s Episode: “Fighter D, as a Part of ‘Ranger Force‘”

A disguised D is living at the independent Ranger’s HQ. He carelessly smashes Hibiki’s laptop which contains all the information Hibiki left behind. D meets Hibiki’s sister, who is revealed to be the Pink Keeper Sesera. He runs back to his room and goes to investigate a noise coming from his closet. A female Duster Hibiki has been hiding in his room pops out and attacks him.

KonoSuba: God’s Blessing on This Wonderful World! (Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku o!) season 3Kaiju No.8 (“Kaijou Hachigou”)

The story follows Kafka Hibino, who after ingesting a parasitic creature, gains the ability to turn into a kaiju, he must now navigate using his power while trying to become part of an organization that eliminates kaiju to fulfill a promise he made with a childhood friend. Now he’s made the Defense Force’s neutralization list under the code name Kaiju No. 8.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Man Who Became a Kaiju”

Kafka Hibino works as a cleaner disposing the carcasses of Philinosoma and other kaijus after they have been eliminated by the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, a military organization that protects Japan from kaiju. Initially wanting to be part of the Defense Force, Kafka gave up after failing to pass the exam before he got too old. At work, Kafka and his new coworker and aspiring Defense Force Member, Reno Ichikawa, survive a minor Kaijuu. However, Kafka is attacked by a parasitic kaiju that enters his body through his mouth and turns him into a human-kaiju hybrid.

Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Zom 100: Zombie ni Naru Made ni Shitai 100 no Koto)

Surviving a zombie apocalypse beats being a wage slave any day. After spending years slaving away for a soul-crushing company, Akira’s life has lost its luster. But when a zombie apocalypse ravages his town, it gives him the push he needs to live for himself. Now Akira’s on a mission to complete all 100 items on his bucket list before he…well, kicks the bucket.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Akira of the Dead” and “Bucket List of the Dead“

Akira Tendo is a young office worker who hates his job. Three years ago, an excited Akira came to Tokyo to work after graduation but increasingly becomes disillusioned after learning his company ruthlessly exploits their employees. Despite being depressed, he continues to stay due to his coworker, Saori Ohtori, the only one who treats him with kindness. When a zombie outbreak hits Tokyo, rather than despair, Akira greets it with happiness since he is finally free from exploitation. He heads to Ohtori’s apartment to rescue her only to discover he was too late as she and his boss have turned into zombies.
Akira starts to revel in his newfound freedom by drinking beer in the morning. However, he soon realises that he has run out. Sneaking off to a convenience store, Akira meets another survivor scavenging the place, who admonishes him for only taking items she considers unnecessary for survival. She takes off after she saves his life. When he finally returns home and retreats to his apartment, he solemnly reflects on his situation. As such, Akira writes down a bucket list of 100 things he wants to do before he becomes a zombie.

Chainsaw Man (Chenso Man)

In a world where Devils (??, Akuma) are born from human fears. Devils are usually dangerous and malevolent, their power is proportional to the fear they incite. However, humans can form contracts with them to use their power, and there are individuals specialising in hunting and employing them, called Devil Hunters. A Devil may, in certain conditions, inhabit the body of a dead human, gaining some of their memories and personality; such a creature is called a Fiend.

Tonight’s Episode: “Dog & Chainsaw“

16-year-old Denji has been burdened with a massive debt left behind by his deceased father, who committed suicide. To repay the debt, he works as a Devil Hunter with Pochita, the dog-resembling Chainsaw Devil. After finishing a job for a yakuza boss, Denji tells Pochita about his dream to live a peaceful life and settle down with a partner. The boss takes Denji to an abandoned warehouse for a job, where he reveals his group has allied themselves with the Zombie Devil, who has Denji dismembered. Denji’s blood seeps into Pochita’s mouth, and Denji has a vision of Pochita telling him that he will become Denji’s heart in exchange for seeing Denji live out his dream.
