Screening on the evening of Saturday, May 25^th 2024

And thus May comes to an end and you know what that means – it is the monthly Member’s Prize draw! Also, we will be having quick survey during the Dinner Break to see which items are enjoyed by the membership, so please be honest and scalar. I probably won’t need to remind people that JAFWA is operating on Winter hours. Just continue coming about 4PM with preparations to go home at 9:45PM. This situation will continue through to September. Blame it on the lack of daily sunshine and warmth.

Once again apologies that we did not screen “Demon Slayer” last week. We didn’t screen it the first week of May because for some reason it didn’t show in Japan. It showed in Japan last week, but we found out too late that it was a double-length episode, so we couldn’t fit it in the program last week (instead showing an extra episode of “Oshi no Ko”). Hence we screen it this week!

A fixture of the Perth fandom scene for many years, and a long-time supporter of JAFWA, we are saddened by the news that Tokyo Underground is closing. Their final day of trading is going to be June 30^th, and they have already begun marking down prices for the final sale.

This week our JAFWA program has some excitement, in the form of:

• If all goes according to schedule the the fourth and final series of “Demon Slayer” will begin screening this week, as we enter the Hashira Training story arc.
• A preview episode for inclusion in the survey, about youthful grandparents.
• We farewell our beloved “The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today” with its final episode.
• And finally, we begin the complete the awesome “Attack on Titan” series with the first of two conclusionary movies (the second in June).

• Starts Thursday May 30^th 2024 — Based off of an anime series that JAFWA did not screen is the animated movie ” HAIKYU!!: THE DUMPSTER BATTLE” expected in various cinemas.
• Weekend June 29^th-30^th 2024 — Supanova – Perth at Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.
• Monday July 8^th 2024, ~6:30PM — Luna Double Feature at Luna Cinemas Leederville – “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind” and “Ponyo” $15.
• Weekend July 13/14^th 2024, 9AM-4PM — Anime in the Valley at Swan Settlers Market in Herne Hill. It is a bit of a hike so make certain to leave early to reach JAFWA in time (Winter hours).

Non Non Biyori Nonstop (season 3)

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “It Was a Thrilling Autumn“

It is parents day at Asahigaoka Branch School, and the presence of Yukiko Koshigaya (Natsumi, Komari, and Suguru’s mother) makes both Natsumi and Kazuho nervous. Renge and Shiori (daughter of resident police officer, episode 4) play with a ball together, and it somehow turns into a philosophical discussion. Natsumi and Renge set up a fish-tank for Salt, a crab the younger girl wants to keep until the weather warms up again.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (S?s? no Fur?ren)

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye.

This Evening’s Episode: “Phantoms of the Dead“

For the journey to the Demin King’s castle, Frieren acknowledges ten years is potentially a tenth of Fern’s lifespan but Fern decides to follow her. A short way into the journey they enter a village where several people disappeared after seeing ghosts of their deceased relatives. Frieren suspects an Einsam, a monster that lures victims with illusion magic.

preview – Grandpa and Grandma Turn Young Again (“Jii-san Baa-san Wakagaeru”)

An elderly couple, Shozo Saito and Ine Saito who live in a small town in Aomori Prefecture. One day while checking their apple farm they notice a golden apple growing in one of the trees. After eating that apple, the two found themselves physically restored to their 20s.

Tonight’s Episode: “Grandpa and Grandma and the Sports Festival“

60 years ago a poor couple could not afford a honeymoon now find that their marriage apple tree has sprouted a golden apple. Which has an amazing effect, which has some odd knock-on effects, especially with family. But this youthening might be just the town needs for the inter-town sports festival needs. Love and War down the generations.

The Masterful Cat is Depressed Again Today (Dekiru Neko wa Kyou mo Yuuutsu)

One day, a young woman named Saku took in a stray black cat who she later named Yukichi. However, as time went on, Yukichi grew large enough to be mistaken for a bear. Instead of being a threat though, Yukichi spends his time cooking food, doing laundry, and taking care of his owner after she comes home from hard days at work.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Tomorrow As Well” finale

Dai-chan the kitten rescued by Yukichi and Yume-chanis trying to emulate their ideal “person”, and getting some publicity. Meanwhile Yume-chan and Yukichi bond over the love of the UMYU-Sea idol group. But what of his useless human, who is forgetting nouns? Let alone cook lunch. The path to masterfulness is long and hard. And so lifr with his worthlrss human goes on.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto)

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favorite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “The New Pure Consort“

Maomao, on Gyokuyou’s recommendation, is tasked with educating the new Pure Consort Loulan and Wise Consort Lihua on “serving” the Emperor. Jinshi formally assigns her the responsibility. The next day, Maomao, wandering near the scene of the incident while being sidelined with getting medicinal herbs, impromptu investigates and suspects arson.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba) – season 4

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “To Defeat Muzan Kibutsuji” – Hashira Training arc

While on a mission to rescue a kidnapped woman from a demon, Wind Hashira Sanemi Shinazugawa and Serpent Hashira Obanai Iguro encounter an entrance into the Infinity Castle before it suddenly vanishes. During an emergency meeting led by Kagaya’s wife Amane Ubuyashiki, the Hashira discuss the mysterious marks that appeared on Mitsuri and Muichiro in their battles, which were said to have originated from the Demon Slayers during the Sengoku period.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 4 final part

Young Eldian Warrior candidates Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, seeking to inherit Reiner’s Armored Titan four years after the failed mission to claim the Founding Titan. As Marley’s dominance over competing nations begins to weaken due to the development of anti-titan weaponry, they plan to invade Paradis to develop their military using the resources on the island and also recover the Founding Titan. However, Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps have reached the Marley shoreline.

Tonight’s Movie: “The Rumbling / Sinners,” part 1 of 2

The Rumbling continues, with the Colossal Titans killing countless people, including Ramzi and Halil and Grisha’s parents, and destroying civilizations all over the world. Meanwhile, the ship carrying the scouts and warriors arrive at Odiha, where the flying boat is damaged. However, before the flying boat can be properly repaired, the Rumbling arrives. Hange appoints Armin as the next commander of the Survey Corps before going up against the Colossal Titans alone, buying the others just enough time to get the aircraft off the ground.
En route to Eren, the scouts and warriors discuss plans to confront him, with Armin still believing in a peaceful resolution. During their conversation, Eren suddenly brings them into the paths dimension, explaining that in order to stop the Rumbling, they must kill him. Many refugees from Liberio, including the Warriors’ families, escape to Fort Salta, a Marleyan base. As they arrive, they see a number of airships launching an assault on Eren and his Titans. The flying boat arrives and the scouts and warriors jump from the aircraft for the final attack.
