Screening earlier on the evening of Saturday, 12^th September 2026.

Until the end of September JAFWA will be operating on Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.

Welcome to September, when the JAFWA program will be starting quite a few new regular series.

Last month the cherry trees on Collins Street were beginning to blossom, it will be interesting to see what state the two trees will be in after two weeks we were away.

This week’s JAFWA program has been tentatively decided, but be aware that last minute changes may occur. Four new regular series will be starting this week, as voted by our dear attendees, and a couple more in October. So please welcome to the program the following:

• Before the Dinner Break there will be a slice of life where a rural girl finds escape in manga, to the displeasure of her teacher.
• Next will be a mystery-solving romance between a girl who can’t see and a man who can’t be seen.
• And after that there will be a fantasy-setting where an orphaned child grows up to protect his extended adoptive family.
• Near the end of the night will be a remake of an anime shown at JAFWA, but this time it follows the original manga more closely.

With all this we still find room to insert a preview episode of anime recently produced in Japan. A high-school girl is adopted into a somewhat surprising family when her single mother remarries, and goes from being an only child to an elder sister to four distinct brothers.

On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally have done, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

Dates of Interest

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• September 7^th to 20^th 2026 — If perchance you are down South and unable to attend JAFWA, perhaps the various events that the South West Japan Festival might soothe you.
• Transformers Day September 17^th 2026 — To commemorate the 40^th anniversary of “Transformers the movie”, many cinemas will be showing a special 4K version. Ticket pre-sales start August 7^th.
• Saturday October 3^rd 2026 — JAFWA having a Bunnings BBQ fundraiser down at Cannington. Come for the sausage sizzle.
• Saturday October 31^st 2026 1pm->4:30 — JAFWA having another make your own fun Event Arvo in the Hall before JAFWA screening.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)

The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.

This evening’s Episode: “The Hero Who Saved Aug“

Due to an unprecedented rise in monsters attacking farms Emperor Claude suspects an enemy is responsible and deploys extra wizards. Athanasia learns Lucas funded her shopping trip with magical coins that disappear after 24 hours. She is forced to borrow money from Sir Felix to repay the shopkeepers. Unfortunately, this leaves her owing money to Felix, so she decides to earn money protecting farms with the other wizards.

Draw This, Then Die! (Kore Kaite Shine)

Ai Yasumi is a first-year high school student living on Izu ?shima, an island that is part of Tokyo prefecture. She loves to read manga, but a certain event triggered her to start thinking about creating manga. The world that awaits her and the pain and joy of creating works of art opens up. But that single decision sets off a chain of encounters that will shatter her assumptions about art, genius, and what it truly means to create.

This Evening’s Episode: “Magic House: What Would a Manga Protagonist Do Here?“

On an island 120km south of Tokyo, a girl with too much imagination has issues in her small town. A rental bookstore is her salvation, falling in love with manga, especially a certain title. Not that her teacher approves. But when after 10 years it is announced that a sequel volume will be released in Tokyo, there is no choice but to sneak off and get a copy. But it is all overwhelming, and meeting the author will leave her in tears.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen Dai-San-Bu Ryuushu no Youjo) season 4

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again. Now she has become Rosemyne, the adopted daughter of a Duke.

This evening’s Episode: “The Winter Social Season and Debut“

The winter social season is here and 7 year old Rosemyne must successfully finish her debut, demonstrating her noble skills. Will she outshine the other debutantes, including her adoptive brother Wilfried. Then there is grooming potential retainers. Can she get one by Lord Ferdinand?

In a world where humans, demi-humans and monsters co-exist, Shizuka Yakou is a quiet and bashful woman who works at a small detective agency. Her employer, Tounome, is the refined and courteous owner of the agency, who possesses the unusual ability to turn invisible. While his power is invaluable for investigative work, it proves ineffective on Yakou, who is blind, yet can always sense Tounome’s presence.

At the Tonome Detective Agency blind receptionist Yako-san does such a good job her boss the invisible man Tonome-san rewards her with Dinner. But is it only dinner that Tonome-san wants? A fine tangle of feelings are expressed, to amusement of fellow ewmployee Jarashi-san, and tired resignation of Kikira-san. Tonome-san also reveals his weakness to Yako.

The Cat and the Dragon (Neko to Ryuu)

Deep in a forest inhabited by ferocious beasts and magical creatures, a cat takes an orphaned baby dragon under her wing and raises it as her own child. As years passed and the cats left him behind, he grows and vows to protect them.

A Cait Sith mother takes an orphaned baby dragon and raises it along-side her kittens. This dragon grows up and shields forest cats from cruel humans. One day, one of his students befriends a kind human prince.

Nier: Automata Ver1.1a

In the year 11945 on a post-apocalyptic Earth abandoned by humanity. Earth has been occupied by aliens, who fight using an army of Machine Lifeforms. Androids, created by humans, fight against the Machine Lifeforms, with the conflict turning into a prolonged proxy war. The latest addition to the android forces is YoRHa, an elite android fighting force based in the orbital Bunker and communicating directly with the Council of Humanity on the Moon.

As children in the 19th century, Jinta and his abused sister Suzune with the bad eye flee their abusive home. Rescued and adopted by a kind sentinel of a village of blacksmiths, Jinta grows up to become the bodyguard of the lovely Shirayuki who becomes the priestess Itsukihime. Though the issues with his fellow sentinel Kiyomasu pail into insignificance against the actions of the ageless Suzune.

Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Tonight’s Episode: “Five Obstacles”

Regaining consciousness in the library, Subaru learns about the mabeast attack and that Lye has infiltrated the tower. Discovering that Lye has eaten Emilia’s name, Subaru and the others come to her aid, but it turns into a three-way battle when a third obstacle arrives: Reid. Concurrently, Subaru begins experiencing weird pains in his chest until a fourth obstacle appears: the scorpion mabeast. He then dies when the entire tower is devoured by the miasma of a final, fifth obstacle: Satella.

The Ghost in the Shell (Koukaku Kidoutai)

In a near future, technology has firmly taken root into society at large. Cybernetic implants are nothing uncommon and robots roam as plentiful as humans, all connected through their ”ghosts” to the electronic datastreams of the net. Major Motoko Kusanagi and the Public Security Section 9 find themselves in a constant battle with the newly created wave of technological terrorists and cyber-hackers.

Tonight’s Episode: “Prologue + Super Spartan i“

Public Security officer Daisuke Aramaki moves to arrest the corrupt Far East Trade Representative under suspicion of assassinating the previous Prime Minister. Aramaki is forced to let the trade representative go until the mysterious cyborg Motoko Kusanagi assassinates the latter, acting under the final orders of the late Prime Minister. She has a deal, to become Public Security Section 9. Kusanagi and her team are assigned their first mission, which is to investigate an orphanage suspected of using an illegal Ghost controller to brainwash the orphans in their care.

Tsav, an assassin of the Gwen Mohsa, was sentenced for being a serial killer with a government official among his victims. Preparations for the battle against Iblis continue as Xylo, Kivia, Dotta, and Tsav go on a scouting mission, anticipating the faeries arriving at night, while Tsav uses his sniping ability to shoot the faerie scouts. Returning to the fortress, Xylo encounters Hord Clivios, Captain of the 9th Order, and his contracted goddess Pelmerry.
