Until the end of September JAFWA will be operating on Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.

This is the last week of August and a deadline is approaching! As you know at the JAFWA AGM, it was moved that JAFWA fund the KickStarter campaign to bring about more Tenchi Muyo anime. This is being done, but there is also the opportunity for us individual members to hop on JAFWA’s KickStarter pledge and order bonus items. I, myself, am looking at getting my own copy of the BluRay, both sticker sheets, and I am currently undecided which of the patches to purchase. You too dear members can order your own bonus items, but this offer is only open until August 29^th, which is the latest we have to officially inform President Drew (who is handling the KickStarter order) and arrange to pay for the bonus items somewhat later. Are you ready to order?

Other wonderful news about this week is that the cherry tree on Collins Street was beginning to blossom last week, so should hopefully be in full bloom this week.

And as mentioned previously, this is the last week in August. As is typical at this JAFWA screening at the end of each month, we will have a couple of notable events.
Firstly during the Dinner Break we will hold the usual survey to find out what anime we have shown at JAFWA is more popular than others, both current shows and preview episode that we have recently screened that you can rate in a scalar fashion (Hindu-Arabic numerals. one-based with ascending numbers representing less popular titles). Secondly, there is the monthly Member’s Prize Draw. Please come along for both.

This week’s JAFWA program is nearly ready for September. We farewell a regular series, in this case “Dr Stone” as our protagonists have gone from the Stone Age to that immense stony satellite in the sky. We finally celebrate Patlabor Day a little late, with the movie length compilation of the first 3 episodes of “Patlabor EZY”.
There won’t be room in this week’s program for a preview episode before the Survey. Thus to not leave a gap in this week’s program we have found another OAV episode of “Golden Kamuy”. consisting of a couple of stories from earlier in the manga that weren’t suitable to be screened as a TV episode (in the first TV series). Hopefully this will partly assuage our gnawing hunger as we await the conclusion of the “Golden Kamuy” saga, whenever that shall be.

Dates of Interest

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• from Thursday August 27^th 2026 — Event cinemas will be screening the South Korean anime Your Letter at assorted cinemas. In the original Korean with English subtitles?.
• Saturday August 29^th 2026 — Final date to order bonus items through JAFWA’s “Tenchi Muyo” Kickstarter pledge. Contact President Drew, the JAFWA Shogun with details of your order.
• September 7^th to 20^th 2026 — If perchance you are down South and unable to attend JAFWA, perhaps the various events that the South West Japan Festival might soothe you.
• Transformers Day September 17^th 2026 — To commemorate the 40^th anniversary of “Transformers the movie”, many cinemas will be showing a special 4K version. Ticket pre-sales start August 7^th.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)

The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.

This evening’s Episode: “The Princess’s Adventure“

A sinister man retrieves something from Lucas’ wizard tower, intending to use it against Athanasia. Athanasia is confused to find Ijikiel in her library but Lucas interrupts, claiming Claude would not be happy Ijikiel was alone with Athanasia. As she has been invited to several tea parties Athanasia requires gifts for her friends, so Lucas helps by teleporting her from the palace to shop in town. They spot Jennette also shopping for gifts and overhear her plans to buy something from the Magic Market. Powerful black magic will become involved.

Dr Stone season 4 “Science Future” final cour

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. After the battle on Treasure Island, Senku and the gang return to the Kingdom of Science. With their sights set on the Moon, they must first voyage to the Americas in hopes of beginning to harvest the required materials. Through teamwork and science, they continue the fight to save humanity once and for all. This will involve creating a space program to go to the Moon.

This Evening’s Episodes: “Why-Man” and “Ushers of an Exhilarating Future” finale

After landing on the moon, Senku, Kohaku, and Stanley search the Taurus–Littrow valley for Why-man. During the mission, Why-man imitates Senku’s voice to trick Kohaku into opening the Medusa capsule. Can Stanley detect the deception? Have they misunderstood Why-Man? Why-man’s purpose is to grant intelligent life eternal existence through petrification. However, Why-man became disappointed when humans neither maintained the Medusas nor replaced their power sources. Senku’s radio transmissions convinced them that humanity had rejected petrification in favor of scientific progress, prompting Earth’s second petrification. Declaring that science still has limitless potential, Senku rejects Why-man’s philosophy and proposes a one-on-one negotiation to decide humanity’s future once and for all. Why-man insists the chance of success is 0%, but Senku argues it is merely close to zero—a possibility worth pursuing.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen Dai-San-Bu Ryoushu no Youjo) season 4

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again. Now she has become Rosemyne, the adopted daughter of a Duke.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Gathering of Gutenberg“

An attempt to defeat the great Feybeast my be lost due to lack of sleep. But never underestimate the High Priest. As keeper of the keys Rosemyne finds some incrimnating correspondence. To improve the printing press, the craftsman Ingo is even willing to exchange ideas between different trades. Rosemyne keeps making mistakes.

Set in 2033 Japan, the series follows a new generation of officers in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Special Vehicle Section 2 dealing with Labor crimes and accidents, even as Labors are becoming obsolete from the increase in AI-driven automation.

Tonight’s Episodes: “The Trend Is #Division2” and “Delusions In Leisure” and “Nothing Beats The Real Thing“

Towa and Division 2 are performing an educational outreach campaign at a preschool when they get an emergency call: a Labor rented for a Christmas event at a local mall has been hijacked and is wreaking havoc. Towa and Akihiko manage to subdue the Labor while Yuta arrests the pilot, but a virus inside the Labor starts it acting autonomously.
Section 2 is enjoying an extended period of time without deployment, and Captain Saeki is away. Some of the team are finding ways to make use of it; others, like Towa, are bored out of their minds. Towa begins writing a fake incident in the logbook in which the team are deployed to handle a powerful terrorist Labor. The incident snowballs.
Division 2 are called in to provide security for filming on “The Return of the Mountain God”, a reboot of a tokusatsu period drama; the director Tokudaji insists on doing things without special effects, so the production uses real Labors. Isao Ota, from the original Division 2, is called in to drive the ‘enemy’ Labor, a crab-like monster.

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”) season 4 part B

Natsuki Subaru, an ordinary high school student, is on his way home from the convenience store when he finds himself transported to another world. As he’s lost and confused in a new world where he doesn’t even know left from right, the only person to reach out to him was a beautiful girl with silver hair. Determined to repay her somehow for saving him from his own despair, Subaru agrees to help.

Tonight’s Episode: “Stand Up”

En route to the library, Subaru gives the still insecure Julius a pep talk. Upon arriving, the group quickly finds Reid’s Book and Subaru volunteers to read it. However, rather than experiencing his memories, he ends up in Od Lagna—the “world’s cradle” where souls are “filtered” upon death—where he encounters Louis Arneb. Meanwhile, the tower is suddenly attacked by mabeasts led by Lye Batenkaitos, prompting the others into action.

Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004 (Yuusha-kei ni Shosu: Choubatsu Yuusha 9004-tai Keimu Kiroku)

In a world where heroism is a punishment, Xylo Forbartz, a condemned goddess killer, battles endless hordes of monstrous abominations as part of Penal Hero Unit 9004. Death is no escape, only a cycle of resurrection and relentless combat. But when Xylo encounters a mysterious new goddess, their unlikely alliance sparks a rebellion that could shatter the chains of eternal punishment.

Tonight’s Episode: “Standby Order: Mureed Fortress“

The heroes arrive at Mureed Fortress during the Great Exchange festival for their next mission. While Teoritta and the others enjoy the festival, Xylo initially confines himself to the heroes’ dungeon quarters until Kivia approaches him. The heroes learn that their assignment is a suicide mission to defend the fortress and lure the local Demon Lord, Iblis, so that the holy knights can kill it; any attempt to flee will result in execution. As he negotiates for better terms, Venetim recalls the trial where he was sentenced to be a hero.

Golden Kamuy OAV 5

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Lightning Thief and the Viper O-Gin” and “Long-Tailed Tit“

Filling in the details between 2 scenes in Season 1 Episode 12, Hijikata Toshiz?, Nagakura Shinpachi and Ogata Hyakunosuke deal with 2 gangs (and each other) in the town of Barato as they both try to chase down another of the tattooed skins, on the Lightening Thief accompanied by his murderous girlfriend O-Gin the Viper. There is also a second side story about bird-catching, Ainu-style, while lost in the snowy wilderness.
