This week JAFWA will be operating on Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.
As we start the new month at JAFWA, a month named after the first Roman Emperor, we are reminded that just as the ancient Romans had a scorched earth tactic, this month commemorates the anniversaries of the only times that nuclear weapons were used in war against the enemy. As we remember this terrible event, let us work towards it never happening again.
But on a more hopeful note, do you know where your Patlabor is? Yes, the upcoming August 10th has actually been designated as the Patlabor Day for several years, to commemorate the eponymous anime from 1988. We must find a way somehow to celebrate this August.
This week’s JAFWA program is starting to get a bit of a shakeup as several title in our current regular program come to an end. This week “Re: Zero” comes to a hiatus as part A of the season ends, but be aware there is a part B ready to go. And “Clevatess” will finish its first season (though there is a 2nd season). The survey at the end of this month will be so important for deciding the new September program.
This week we will show not one but two preview episodes from different programs. Though one of these preview items for this time will be an episode that is a double-length first episode, all to make it easier if it happens to be voted into the program for September.
Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)
The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.
This evening’s Episode: “Glittering Stars of the Ball“
Claude escorts Athanasia to the ball. She worries about what might happen but is able to explain her fear as nervousness of dancing with an audience. Alpheus has secretly brought Jennette as a guest, promising to introduce her to her real father and sister she has never met. After the first dance Athanasia is able to socialise with other girls her own age but notices Jennette is absent. Ijikiel appears and asks her to dance.
Dr Stone season 4 “Science Future” final cour
Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. After the battle on Treasure Island, Senku and the gang return to the Kingdom of Science. With their sights set on the Moon, they must first voyage to the Americas in hopes of beginning to harvest the required materials. Through teamwork and science, they continue the fight to save humanity once and for all. This will involve creating a space program to go to the Moon.
This Evening’s Episode: “Wanting Everything“
Senku is making under sea cables to connect the cities. With conference-calling now possible, the modern engineers can have complicated conversations and share their rocket designs in real time. Xeno reveals that there will only be space for three astronauts, a pilot, a scientist, and a warrior. Who are the choices?
Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen Dai-San-Bu Ryuushu no Youjo) season 4
The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again. Now she has become Rosemyne, the adopted daughter of a Duke.

Ferdinand gives Rosemyne the task to entrap and isolate the mayor of Hasse, and find the noble behind the troubles at the monastery and its orphaned children. What is the meaning of wrong-doing in this world? Is Rosemyne too weak?

Witch Hat Atelier (Tongari Boushi no Atorie)
In a world where only witches can cast magic, they must avoid being seen by ordinary people while casting. While Coco does her chores, she daydreams of becoming a witch. When a young witch named Qifrey visits her village, Coco uncovers the “absolute secret,” becomes Qifrey’s apprentice, and begins her studies. This is the story of children who encounter despair, yet reach out toward hope.
Tonight’s Episode: “A Promise in Silver“
Qifrey tells Tartah to hold off his questions as they learn of Coco’s fever. Tartah remains wary of Qifrey and returns home. Qifrey assists the locals in extinguishing a fire at a tavern, while Tartah heads back to the hospital after forgetting his pointed cap. Tartah sees Coco’s worsening fever, so he tries to help by administering a medicine. However, Tartah grows frustrated by his inability to distinguish the medicines. An ailing Coco teaches him a spell that breaks down the medicine into its basic ingredients.

Jinta, a bodyguard to a priestess in a remote mountain village, lives during Japan’s Edo period. While Jinta is an outsider to the town, he is still tasked with seeking out a demon in the forest on a quest to vanquish it. But upon meeting the demon, it instead tells Jinta of a puzzling and mysterious future.
Tonight’s Episode: “Demons and Humans“
As children in the 19th century, Jinta and his abused sister Suzune with the bad eye flee their abusive home. Rescued and adopted by a kind sentinel of a village of blacksmiths, Jinta grows up to become the bodyguard of the lovely Shirayuki who becomes the priestess Itsukihime. Though the issues with his fellow sentinel Kiyomasu pail into insignificance against the actions of the ageless Suzune.
Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”) season 4
Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.
Tonight’s Episode: “Re:Zero ? Starting Life in Another World” (Hiatus)
Subaru reveals he has amnesia after getting restrained by Emilia when he attacked Ram. However, while Emilia believes him, Ram does not, leading the girls to fight. Getting knocked out in the crossfire, Subaru wakes up alone later to find the tower under attack by mabeasts. Satella then appears and begins to devour Subaru with her miasma. Can he believe Emilia?
Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na to Yuusha Paati o Tsuihou Sareta no de, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai which literally translates as ‘Banished from the Hero’s Party Because They Said ‘Don’t Think Somebody Like You Can Defeat the Demon Lord’, I Want to Live Freely in the Capital‘)
Flum Apricot is born with a unique Affinity known as “Reversal” that leaves her with zero stats across the board. However, after being prophesied by the God Origin to join the Hero’s party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum finds herself with what seems like an impossible task. Things only get harder when the party’s renowned sage, Jean Inteige, decides to sell her into slavery instead. Flum finally learns the true meaning of her unique “Reversal” Affinity.
Tonight’s Episode: “Dein and Flum“
Ink’s face suddenly returns to normal, but she doesn’t remember what happened. Flum suspects this to be the Church’s doing and accuses Ink of being a threat, but Ink denies it. Fleeing, Ink is captured by Dein who plans to take her back to the Church and reveals that he also captured Milkit and her friends.
Clevatess (Clevatess -Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha-) season 1
After killing a group of heroes and destroying an entire kingdom as revenge for attacking his lands, one of the Four Beast Kings, Clevatess, takes in a baby belonging to the kingdom’s royal family. He then resurrects one of the heroes, Alicia Glenfall, whom he enslaves so she can help him take care of the baby while hoping to examine humanity more closely.
Tonight’s Episode: “Return of the King” (finale)
Alicia reprimands Klen for choosing to leave and tells him to look at Luna’s eyes as the baby makes his way to Klen, to which he sees a light-purple aura inside his eyes, making him reconsider. Nelluru saves Alicia with her strength, but Alicia fails to defeat Dorel. However, she manages to break his sword. Sp many details to figure out.
