This week JAFWA will be operating on Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.

A reminder that the JAFWA Annual General Meeting will be held before the screening of Saturday July 18^th, the week after this screening! Come along to learn how your beloved JAFWA committee is performing in your name, vote on contentious issues such as keeping Winter Hours all year long, or even raise your own wise motion for the JAFWA membership to vote on (eg remove a program item, ensure another item gets added, demand a sushi delivery service, call for world domination, enforce a dress code, etc). You could even nominate yourself for the JAFWA committee election.

This the last week we are officially open to nominations to get yourself onto the committee elections. The election shall take place on July 18^th, during the Dinner Break of the screening session after the AGM.

In this week’s JAFWA program we have the regular program now locked in until at least August. Unless a motion is made and voted for at the AGM (this is a plug to engage with the AGM).
In this week’s preview item it will be something from the new cour of anime just beginning to be shown in this Japanese Summer. We have our eyes on a dramatisation of historical culture, which should be available by the time of this screening.

Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like Lindsay, Elliot and Dale did previously, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally have done, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)

The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.

This evening’s Episode: “A Girl a Lot Like Me“

Athanasia convinces Lucas to send her to Ijikiel, since she didn’t say goodbye last time. Ijikiel is thrilled to see her again. Athanasia is upset he will be leaving to Arlanta Kingdom as her visions say he is supposed to stay and fall in love with Jennette. Athanasia remembers that Jennette’s mother rejected Claude for being illegitimate. When Claude took the Imperial throne she tried to get him back but was rejected and married a minor royal instead before dying giving birth to Jennette. Examining the threads of her fate, Lucas is fascinated to see what kind of future Athanasia will bring about.

Dr Stone season 4 “Science Future” final cour

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. After the battle on Treasure Island, Senku and the gang return to the Kingdom of Science. With their sights set on the Moon, they must first voyage to the Americas in hopes of beginning to harvest the required materials. Through teamwork and science, they continue the fight to save humanity once and for all. This will involve creating a space program to go to the Moon.

This Evening’s Episode: “Stone to Space“

Chrome and Suika beg Sai to teach them math in order to build their two-way rocket before Senku finishes the one-way rocket. Senku reveals that making aluminum requires massive amounts of electricity, which will only be possible with a hydro-electric dam. Everyone is happy to learn that the ideal location will be in Ishigami Village. Will Chrome confess to Ruri?

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen Dai-San-Bu Ryuushu no Youjo) season 4

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again. Now she has become Rosemyne, the adopted daughter of a Duke.

This evening’s Episode: “Harspiel Concert“

Rosemyne steadily continues preparing for the charity concert, with plotting and printing and skirting the rules. And there is works on Rozemyne’s highbeast, though she has a different visualisation of the process. Will the fan-girls be satisfied, or are the knights needed?

He spends his days in a kind of quiet gloom, wondering why people dance. Then, one day, he witnesses a dance that he feels to be “good”—and everything begins to change. This is the story of the beautiful young boy who would one day shape the art of Noh and be remembered as Zeami.

Tonight’s Episode: “Why Do People Dance?“

In 1374, amidst an ongoing civil war, Oniyasha wonders on the appeal and significance of dance to humans while participating in a performance led by his father Kan’ami. Oniyasha jeopardizes the performance, frustrating Kan’ami in his mission to preserve Sarugaku with their troupe. While returning home, he encounters a mysterious white-haired man, who points him to a shirabyoshi emotionally dancing. Oniyasha is left stunned and entranced by her abstract free-flowing performance, inspiring him to emulate the shirabyoshi‘s skills.

Witch Hat Atelier (Tongari Boushi no Atorie)

In a world where only witches can cast magic, they must avoid being seen by ordinary people while casting. While Coco does her chores, she daydreams of becoming a witch. When a young witch named Qifrey visits her village, Coco uncovers the “absolute secret,” becomes Qifrey’s apprentice, and begins her studies. This is the story of children who encounter despair, yet reach out toward hope.

Tonight’s Episode: “Who Is Magic For?“

Despite Qifrey’s concerns for Agott’s readiness to conduct fieldwork, Olruggio takes her to the Staircase River. Olruggio relegates Agott to menial tasks upon seeing her impatience, irritating Agott. After arriving with the apprentices, Qifrey helps Olruggio rescue the caravan. But a collapsing river bank will bring Coco to the attention of the Knights Moralis.

Kusunoki’s Garden of Gods (Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei)

Minato Kusunoki ends up becoming the caretaker of a newly constructed house deep in the countryside. A procession of unique and peculiar gods is drawn to the comfort of the purified Kusunoki residence, and Minato spends his days relaxing in the company of his spiritual neighbours. What else lies in store for Minato as he lives peacefully surrounded by gods.

Tonight’s Episode: “Uninvited Guests While Walking Around Town“

Minato worries Yamagami is still a puppy and seems depressed. Yamagami visits Musashi Publishing, who writes his favourite magazine. They visit Mimasaka Diner, popular with other humans that are friends with Gods and spirits. Meanwhile the scam exorcist Ansho and his partner Enno break into the house looking for more keychains.

Champignon Witch (Champignon no Majo)

Luna is a young witch who lives alone in a forest known for its poisonous mushrooms. Feared and shunned by nearby villagers for being a black witch in a kingdom ruled by white witches, Luna is believed to bring illness and death because of the poisonous mushrooms that she leaves everywhere she touches.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Magic Diary“

Lize is running, but stops to help a mouse who ate a poisonous mushroom. Claude and Luna catch up to him, and Luna saves him from being overwhelmed by poison. Whenever Luna absorbs poisonous mushrooms from Lize, he loses memories and growth from his magical training. To prevent this, Luna teaches Lize how to extract these negative feelings by writing them in a diary.

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”) season 4

Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Tonight’s Episode: “Who Are You?“

Deducing from Emilia and Beatrice’s reactions that he has amnesia, Subaru is nevertheless excited about being in another world. However, upon being reintroduced to his comrades, Julius and Ram are respectively devastated that he and Rem have now been forgotten by everyone. Learning he had collapsed in the library, Subaru heads there to hopefully find the cause of his amnesia.

Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na to Yuusha Paati o Tsuihou Sareta no de, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai which literally translates as ‘Banished from the Hero’s Party Because They Said ‘Don’t Think Somebody Like You Can Defeat the Demon Lord’, I Want to Live Freely in the Capital‘)

Flum Apricot is born with a unique Affinity known as “Reversal” that leaves her with zero stats across the board. However, after being prophesied by the God Origin to join the Hero’s party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum finds herself with what seems like an impossible task. Things only get harder when the party’s renowned sage, Jean Inteige, decides to sell her into slavery instead. Flum finally learns the true meaning of her unique “Reversal” Affinity.

Tonight’s Episode: “Budding and Withering“

The blind girl introduces herself as Ink Wreathcraft and claims that she has no family nor does she remember her background. Still suspicious of where she came from, Flum asks Sara, Ed, and Jonny to investigate, but they turn up with nothing. Flum also asks the guild receptionist, but she too knows nothing about Ink. Flum also learns that Dein has been forced out of power.

Clevatess (Clevatess -Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha-)

After killing a group of heroes and destroying an entire kingdom as revenge for attacking his lands, one of the Four Beast Kings, Clevatess, takes in a baby belonging to the kingdom’s royal family. He then resurrects one of the heroes, Alicia Glenfall, whom he enslaves so she can help him take care of the baby while hoping to examine humanity more closely.

Tonight’s Episode: “War Zone Hiderat“

In the ruins of Haiden, Princess T’ala helps survivors get to safety while searching for her missing son. Imformed of General Dorel’s approach and Clevatess’s apparent imprisonment. T’ala becomes determined to stop him and prepares for battle as Dorel breaches Haiden. Meanwhile, wizard Naie is captured by Phil and Pito, and Alicia and Klen force her to tell them about Dorel’s motives.
