Until September JAFWA will be operating on Winter Hours – ie screening starts at ~4:15PM.

Sunday June 21^st was the Winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year for Perth. Now we head into a Season of ever growing sunlight (and hopefully warmth). It is now officially Summer in Japan, and a new cour of anime begins. It is the last screening in the month of June for JAFWA.
And you know what the end of the month means – it is time both for our monthly surveys where you rate both our current program and recent preview items during the Dinner Break, and have our monthly Member’s Prize at the end of the Dinner Break.

We are officially open to nominations to get yourself onto the committee elections. The election shall take place on July 18^th, during the Dinner Break of the screening session after the AGM.

In this week’s JAFWA program we have the regular regular program now locked in until at least August. Unless a motion is made and voted for at the AGM (this is a plug to engage with the AGM).
In this week’s preview item, which is not intended to be a comment on the weather, we witness the aftermath of when a young fellow and his faithful giant robot fail to save Earth against an invasion of space kaijuu. The first few volumes of this shounen manga are in the JAFWA library.

As a Public Service Announcement from JAFWA we regretfully inform people with the news that the long-time fixture of Perth fandom – Tokyo Underground is being forced to close for the final time. Though Bronwyn has taken her store through many misfortunes and relocations, she has indicated that she will not be maintaining her stall at the Wanneroo Weekend Markets much longer due to health reasons. Before the EoFY, after which it is too late, visit Tokyo Underground one last time, and help her empty the shop.

Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)

The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.

This evening’s Episode: “Angel“

Lucas explains no two people’s magic is alike, so no matter what he teaches her she must find what works for herself. Tired of him being unhelpful Athanasia wishes she had let Alpheus’ son Ijikiel teach her instead. Irritated, Lucas teleports her to Alpheus’ house on top of Ijikiel, who is so dazed by the impact he mistakes Athanasia for an angel.

Dr Stone season 4 “Science Future” final cour

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilisation with his Kingdom of Science. After the battle on Treasure Island, Senku and the gang return to the Kingdom of Science. With their sights set on the Moon, they must first voyage to the Americas in hopes of beginning to harvest the required materials. Through teamwork and science, they continue the fight to save humanity once and for all. This will involve creating a space program to go to the Moon.

This Evening’s Episode: “The Truth About the Rocket“

Senku reinvents magnetic-core memory to allow the computer to store information, and Nixie tubes for display. With the computer finished, Senku returns to rockect but as this calls for aluminum, the Perseus sails Australia to mine for bauxite. But Senku’s rocket will have a flaw that Chrome and Suika are determined to fix.

Yukio was destroyed in battle and Tetsuo survived in an escape pod. After eight years in cold sleep, the escape pod finally lands back on Earth. But when Tetsuo emerges he finds a world in ruins, entirely frozen beneath a blanket of ice and snow—snowball Earth.

This evening’s Episode: “The Savior Who Could Not Bring Salvation“

In 2025, humanity is confronted by hostile kaiju from outer space, forcing the former to unite and develop new weapon technologies. One such form is a giant robot piloted by its creator’s som. Over the course of ten years, Tetsuo becomes renowned as “the Savior”, having killed many kaiju with the robot, referred to as “Yukio”. However, as a result of spending his entire childhood fighting kaiju, Tetsuo has poor social skills. Taking the battle to space, Tetsuo is shocked at what happens to the Earth.

Ascendance of a Bookworm: Adopted Daughter of an Archduke (Honzuki no Gekokujo: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiramasen Dai-San-Bu Ryoushu no Youjo) season 4

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again. Now she has become Rosemyne, the adopted daughter of a Duke.

Tonight’s Episode: “Concert Preparations“

Obtaining sufficient donation funds now depends on a concert. First a contest to create wax paper. And never forget to keep the High Priest’s approval, for he is the draw-card. Certain artistic licences may be taken. Certain personal relationships will be cultivated.

Witch Hat Atelier (Tongari Boushi no Atorie)

In a world where only witches can cast magic, they must avoid being seen by ordinary people while casting. While Coco does her chores, she daydreams of becoming a witch. When a young witch named Qifrey visits her village, Coco uncovers the “absolute secret,” becomes Qifrey’s apprentice, and begins her studies. This is the story of children who encounter despair, yet reach out toward hope.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Light on a Rainy Day“

Coco is dismayed with her insufficient contributions at Kalhn and aims to improve. Coco meets the atelier’s superviser Olruggio. Olruggio hears of Coco’s run-in with forbidden magic and plans to turn her in to the Great Hall and the Knights Morales. Coco learns that Olruggio invents contraptions, including the spell that made her fall in love with magic.

Kusunoki’s Garden of Gods (Kami no Niwatsuki Kusunoki-tei)

Minato Kusunoki ends up becoming the caretaker of a newly constructed house deep in the countryside. A procession of unique and peculiar gods is drawn to the comfort of the purified Kusunoki residence, and Minato spends his days relaxing in the company of his spiritual neighbors. What else lies in store for Minato as he lives peacefully surrounded by gods.

Tonight’s Episode: “Ancient Connection with the Neighbouring Mountain“

Yamagami alters the garden to include a waterfall, but shrinks to a puppy again. Koi appear in the stream, servants of the God of the neighbouring mountain, whom Yamagami is not on good terms with. This foxy goddess may trespass on the Garden’s inhabitants. Scam-artist exorcist Ansho discovers one of Minato’s gifts.

Champignon Witch (Champignon no Majo)

Luna is a young witch who lives alone in a forest known for its poisonous mushrooms. Feared and shunned by nearby villagers for being a black witch in a kingdom ruled by white witches, Luna is believed to bring illness and death because of the poisonous mushrooms that she leaves everywhere she touches.

Tonight’s Episode: “The First Day“

Lize is using magic to write his feelings in a diary, which helps prevent any negative emotions from building up inside of him. He has improved using magic, but is still clumsy, which worries and irritates Luna. In a flashback, Lizel wakes up from the events of the previous episode, and emits a great power when his true name is spoken. What happens when Lize learns of his probable fate?

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”) season 4

Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Tonight’s Episode: “Walking Out of the Convenience Store and Into a Wondrous World“

After getting Julius’ injuries treated, Subaru checks up on his companions and agrees to keep watch as they sleep. Later he finds Foxidna is gone and eventually finds her atop a balcony by following one of the birds nesting at the tower. Now in private, the two openly voice their distrust for each other, with Subaru wary of her being a copy of Echidna while Foxidna is suspicious of his unknown origins. Julius then finds them and, having overheard them discussing Anastasia’s condition, demands an explanation.

Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na to Yuusha Paati o Tsuihou Sareta no de, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai which literally translates as ‘Banished from the Hero’s Party Because They Said ‘Don’t Think Somebody Like You Can Defeat the Demon Lord’, I Want to Live Freely in the Capital‘)

Flum Apricot is born with a unique Affinity known as “Reversal” that leaves her with zero stats across the board. However, after being prophesied by the God Origin to join the Hero’s party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum finds herself with what seems like an impossible task. Things only get harder when the party’s renowned sage, Jean Inteige, decides to sell her into slavery instead. Flum finally learns the true meaning of her unique “Reversal” Affinity.

Tonight’s Episode: “Meetings and Partings“

Flum flees with the knights and Dein’s men after her. Dein eventually corners Flum, taking a blind girl hostage to force her to drink poison in exchange for the girl’s freedom. However, this fails to kill Flum thanks to her Reversal ability. The rogue knights arrive to help Dein, but a girl named Ottilie Fohkelpi appears and defeats them along with most of Dein’s men. As Dein escapes, Ottilie has her men arrest the survivors.

Clevatess (Clevatess -Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha-)

After killing a group of heroes and destroying an entire kingdom as revenge for attacking his lands, one of the Four Beast Kings, Clevatess, takes in a baby belonging to the kingdom’s royal family. He then resurrects one of the heroes, Alicia Glenfall, whom he enslaves so she can help him take care of the baby while hoping to examine humanity more closely.

Tonight’s Episode: “Current of Insects“

Alicia’s group is cornered in a watermill. Phil and Pito’s parents stop their sons from burning down the mill before Mark, their father, gets Alicia to come out. Upon learning that she fought Clevatess, Mark forewarns her of the dangers that would happen in the dark lands. Alicia fights off Maynard’s insects before being infected by their venom.
