For those of you who celebrate, a heartfelt May the 4^th be with you. and for the hard-core “Revenge of the Fifth” and “Return of the Sixth”.
In Japan they have four national holidays in rapid succession, from Wed, 29 Apr 2026 to Wed, 6 May 2026, leading the week to be known as Golden Week. So many congratulations to the people in Japan.

We welcome you to the merry month of May!
The regular JAFWA program from the beginning of the year has come to an end, apart from a couple of episodes. The last episode of “Oshi no Ko” season 3 will be screened this week, the other two next week.
So this month we will be starting a whole new slew of regular series, Five of these regular series will be starting this coming week, and your beloved JAFWA committee has only decided about 3 of them so far, the rest to be decided just before the JAFWA screening. So this week’s synopses may be a little sparse. Because the first episode of “Clevatess” was only screened two JAFWA sessions previously, we will go with episode #2 this week.

As a Public Service Announcement from JAFWA we regretfully inform people with the news that the long-time fixture of Perth fandom – Tokyo Underground is being forced to close for the final time. Though Bronwyn has taken her store through many misfortunes and relocations, she has indicated that she will not be maintaining her stall at the Wanneroo Weekend Markets much longer due to health reasons. Before it is too late visit Tokyo Underground one last time, and help her empty the shop.

Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? It sometimes seems that all the popular Japanese anime movies are coming.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

Tokyo Alley’s 10th anniversary!

On the weekend of 9-10 May 2026 Tokyo Alley will be having their 10^th Convention at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Center. Head on down before coming to JAFWA to see the stallholders and artists.

This year SwanCon celebrates its 50^th anniversary!

JAFWA and SwanCon go back quite far. Many early SwanCon attendees received their first dose of ‘proper’ anime through the late night screening rooms (nothing too dodgy, just pleasantly weird). When JAFWA became an incorporated body in late 1996/early 1997, the governing body of SwanCon (The Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation, or WASFF) allowed us to use their Constitutional Documents as a basis for our own.

In 1999, and again in 2006 JAFWA worked with SwanCon to raise funds and sponsor a Special Guest – Mangaka, Cosplayer, Musician and Toei Animation star Ippongi Bang. Without SwanCon’s support JAFWA would not have achieved something so special.

This year SwanCon is on from 29 May through the long weekend to 1 June, at The Pagoda Resort in Como. For those wanting to visit on the Saturday before the screening, JAFWA is a short distance away in South Perth.

Who Made me a Princess? (In Japanese: Aru Hi, Ohime-sama ni Natteshimatta Ken ni Tsuite, in Korean: Eoneu Nal Gongjuga Doeeobeolyeossda, in Chinese: Mófaa Goungzhuu de Xiao Fánnao)

The story follows Athanasia de Alger Obelia, a young princess executed by her father, Claude de Alger Obelia, the cold-blooded emperor of the Obelian Empire. However, Athanasia is reincarnated as her baby-self and given a second chance at the same life. Athanasia must use all of her wit and cunning to survive in the palace and to prevent her own death.

This evening’s Episode: “Fate Begins to Stir“

Empress Consort Diana dies giving birth to Emperor Claude Obelia’s daughter Athanasia. Having never loved Diana Claude completely ignores Athanasia. At a few days old Athanasia gains adult intelligence and has a vision of her future where she is accused of plotting Claude’s assassination, leading to her imprisonment and suicide. Diana’s friend Lilian decides to raise Athanasia herself. Three years later Athanasia is beloved by her servants who find her adorable, except for a greedy maid who searches Athanasia’s home hoping to steal treasure.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren) season 2

For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye. On the road to Ende, Frieren confronts past bonds and rising threats with her newfound party.

This Evening’s Episode: “Himmel’s Memoirs“

On a carriage, Denken reads a letter and then continues his journey to visit his wife’s grave on foot. Frieren’s party arrives in a town in the region of Drachen, which was damaged by a dragon. An elderly man requests that the party slay a swarm of dragons that have made a nest nearby. While apprehensive at first, Frieren accepts the quest in exchange for a grimoire as payment. Fern asks Frieren why she always asks for payment.

In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.

This evening’s Episode: “Battle to the Death in the Sewers“

Loid escapes from the SSS to the sewers using booby traps he set up at the park earlier and disguising himself as Yuri. Unfortunately, Loid encounters Yuri himself after the latter figures out that Twilight escaped to the sewers, leading to a fight between the two. Loid knocks Yuri unconscious but doesn’t kill him after Yuri mentions Yor’s name. Meanwhile Fiona and the rest of the team have to catch Wheeler.

Winter was once the only season in the world-but such an existence was too lonely to bear, and so it created Spring to love. Before long, the earth wished for more time to rest in the cycle, and Summer and Autumn were born. The ones who carry the cycle are called the Agents of the Four Seasons.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Dance of Spring“

Hinagiku, the Agent of Spring, disappeared from this land ten years ago, taking the season of spring with her. Now, after incredible hardship, she has returned to restore the cycle to its proper state-and, as in the myth passed down since the dawn of time, she sends her love to Winter. But first they encounter Nazuna, an elementary school girl who wishes to shovel the snow.

Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 3

Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry. But to also track down the truth behind Ai and Goro’s deaths, Ruby keeps rising in the entertainment world.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Beginning” finale

Aqua also meets Marina, where he learns that she has given birth to two kids after Sarina’s passing. Ruby becomes increasingly burdened by the film as she recalls her strained relationship with Marina and questions who she is. The white-haired girl then narrates Sarina’s past, revealing that Marina abandoned her following the discovery of Sarina’s terminal illness at age four. Upon seeing Marina’s new family, Ruby tearfully remarks that she brings misery to the people she loves. Aqua realises Ruby is the reincarnated Sarina, so he reveals himself as Dr Gorou and asks Ruby to live her own life.

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”) season 4

Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Reason I’m Taking You With Me / Gorgeous Tiger Reloaded“

Following the Battle of Priestella, Julius’ name was consumed by Roy Alphard, leaving him forgotten by everyone besides Subaru. To cure Julius, along with the Gluttony trio and Capella Emerada’s other victims, Anastasia proposes seeking out the legendary Sage, Shaula. Along the way, Subaru also deduces that an artificial spirit Anastasia is contracted with is possessing her—a copy of Echidna in the form of a fox, whom Subaru nicknames “Foxidna”. Meanwhile, back in Priestella, Garfiel and Mimi visit the former’s mother and bond with her new children, Fred and Rafiel, before parting ways.

Roll Over and Die: I Will Fight for an Ordinary Life with My Love and Cursed Sword! (Omae Gotoki ga Maou ni Kateru to Omou na to Yuusha Paati o Tsuihou Sareta no de, Outo de Kimama ni Kurashitai which literally translates as ‘Banished from the Hero’s Party Because They Said ‘Don’t Think Somebody Like You Can Defeat the Demon Lord’, I Want to Live Freely in the Capital‘)

Flum Apricot is born with a unique Affinity known as “Reversal” that leaves her with zero stats across the board. However, after being prophesied by the God Origin to join the Hero’s party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum finds herself with what seems like an impossible task. Things only get harder when the party’s renowned sage, Jean Inteige, decides to sell her into slavery instead. Flum finally learns the true meaning of her unique “Reversal” Affinity.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Beginning and the End“

Though chosen by humanity’s deity, Origin, to join the Hero’s party and defeat the Demon Lord, Flum has zero stats due to her Affinity—Reversal. Considering her a nuisance, the party’s Sage, Jean, sells her into slavery behind the other members’ backs. Even worse, the slave trader decides to feed her and the other slaves to ghouls after deeming her a defective product. He at least gives them a sword to defend themselves, but it is cursed to kill anyone with low stats. Cursed sword, meet Flum Apricot’s unique Affinity.

Clevatess (Clevatess -Majuu no Ou to Akago to Shikabane no Yuusha-)

After killing a group of heroes and destroying an entire kingdom as revenge for attacking his lands, one of the Four Beast Kings, Clevatess, takes in a baby belonging to the kingdom’s royal family. He then resurrects one of the heroes, Alicia Glenfall, whom he enslaves so she can help him take care of the baby while hoping to examine humanity more closely.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Beast Lord in Captivity“

Klen reveals that he is weaker in human form and intends to stay this way until Luna becomes king. In turn, Alicia reveals that they are captured by a group of slave traders called the Crows. Arriving at their hideout, Alicia is brought to see the boss while Klen is made to work in the kitchen where he meets Nell, a slave girl, and the kitchen’s owner, Carme. Upon meeting Broco, the leader, and his pet troll Betty, he demands that Alicia takes them to where her allies’ weapons are, but she refuses.
