As we March into April at JAFWA and we face Autumn with the news that a fixture of Perth fandom is having to retire for health reasons. Bronwyn has struggled to keep alive Tokyo Underground through many misfortunes, but has indicated that she will not be maintaining her stall at the Wanneroo Weekend Markets much longer. Before it is too late visit Tokyo Underground one last time, and help her empty the shop.
But dream on of Summer for a little while longer, as it is still a month before JAFWA switches to Winter Hours.
Our planned weekly preview item in the JAFWA program is currently under question. It hasn’t yet screened in Japan yet, but there is a suggestion that it will be a double-length episode which means it won’t fit in the JAFWA program this month, as we are trying to get everything ready for new series to start screening in May. We are really hoping to draw in the gentle witchcraft series preview item, but as of publication time we aren’t certain we will have it, so we may need to find an alternative show.
Anime is definitely going mainstream. Last year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and then the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. This year there has been the “Zombieland Saga” movie, and a “Gundam” movie, and an unbelievably good “Scarlet”. Life is wonderful for anime fans.
What else will be showing up in cinemas? The return of “Demon Slayer”! And the scary concept “Umamusume Pretty Derby”.
Not to mention that Luna Leederville is putting anime films in their Monday Double Feature program and Thursday Tokyo Nights.

This year SwanCon celebrates its 50th anniversary!
JAFWA and SwanCon go back quite far. Many early SwanCon attendees received their first dose of ‘proper’ anime through the late night screening rooms (nothing too dodgy, just pleasantly weird). When JAFWA became an incorporated body in late 1996/early 1997, the governing body of SwanCon (The Western Australian Science Fiction Foundation, or WASFF) allowed us to use their Constitutional Documents as a basis for our own.
In 1999, and again in 2006 JAFWA worked with SwanCon to raise funds and sponsor a Special Guest – Mangaka, Cosplayer, Musician and Toei Animation star Ippongi Bang. Without SwanCon’s support JAFWA would not have achieved something so special.
This year SwanCon is on from 29 May through the long weekend to 1 June, at The Pagoda Resort in Como. For those wanting to visit on the Saturday before the screening, JAFWA is a short distance away in South Perth.

Alma-chan Wants to Have a Family (Alma-chan wa Kazoku ni Naritai)
Alma is a super high-performance girl-type robot weapon created by two genius scientists, Enji Kamisato and Suzume Yobane. However, because the pair created her, Alma thinks that the two are actually her parents, and uses all in her considerable power to make them the perfect family.

Suzume’s work with electrical equipment has caused to develop enough of static charge to harm Alma. Some confusion and misunderstandings involved in developing a safe discharge. Then Alma’s antics are filmed and go viral. What to do? How to take advantage?
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (Sousou no Furiiren) season 2
For ten years, elf mage Frieren traveled with Himmel the hero, Heiter the priest, and Eisen the dwarf warrior as they quested to destroy the demon king. At the end of their journey, Frieren set out on her own, not quite understanding how differently time flows for her versus her human companions. Reunited after fifty years only to see them wither and die, Frieren begins to ponder the nature of connections at a time when it’s already too late to say goodbye. On the road to Ende, Frieren confronts past bonds and rising threats with her newfound party.
This Evening’s Episode: “A Demon-Slaying Request“
A village is slaughtered by demons with Methode and Genau arriving at the ruins of the village after receiving a demon-slaying request from the great mage Serie. They clean up the straggler demons and look for clues about who attacked the village. They realise they are surrounded and prepare to fight, only to find Frieren and party answering the same demon-slaying request.
Spy x Family season 3
In order to ensure World Peace, a master spy who has to “build a family” to execute a mission, not realising that the girl he adopts as his daughter is a telepath, and the woman he agrees to be in a marriage with is a skilled assassin.
This evening’s Episode: “Anya’s Era Has Come“
As the rescued Eden students get picked up by their parents, Damian apologizes to Anya for mistreating her in the past after seeing her bravery. At the same time, Anya praises his bravery as well. Yor and Melinda arrive after hearing what happened. Anya is also disturbed after reading Melinda’s mind. But but Anya is awarded a Stella for actions, and gets more popular than Damian is comfortable with.

May I Ask for One Final Thing? (Saigo ni Hitotsu dake Onegai Shitemo Yoroshii Deshou ka)
In the middle of a ball, Scarlet’s fiancé, Prince Kyle, suddenly calls off their engagement. She’s falsely accused of being a bully, and people unfairly call her a “Villainess.” At her wit’s end, she asks for one last favor: to give him a good fist in the face. So begins Scarlet’s story of revenge against Kyle and his corrupt cronies.
Tonight’s Episode: “May I Cook This Thick Cut of Pork Through With Body Punches?“
As Snowind prepares to evacuate, a hypnotized Nanaka tries to trick Scarlet by pretending to be Julius, but she doesn’t fall for it and undoes Terenezza’s hypnosis. Nanaka tells Scarlet about what he learned. During a meeting, with Alflame joining in, Julius explains that Alflame had offered an alliance between Pallistan and himself while Jinn explains that inheriting the crown in Vankish Empire rests on strength in battle, not royal bloodlines. Falconia’s army of elves and beastkin are sloppy and unmotivated, as though they don’t want to be there. Julius decides to negotiate with Falconia; hoping that if Falconia accepts peace, Eldrand will be forced to retreat. Scarlet deals with the invading orcs.
Mashle: Magic and Muscles (“Masshuru”) season 2
This is a world of magic where magic is used for everything. But deep in the forest exists a young man who spends his time training and bulking up. He can’t use magic, but he enjoys a peaceful life with his father. His muscular body will have to protect him from the magic users who are out to get him, now that his magic-lack is revealed.
Tonight’s Episode: “Mash Burnedead and the Origin of the Greatest Magic User“
Innocent steals Wahlberg’s spatial magic and even fights hand to hand with Mash. However, overusing Wahlbergs’s vast magical power starts to affect his body. Wahlberg realises Innocent is seeking an immortal body that can withstand multiple stolen powers without breaking down. Mash can only vaguely understand that Innocent wants to become the strongest human, increasing his desire to fight him.
Oshi no Ko (“My Favorite Idol” or “Their Idol’s Children”) season 3
Goro Amemiya works as an OB-GYN in a small rural town and is a huge fan of upcoming idol Ai Hoshino. After an unexpected meeting, Goro ends up dying suddenly only to be reborn as one of Ai’s children; a boy named Aquamarine Hoshino (or Aqua for short). He and his twin sister Ruby then grows up as one of show-biz’s biggest secrets.
As Aqua continues his quest to find his father—the puppet master behind his mother’s murder—within the Japanese entertainment industry. But to also track down the truth behind Ai and Goro’s deaths, Ruby keeps rising in the entertainment world.
Tonight’s Episode: “Plan“
An infuriated Ruby confronts Aqua on revealing their parentage, and Aqua reasons that the reveal boosts their recognition. Ruby, seeing through his lies, remarks that Aqua no longer cares about Ai and disowns him. Months later, Kana recognizes the story was Aqua’s way of protecting her, so she thanks him, then discloses her plans to retire as an idol and asks Aqua to continue supporting her. Aqua later urges Ichigo to help him in an intricate plan to make Hikaru suffer.
Jujutsu Kaisen: The Culling Game (Jujutsu Kaisen Shimetsu Kaiyuu Zenpen)
Negative human emotions – regret, bitterness, shame – are the source of all curses that infest the world and hide in everyday life, leading to death in the worst cases. Yuji Itadori, a particularly strong young man, attempts to save a friend from a curse, only to wind up consuming the special grade curse of Ryoumen Sukuna’s finger. Only a curse can eliminate another curse, and Yuji’s career as a cursed person who must exorcise curses has now begin. Now that curses are mainstream, the Culling Game begins, pushing Yuji and his allies to their limits.
Tonight’s Episode: “Tokyo Colony No. 1 – Part 4“
Megumi is attacked by Reggie, Remi, and two more of Reggie’s underlings, reluctantly saving Remi from an explosion caused by one of the underlings. After Kogane informs the players of Yuji and Higuruma’s new rule addition, Megumi kills Reggie’s second underling, after which he is cornered by Reggie and Hazenoki. Suddenly, Takaba appears, stating he will help Megumi to make it an even fight.
The Beginning After The End (Saikyou no Ousama, Futatabime no Jinsei wa Nani o Suru? lit. ‘What Will the Mighty King Do in His Second Life?’)
King Grey is a once-powerful ruler reborn as Arthur Leywin, a boy with untapped potential. He discovers that his new life is filled with danger and adventure at every turn. From mastering powerful spells to facing fierce enemies, Arthur must use his skills and wits to protect those he cares about and uncover the secrets of his mysterious reincarnation.
Tonight’s Episode: “The King’s Decision“
The woman, Director Goodsky, duels Arthur and wins but senses his potential. Arthur agrees to learn from her if she extends protections to his family. He also defers his enrollment until he is the appropriate age, planning to spend three years as an adventurer first. First get parental approval, then the appropriate equipment.
Golden Kamuy final season(Goruden Kamui)
Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.
Tonight’s Episode: “Our Kamuy“
The final search for the gold begins at Goryoukaku as the 7th Division closes in.
