Irregular Screening of Saturday 13th December 2025

JAFWA has managed to achieve another year of anime in 2025!
Our regular program is now complete, apart from the last 4 episodes of “Zatsu Tabi“, which will be screened alongside the new program in January 2026.
However, before we take a break for the Summer Holiday season, JAFWA has one last special, irregular screening this Saturday (lucky you), to keep our dear attendees going over the Festive Season Break before we all return refreshed and revived in 2026, on January 10^th.

This week’s JAFWA screening contains a bunch of interesting items – some favourites from yesteryear, some new stuff that we haven’t previously found room in the program for, some Christmas related episodes, and some episodes that don’t share Christmas cheer. A little something for most people. Enjoy!

We start the night off with anime from the earliest days of JAFWA, the gender switching “Ranma 1/2” and its romantic and martial arts hijinks.
Then we follow a pair of police officers as they deal with the quirky characters in their Tokyo patrol area as they quest to keep peace and ensure a happy Christmas.
But have you ever wondered how Santa manages to deliver all those presents without a full-time staff giving support, and yet this staff will need to be trained.
Then a short movie designed to promote a Panasonic pavilion.
Followed by a long OAV episode, set earlier in the chronology of “Re: Zero”.
And we end the night with a couple of bonus episodes of violent people seeking stolen gold shortly after the Russo-Japanese war of 1905. These are chapters from the original manga that were never permitted in the original TV anime. (The translations of the original manga are in the JAFWA library)

Anime is going mainstream. This year at the cinemas has been the “Demon Slayer” movie, followed by the “Chainsaw Man” movie, and now the “Jujitsu Kaisen” movie. Lfe is wonderful for anime fans.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, or similar, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• From Thursday December 4^th 2025 — Movie length sequel to what we have watched at JAFWA. Jujitsu Kaisen: Execution at assorted cinemas. Check to see if sessions are subbed or dubbed.
• Tuesday December 9^th 2025 — Mamoru Hosoda Retrospective The Girl Who Leapt Through Time in 4K at Luna Leederville.
• Saturday December 13^th 2025 — JAFWA’s final screening of the year will be an irregular program.
• Monday December 15^th 2025, 6:30PM — Luna Monday double feature at Leederville – “Princess Mononoke” and “Laputa: Castle in the Sky” Japanese language, English subtitles, 15 minute intermission between the two movies.

Ranma 1/2 (Ranma Nibun-no-Ichi)

Saotome Ranma, a teenage martial artist, and his father Genma travel to the ‘cursed training ground’ of Jusenkyo in China. There, despite the warnings of the Chinese guard, they fall into the cursed springs. From now on, whenever Ranma is doused in cold water, he turns in to a girl, and a cute, well-built red-head at that. Hot water changes him back into a man again, but only until the next time. To make matters worse, his father engages him to Tendo Akane, a girl who hates boys.

This Evening’s Episode: “Tendo Family Christmas Scramble” from 1993

Eldest Tendo daughter Kasumi has a dream where she is asked by Santa Clause to have a Christmas party at the Dojo. Easy to say, but less easy to pull of with all the weird people associated.

You’re Under Arrest (Taiho Shichauzo)

Natsumi and Miyuki are policewomen at the Bokuto Police Station. This story recounts the exploits and adventures they have in dealing with the strange characters they are forced to deal with ‘all in a day’s work’.

This evening’s Episode: “Santa Claus Panic!” from 1996

The officers of the precinct are preparing for Christmas, an occasion of cheer and celebration.A man dressed as Santa Claus burgles the house of preschooler Maho, stealing all the jewelry and money her parents had.

Movie: Santa Company (Santa Kanpan?)

Noel, a young girl to whom Christmas is a particularly lonely time, as her mother left long ago and her father is too busy at Christmas time to come home. One day when she’s heading to her apartment, the elevator instead opens into “Santa Company”, the headquarters of all Santa’s operations, in Finland. After some confusion she is brought into the introductory class where she learns how the company works, and then meets her father who works at the company as head of the present department. She decides to become an apprentice Tonttu, which here is an assistance role helping wrap and prepare presents for delivery. She has until dawn of Christmas Day to become a full-fledged Tonttu, but if she screws up she will lose her job and have to leave her new friends behind. Unfortunately, no one can tell her how one graduates from apprenticeship, except that she needs to be able to “pass the exam” and be able to say just what the most important task of the Santas is.

Movie: Land of Nomo

Sora, a girl who once loved singing, became afraid to sing and lost her joy. One day, she and her little brother Daichi discovered a mystical butterfly at a magical pond called Mirror Pond. Drawn to its glow, Sora reached out but fell in, with Daichi following after. They found themselves in a mysterious world where they met a quirky girl named Rococo. Together, they embarked on an adventure through the Land of NOMO, where Sora began to confront the emotions she had buried deep inside.

Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (“Re: Life in a Different World from Zero”)

Subaru Natsuki is an ordinary high school student who is lost in an alternate world, where he is rescued by a beautiful, silver-haired girl. He stays near her to return the favour, but the destiny she is burdened with is more than Subaru can imagine. Enemies attack one by one, and both of them are killed. He then finds out he has the power to rewind death, back to the time he first came to this world. But only he remembers what has happened since.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Frozen Bond” from 2019

A prequel story set seven years before the beginning of the Re:ZERO series. Emilia lives in a secluded forest covered in snow with the spirit Puck. The forest holds a secret: the elves who once lived there have been frozen into ice. Emilia is feared by the people living on the outskirts of the forest, but makes a humble living selling magic stones and warding off Magic Beasts. One day, however, her peaceful life is disrupted when the Great Spirit of Fire Melakuera decides to lay his judgment upon her.

Golden Kamuy OAVs

Saichi Sugimoto, a survivor of the battle of 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War has become a miner in Hokkaido in order to provide for the widow of his dead comrade, Toraji. He hears a dubious story of hidden Ainu gold stashed by a criminal group, and accidentally finds clues to its location. He decides to search for the gold along with an Ainu girl, Asirpa, who rescues him from Hokkaido’s harsh northern wilderness. Though other parties are also hunting for the gold.
