JAFWA continues in May

It is the merry month of May, and some have already celebrated either Beltane or Samhain (depending on which hemisphere your Seasons are aligned to). But here at JAFWA we know that night is in her ascendancy and it is time for JAFWA to start an hour earlier with our Winter Hours.

This is a good point for the anime-interested to start attending JAFWA with the rest of us otaku, for this week most of our new program is starting from episode #1.

1. Our first item was screened just a couple of weeks ago, so we will go directly onto episode #2 of post-apocalyptic (of the gentle kind) customer service.
2. Then we continue the adventures of the least memorable but most powerful psychic.
3. Before the Dinner Break was originally screened in February, but that is long enough ago that we should repeat the first episode of this doctor detective series.
4. Then people have indicated that they want to see the further VR adventures of the spin-off series from Sword Art Online.
5. Then the only show that continues from before May, the gorgeous adventures of a discreet apothecary in a Tang-era China that never was.
6. Then the space opera continues with the third season of the heroic legends of the future.
7. Before the Late Break it seems that I was not the only person curious to see how the adventures of a lone human in a anthropomorphic animal world turns out.
8. After the Late Break we continue the smash hit Korean sword and sorcery in the city, where we screened the first two episodes just a couple of weeks ago, so we will go directly onto episode #3.
9. Then we continue our short OAV series based off of the works of horror-meister Junji Ito.
10. And to end the night we go onto the second series of a vigilante gone isekai whose deranged fantasies may actually be true.

Remember that in July we will be having our AGM and committee elections. What item do you want raised at the AGM, and who of our signed up members wish to run/rule JAFWA?

If you don’t want to sponsor an entire night like both Lindsay and Elliot did last year, there is the other scheme for our signed up members. On the night nearest your birthday, as Greg and Sally did, you can nominate something to play during the Dinner Break (limited to 30 minutes max). You may have to help us source this material, so plan and inform us in advance please.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these fannish events of interest are scheduled to happen:

• From Thursday May 1^st 2025 — For vocaloid fans everywhere, Colorful Stage! The Movie: A Miku Who Can’t Sing will be appearing at various cinemas. It is supposedly in Japanese with subtitles, but we advise you to check beforehand.
• Saturday May 10^th 2025, 1615 — JAFWA goes to Winter hours, an hour earlier from 4:15PM to 9:45PM
• From Thursday June 6^th 2025 — Preview of the second season, of DanDaDan: Evil-Eye will be appearing at various cinemas. You should check if the session is subbed or dubbed.
• Weekend June 28^th and 29^th 2025, 1000-1800 — A big crowded fandom festival Supanova 2025- Perth in Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Remember to make time to come to JAFWA.
• Saturday July 19^th 2025, — JAFWA Annual General Meeting to be held before the screening.
• Saturday July 19^th 2025, — JAFWA committee elections to be held during the Dinner Break, assuming enough people nominate.

• From Thursday September 11^th 2025 — The long awaited last season starts with Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Infinity Castle will be appearing at various cinemas, in bothe subbed and dubbed versions. Choose wisely.

Apocalypse Hotel

There is a solitary hotel in Tokyo’s Ginza district. After society has collapsed, humanity has disappeared, and nature has begun to reclaim most of the land. Despite the lack of guests, Yachiyo is a hotel management robot who continues to manage the Ginzar? hotel alongside other robots.

This Evening’s Episode: “Tradition Evolves With Innovation and Experimentation“

Yachiyo greets the alien guest, but has trouble communicating with it due to their language barrier. Despite this, Yachiyo and the staff resolve to show their utmost hospitality to the alien guest. Over the next three days, the alien appears to collect plant samples from the surrounding area, but Yachiyo and the staff are unsure if it is actually enjoying its stay. A new robot, Environmental Checker Robot, arrives at the hotel.

Mob Psycho 100 III

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

This Evening’s Episode: “Future ~Career Paths~“

At the end of last season, In order to save the boss of The Claw, Suzuki, Mob absorbed all of the energy and caused a giant broccoli to sprout within the city. The broccoli is now revered as a divine tree by the Psycho Helmet Religion. Meanwhile Mob is given an assignment to write his career path for the future, which he struggles to decide upon. Reigen suggests becoming a full-time employee of his, but Mob insists it is only a part-time gig for him. A client arrives with a supposed “cursed idol” that Reigen believes is a fake, but Mob and Serizawa sense it actually is cursed.

Ameku M.D.: Doctor Detective (“Ameko Takao no Suiri Karte” literally “Ameku Takao’s Mystery Medical Record”)

Dr. Takao Ameku is the brilliant yet eccentric director of investigative pathology at Tenikai General Hospital, in charge of diagnosing patients the other hospital departments cannot. However, due to her love of solving mysteries, Takao also gets involved with mysterious deaths and murders, all while dragging along her assistant Yu Takanashi in her various adventures.

This evening’s Episode: “Dr. Sherlock“

At Tenikai General Hospital Dr’s Yu Takanashi and Mai Konoike struggle to diagnose two patients; a young boy with multiple symptoms and an elderly man with stomach pain. Yu’s boss Takao Ameku, Head of investigative pathology, impatiently waits to start his tutoring. Yu refuses to leave until his patients are diagnosed so Takao quickly diagnoses them using her incredible diagnostic and investigative abilities. Then a young man found on a construction site is brought in with his leg seemingly bitten off by an animal. The man is already dead but Yu notices the man’s blood has turned blue.

SAO alternate: Gun Gale Online season 2

This is a side story from the Sword Art Online universe, this is all new characters – no Kirito or Asuna. We follow the story of Karen Kohiruimaki, a university student with a complex about her abnormal height. She begins playing a VR game called Gun Gale Online after it gives her the cute, petit avatar that she has always wanted.

Tonight’s Episode: “What Happens Twice Will Happen Thrice“

With the Third Squad Jam beginning, Pitohui convinces LLENN and Fukaziroh to join her and M’s team “LPFM” so they can cooperate rather than compete against each other. LLENN is hesitant until Pitohui reminds her of her promise to have a rematch against Team SHINC. Meanwhile, other teams make their preparations for the Squad Jam as well while Fukaziroh warns LLENN that the Third Squad Jam will introduce new secret rules as teams are eliminated.

The Apothecary Diaries (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto) season 2

Apothecary Maomao was just out collecting herbs when she was kidnapped by procurers for the Imperial harem, an easy way for unscrupulous people to get money by having “relatives” go work in the Rear Palace. Hiding her skills and knowledge, Maomao hopes to just glide by, earning as little as possible for her kidnappers during her term of service, but such is not to be: when royal infants begin dying, Maomao can’t resist letting people know the cause. This catches the eye of the far-too-handsome Jinshi, who elevates Maomao from laundry maid to poison taster to the Emperor’s favourite concubine. So much for flying under the radar…

Tonight’s Episode: “The Baths“

With Xiaolan’s term of service ending in six months, she begins considering job options outside the palace. Shisui proposes they frequent the rear palace baths as attendants to make connections with concubines and court ladies they rarely interact with. Consort Gyokuyou supports Maomao’s plan to help Xiaolan, also seeing it as a chance to gather palace gossip..

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These (Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Die Neue These Kaikou) season 3

In humanity’s distant future, two interstellar states – the monarchic Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance – are embroiled in a never-ending war. The story focuses on the exploits of rivals Reinhard von Lohengramm and Yang Wen-li as they rise to power and fame in the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance respectively.

Tonight’s Episode: “First Campaign“

After all the recent political shenanigans, both sides have lost a lot of experienced soldiers, and it is time to train up new recruits. The Iserlohn garrison forces set forth on training exercises mixed with patrols. Yang We-li’s ward Julian Mintz will see his first combat action.

Bye Bye, Earth (“Bai Bai, Aasu”) season 2

Despite having incredible fighting skills and the strength to wield the enormous sword Runding, Belle Lablac has grown up as an outcast due to being the only human in a world of anthropomorphic animals. Desperate to find a place where she belongs, she goes on a quest to find others like her.

Tonight’s Episode: “Homesick: Now Budding in the Echoes“

Kitty meets Sian and berates him for using Belle as a pawn, but Sian leaves. Belle is still suffering from Adonis’s Assault, and healing her will take a great toll on the mermaid Bennett/Benedictine.

Solo Leveling

It’s been over a decade since the sudden appearance of the “gates”—the paths that connect our world with a different dimension. Since then, certain humans have awakened to supernatural powers. We call these individuals “hunters.” Hunters make their living by using their powers to conquer dungeons inside the gates. Notoriously weak hunter named Sung Jin-woo gets a unique opprtunity to get stronger.

Tonight’s Episode: “It’s Like a Game“

Jin-woo wakes up after three days of sleep, initially thinking that he only dreamed the events of the double dungeon. Investigators from the Hunters Association confirm that it really did happen (Joo-hee is traumatized, and Mr. Song is likely to retire after losing his arm) and check if Jin-woo experienced the very rare “second awakening”. Jin-woo discovers a message similar to the one that declared him a Player, with daily goals and a penalty for failing to complete them. You don’t ignore this game.

Uzumaki (literally “spiral”)

Kirei lives in a town that lately has odd occurrences, and each one somehow is connected to a spiral. Soon the spiral occurrences spread to infect even the bodies of people, which suddenly turns the everyday events in her life into chaos and horror.

Tonight’s Episode: “Episode 2“

Katayama morphs into a giant snail with a spiral shell. His parents refuse to believe this has happened, and so Katayama has to live in a chicken coop in the school. A fellow student, Tsumura, also morphs into a giant snail. Elsewhere, fellow students Kazunori Nishiki and Yoriko Endo love each other even though their families are feuding. They secretly meet in an abandoned rowhouse, where they stumble upon two mating snakes who have twisted their bodies together. Kirie’s hair goes spirally, and the abandoned lighthouse starts working again.

The Eminence in Shadow (Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!) season 2

Even in his past life, Cid’s dream wasn’t to become a protagonist or a final boss. He’d rather lie low as a minor character until it’s prime time to reveal he’s a mastermind or at least, do the next best thing-pretend to be one. And now that he’s been reborn into another world, he’s ready to set the perfect conditions to live out his dreams to the fullest.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Lawless City“

Shadow Garden informs Cid that large amounts of money have been flowing to Lawless City, a crime-infested slum that belongs to no kingdom. This coincides with the Red Moon heralding the return of the vampiric Elizabeth the Crimson Blood Queen, one of Lawless City’s three rulers. Claire, who had been sent by the Dark Knight Association to slay vampires, has dragged Cid along with her. Cid is “saved” by Mary the Ancient Vampire Hunter and is excited to meet the newest character in his role-playing game.
