Screening on the evening of September 11^th 2021

After the grand experiment of starting (and ending) an hour earlier in August, this month we return to holding JAFWA sessions starting at 5:15PM. Mainly due to our old enemy the sun, trying to once more take ascendency in the sky.

However, we will be organising a formal poll of your ideas regarding our August experiment, and the possibility of a permanent change to our Winter operating hours.

Recently, anime sessions have been released in 1-cour (ie a Season of 12~13 weekly episodes) blocks, where a series that would have 24 episodes across two Seasons (ie 2 cour) is instead is released in two half series. And so it is with the second season of “That Time I Was Re-incarnated as a Slime”.
This week we hit the midpoint (ie end of part 1) of the second series, so after tonight we will take a hiatus for a while before considering showing part2 of the second season of “That Time I Was Re-incarnated as a Slime”. Meaning next week we get to see a new regular series, so stay tuned.

This week we will be starting a new regular series, and the third series of “Fruits Basket” was chosen from the monthly survey rankings. We will also have two preview episodes, the intriguing “Sonny Boy”, and the “Cells at Work: Code Black”, set in an unhealthy body with unhealthy habits.

Annual General Meeting resolutions

Resolutions that occurred during the AGM on July 17^th include:

1. Experiment with earlier hours during the coldest part of Winter. We have changed the bookings for August for this trial.
2. Have a celebratory Dinner for the JAFWA committee members and general members, to be held on the evening of Saturday December 18^th 2021, in lieu of a screening.
3. New mascot design – will try asking at the next Artist’s Alley.
4. Tell people they can sponsor an anime night.
5. Obtain new mascot design.

We will be attempting to implement these as soon as practical.

Currently we are looking for suggestions for a location for the dinner, and we are taking expressions of interest for attendees.
We will need to make the booking by the end of October, so places and attendance by then.

Covid-19 Safety Precautions

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible future waves of CoVid-19, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
– Help is always welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19 precautions.
– Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. There will be Contract Tracing, either by the SafeWA app on your keitai (mobile phones), or by signing in at the contact tracing sheet near the entry.

Fruits Basket – final season

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when stressed or grasped by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “I’ll Hold Another Banquet ” season 3

Still in shock with Kureno’s revelations about Akito-sama, Tohru turns to Saki for counseling, fearing how Arisa will react upon learning that Kureno can’t reciprocate her feelings due to Akito’s dependence on him. Akito has her own mother issues.

That Time I Was Re-incarnated as a Slime (Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken) season 2

37-year-old Satoru Mikami died at the hands of a robber, he awakens to a fresh start in a new world…as the lowest of the low – a slime monster. Now champion of monsters Rimuru Tempest ends the orc war and earns the esteemed title as Slime Chancellor. After recovering from his transformation, Rimuru is informed that the Kingdom of Eurazania was destroyed and Carrion defeated by Milim with assistance from the Demon Lord Frey, but the citizens had safely took refuge in Tempest. The Primordial Demon whom Rimuru summoned officially becomes his subordinate under the name “Diablo” and Rimuru fulfills his promise to Veldora by releasing his seal and giving him a new body.

Odd Taxi

Set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, it follows the story of Odokawa, a 41-year old Walrus taxi driver shown to have no relatives and does not have much to do with others. But he usually has conversations with other animal inhabitants that ride in his taxi on their way home. With Odokawa having those conversations with several people, they may give him some leads to a high school girl who has disappeared several days ago.

This evening’s Episode: “Tanaka’s Revolution”

The person Odoakawa nearly ran over trying to reach his date with Shirokawa is a black cat named Tanaka. Tanaka’s life is one of addiction and loss. One evening, Tanaka finally acquires his favourite game’s long-sought Dodo, until a cab driven by Odokawa nearly hits him while he celebrates, causing the Dodo to be lost. Then Dobu’s gun is uncovered.

I’m a Spider, So What? (Kuma desu ga, nanika)

After a Japanese classroom was destroyed by a mysterious explosion all the students reincarnated as humans on a fantasy world except for a female student who had the lowest reputation on the classroom, she was reincarnated as a spider monster. Being the weakest monster on the dungeon she need to survive using all her human intellect and courage.

Tonight’s Episode: “My Battle Has, Only Just Begun? ”

Nameless finally takes the plunge to destroy the Earth Dragon Araba, having chosen and prepared her battle-field. However Araba is a tough and canny opponent, and its unspent Skill points may turn the tide of battle yet. Will our Nameless protagonist spider ever find her way out of the dungeon?

retro – Shoujo Kakumei Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)

Utena Tenjou, a teenage girl who expresses her desire to be a prince through her strong-willed personality and tomboyish manner of dress. She finds herself drawn into a series of sword duels at Ohtori Academy, to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the “Rose Bride” who possesses the “power to revolutionize the world”.

Tonight’s Episode: “Whispers in the Dark ”

Ruka, the former fencing team captain and Juri’s mentor, comes back to Ohtori after a long illness and resumes his position as fencing captain. As Juri comes to terms with his return, Shiori is quick to realize Ruka’s connection to Juri and begins to date him.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”) – season 2

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “Shadows Cast by Divine Light ”

Shinmon recovers from the poison fired into his body by the Holy Sol defender through his resistance to toxins and together with Joker they defeat the remaining Holy Sol defenders. They enter the church and Joker exposes a hidden trapdoor to the levels below with access to the forbidden Nether. Shinmon will not allow Joker to keep any more secrets.

One day during summer vacation, a group of 36 boys and girls from the same school find themselves and their school building stranded in a void far away from home. Over time, while trying to get back home, they realize that they have individual supernatural abilities, but also find it difficult to navigate their own interpersonal relationships.

This evening’s Episode: “The Island at the Far End of Summe ”

Their whole world now reduced to just their school, with an impenetrable black void surrounding it, the few students trapped there are going stir crazy. Several students have gained super-powers, and various cliques of haves and have-nots are forming. Can order be restored? Or imposed? Why is this all happening?

Cells at Work: Code Black (Hataraku Saibou Burakku)

In contrast to the main series, which is set in a generally healthy human body, Cells at Work! Code Black is set in a “black” environment of a body suffering an unhealthy lifestyle. The story follows the anthropomorphic cells struggling to maintain the body.

This evening’s Episode: “Smoking, Bacteria, and the Beginning of the End ”

A naive and idealistic rookie red blood cell named AA2153 starts his first day of work and is overwhelmed by the state of the body he works in. The blood vessels are clogged by cholesterol, the red blood cells are not allowed to take breaks, and everybody is grumpy and rude due to the body being under stress. Delivering oxygen with a veteran red blood cell, they face a carbon monoxide cloud and are saved from a group of Pneumococcus bacteria by a white blood cell named U-1196.

Wonder Egg Priority

Avoiding school, Ai scores a “Wonder Egg” from a gachapon machine at a deserted arcade. But now when Ai falls asleep a girl emerges from her Wonder Egg, the worlds of dreams and reality begin to collide. And it’s all connected.

Tonight’s Episodes: “A Bare Knife ”

i meets Rika Kawai, a former junior idol who cheats her out of her money to buy eggs. Ai feels troubled when Rika continues to insert herself in her personal life, but after falling asleep next to her, she is drawn into Rika’s Egg World. The two of them are tasked to protect Miko and Mako, two fangirls who committed suicide to follow after their favorite singer, Yu-Yu.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 4 part 1

Young Eldian Warrior candidates Gabi Braun and Falco Grice, seeking to inherit Reiner’s Armored Titan four years after the failed mission to claim the Founding Titan. As Marley’s dominance over competing nations begins to weaken due to the development of anti-titan weaponry, they plan to invade Paradis to develop their military using the resources on the island and also recover the Founding Titan. However, Eren Yeager and the Survey Corps have reached the Marley shoreline

Tonight’s Episode: “Children of the Forest ”

In the forest, Zeke tells Levi that four years earlier on Marley’s orders, his spinal fluid was released in a gaseous form towards the Ragako villagers on Paradis. He says it initially paralyzed them, then he turned them into Titans with his scream. Zeke claims he did it to maintain his cover, but Levi accuses him of not truly caring for the people he killed. During the Braus family’s dinner, Kaya points Nicolo out to Gabi and Falco as the Marleyan who invited them, explaining that he was probably in love with Sasha.
