Screening on Saturday 24^th October 2020

We continue the countdown to JAFWA’s 30^th Aniversary celebrations. Rejoice!
The screenings continue here at JAFWA.

This week we shall have two preview episodes of anime. Both are due to suggestions by our dear JAFWA members (aka JAFWAites), yet fit in well with the approaching 30^th anniversary celebrations, as one preview title is from several years ago that we did npt screen at the time, and the other title is a remake of an old anime that JAFWA did not manage to screen.
Isn’t it wonderful that there is so much anime out there that JAFWA cannot screen it all?

JAFWA’s 30^th Aniversary is quickly approaching, and a reminder that we may still have a limited number of tickets for an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony on the day. Buy your $10 ticket early! as they are going fast. President Drew may still have some to sell this week.

As a side note, quite a few people seem to think 2020 is not a very good year. Be aware that we have entered the new calendar season, and some Japanese calendars have been listed already, such as here and here. I have already taken an order. Do you also want to be cheered up by 2021?

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible second wave of Corona, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
Help would be welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19. Set Up begins ~4:45pm, while the Screening should begin at 5:15pm, or later should the set-up not yet be complete. Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. And we need to wipe the chairs down before they are stacked away.

Fruits Basket (2020) season 2

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when stressed or grasped by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “You Cried for Me”

Tohru’s homeroom teacher, Mayuki Shiraki-sensei, has a rather surprising connection with some of the zodiac cursed Sohmas. Her best friend Kana was engaged to Hatori (the Dragon), and she has a not-quite-finished relationship with Shigure (the Dog). Mayu is still upset that Kana’s memory was erased. But she has other emotions as well.

Eizoukan niwa Te o Dasu na! (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!)

Midori, Tsubame, and Sayaka are an energetic trio of first-year high school girls who come together in the Eizouken (Video Research Club) to turn their anime dreams into a reality. Midori is nervous to create an anime alone. She meets Tsubame who appears to be a well-to-do girl but she really has artistic dreams of being an animator. Midori’s best friend Sayaka has the financial sense to bring the project to fruition and joins the pair on their quest.

This evening’s Episode: “Aim for Comet A! ”

Kanamori reveals that Eizouken’s recent successes have sparked a flood of requests from other school clubs to make an anime for them, but the DVD sales from their robot anime earned little profit, so Kanamori turned them down to focus on another anime that will sell even more DVDs. What is Kanamori’s focus on money?

Dr Stone

Typical student Taiju Oki tells his science-loving friend Senku Ishigami that he will confess his feelings to their classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa. He prepares to make his confession to Yuzuriha under a camphor tree on the school grounds, but his attempt is interrupted when a bright light appears in the sky. Taiju pushes Yuzuriha to the tree to protect her as the light petrifies them along with the entire human population. After 3700 years spent trapped in stone, Senku and Taiju are somehow revived from their petrified state six months apart in what they now call the Stone World.

This evening’s Episode: “Wave of Science”

Senku unveils the pile of tungsten for final preparation. After being crushed into a fine powder, it needs to be heated at an extremely high temperature for it to become usable. While Senku readies the tungsten powder, he charges Chrome and Kaseki to create a method of pinpoint high-temperature heating using everything they have learned since Senku’s arrival in the village.

Tomoya Okazaki is a third year high school student resentful of his life. His mother passed away from a car accident when he was younger, causing his father to resort to alcohol and gambling. This results in fights between the two until Tomoya’s shoulder is injured in a fight. Since then, Tomoya has had distant relationships with his father, causing him to become a delinquent over time. While on a walk to school, he meets a strange girl named Nagisa Furukawa. The two begin hanging out and slowly, as time goes by, Tomoya finds his life shifting in a new direction.

Tonight’s Episodes: “On The Hillside Path Where The Cherry Blossoms Flutter ”

On the way to Hikarizaka High School, Tomoya Okazaki, a delinquent third-year student wishing a change to occur in his life, meets a strange girl on the hill talking to herself named Nagisa Furukawa.

Planetarian: The Reverie of a Little Planet

The world has fallen into decay.Humanity is all but lost. This is a story of a junker who wonders into a city guarded by automated defense units.Join him on his life changing journey to the stars.

Tonight’s Episode: “Yumemi’s Projection”

Yumemi begins the projection, but just as the special presentation is about to start, the power goes out. The junker discovers that the electrical power that had been running to the building has now permanently shut off.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “Wearing His Pride ”

Lieutenant Hinawa searches the tunnels for Shinra. He encounters Arrow and they immediately fire at each other. Shinra finds Licht, but a White-Clad holds a knife at his throat. Maki finds Iris and Tamaki, while Giovanni and Lisa find Vulcan and Obi.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Hashira Meeting ”

With Nezuko being tested as a demon, Tanjiro is pinned by Obanai but uses a breathing technique to break the ropes on his wrists and run to Nezuko, Giyuu grabs Obanai so he doesn’t interfere any further. Tanjiro stops by the porch and calls out to her, knowing he can’t interfere directly.

Keiichi Maebara has transferred from the city to the village of Hinamizawa that lies deep in the wilderness. The village was spared from a plan to build a dam that would have sunk it under a lake, and it is now surrounded by nature and following its ancient customs. Keiichi makes new friends there and lives an ordinary life. But once a year, Hinamizawa village celebrates its festival, Watanagashi, and with it Keiichi’s calm days are over, and a chain of unending tragedy begins.

Tonight’s Episodes: “Demon Deception – Part 1 ”

Keichi Maebara spends his day having fun with his friends and is offered a tour around Hinamizawa by Mion Sonozaki & Rena Ryuuguu. Afterwards he goes with Rena to the Dam site to help her retrieve the coronel because she finds it cute. While there he has flashbacks of an event that hasn’t happened yet, and learns something that his friends have been hiding regarding the Dam Project.

Retro – Touhai Densetsu Akagi (Mahjong Legend Akagi)

After a death-defying game of chicken one evening in 1958, Akagi nonchalantly enters a yakuza mahjong parlor to shake the police’s trail. Although he is unfamiliar with the rules of mahjong, his gambling intuition saves a small-time gambler, Nangou, and grants him a seat at the gambling table. Thus begins Akagi’s legend among the Yakuaza as the best player and gambler of Mahjong.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Magic of Coincidence”

Akagi rejects several opportunities to win, and Urabe wins the hand, widening the difference of points to over 70,000. After several coincidences, Akagi wins the next hand and cuts the difference to 22,500. In the final hand, Akagi induces Urabe to deal the tiles he wants.

Vinland Saga

set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “A Gamble ”

Thorkell continues on his way to catch Sweyn’s army with Ragnar and Prince Canute as his hostages, but a group of the Danish army catch up to them and threaten to wipe them out. Thorkell cunningly releases the hostages, but then goads the Danish soldiers into a senseless attack.
