Screening on Saturday 30th September 2023

Screening on the evening of Saturday, September 30th 2023

This is the last week that JAFWA will be operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

The Spring Equinox has passed, and our old enemy the Sun continues to gain ascendancy! All praise the Librarian Kris and his Sun Disactivator for granting us legions of otaku better viewing of anime.
This week we continue with our Bean Poll as to the fate of our retro show “City Hunter”, which was exciting in its day, but has not aged well in the intervening 30 years. So, only a half dozen episodes in, we are tasked with choosing between 3 different fates:

  1. Continue screening “City Hunter” after the Late Break.
  2. Discontinue screening “City Hunter” after this week, and find another retro slot item (probably “El Hazard”).
  3. Do away with “City Hunter” after this week, and use the emptied timeslot to show extra episodes of our regular items to try and finish by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, it is the end of the month of September, and we all know what that means – this week we have our Monthly Survey, where our dear JAFWAites can express their opinion on the various programs previewed and other suggested possibilities, utilising a scalar grading system.
And later, we have the monthly Member’s Prize Draw.

In addition to to all the other excitement, we will screen a preview episode before the survey, a spin-off of the Love Live! Sunshine idol anime, where the characters are re-imagined in a fantasy setting.

Screening on the evening of Saturday, September 23rd 2023

JAFWA still operating in Winter hours for this month! Program starts at 4:15PM!

It is that dread time of year again, when daylight increases to match the length of the delightful darkness of night. The Spring Equinox is upon us, as our old enemy the Sun gains ascendancy! All praise the Librarian Kris and his Sun Disactivator for granting us legions of otaku better viewing of anime.

With “Demon Slayer” now out of the way, we have room in the program to resume screening “Jujutsu Kaisen” and “In/Spectre”.
And we also have room for a preview episode, one that reveals what goes on within Church.

Saint Cecillia and Pastor Lawrence

Be aware that as a favour to JAFWA members, long time member Dale is doing a bulk order (in order to reduce shipping costs) of Japanese Calendars for 2024. His cutoff for taking (pre-)orders is definitely before September 30th. While must people order anime themed calendars, he can order just about any calendar listed under here.

Screening on Saturday 9th September 2023

Screening on the evening of Saturday, September 9th 2023

JAFWA still operating in Winter hours for this month! Program starts at 4:15PM!

Spring has sprung upon us as we at JAFWA enter the month of September.
Hoping that the Evolve pop culture festival at the Cannington Showgrounds, behind Bunnings managed to succour some people’s fannish desires last weekend.
And, believe it or not, I think that “The First Slam Dunk” anime movie can still be found in cinemas, with English subtitles for those who don’t understand the Japanese language.

Since they can’t keep animating episodes of “Golden Kamuy” fast enough, this week we start a new regular series in its place (which placed highly in the monthly surveys). We will be previewing an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am reading and thinking is very slow and perplexing, yet I keep searching for the next volume feeling that something brilliant is about to unfold.
You may also notice that we have re-arranged the program slightly – our retro series “City Hunter” from before far too many things we take for granted these days, and which was a fan favourite thirty years ago has not aged well, in that the protagonist engaged in behaviour that is intolerable these days, rather than merely unacceptable as in the late 80s.

Heavenly Delusion Eminence in Shadow

We are trying to fill the program for the final screening of 2023 in December, What do you want to see?

Looking for volunteers to help with some extra-curricular activities for JAFWA. First, in October there is a fund-raising sausage sizzle at Bunnings Cannington. Then JAFWA is doing the anime screening at Kai-Con 2023.

Expected program for the evening of Saturday September 9th, 2023.

No Screening this Saturday, 2nd September 2023

No JAFWA until Saturday 9th September 2023!

JAFWA is taking its regular break from Screening this Saturday. We wish to be refreshed when we return in September proper.
However, if you need some fannish activity this coming weekend, there is the Evolve pop culture festival at the Cannington Showgrounds, behind Bunnings.
I think that “The First Slam Dunk” anime movie can still be found in cinemas.

Though if you attend the Hall this Saturday from Midday, you are likely to encounter the local Doctor Who club.

When JAFWA returns on the 9th we will be previewing an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am thinking is very slow and perplexing, yet I keep reading the next volume feeling that something brilliant is about to unfold.

With the Equinox rapidly approaching and Sol becoming ascendant, September will be the last month we operate in Winter Hours, as last week showed, we need to bring out the Sun disactivator.

The expected program

Below is the tentative program for the evening of Saturday September 9th, 2023.

Event Afternoon followed by Screening on Saturday 26th August 2023

Event Afternoon before JAFWA Screening

JAFWA has the hall from about 1PM to 3:30PM, where it is make our own amusement time.

Does anyone want hall space for nerf gun battles? Bring your own ping-pong? Table top games? Does anybody have their own game machine and games they want their fellow JAFWAites to play? JAFWA will bring out the projector and screen. I am not certain we have access to the outdoor area, but we will try to keep you off the street.
In the past people have brought along video games and the hardware to play them, and sewing machines for cosplay creating. What do you want to do? Just so long as it fun, legal, ethical, and we don’t scuff the floor of the Hall.

Sally has advised that she is going to try cooking hamburgers. Willing (or not) volunteers required for taste testing.

August greetings for those of you coming to see us on the last week of August.
And I think we all know what that means – this week we have our Monthly Survey, where our dear JAFWAites can express their opinion on the various programs previewed and other suggested possibilities, utilising a scalar grading system.
And later, we have the monthly Member’s Prize Draw.

While “City Hunter” does feature a charcater with excessive libido and no shame from before the #MeToo generation, it does appear that it was only the first episode that contained excessive inappropriate material.
This week’s episode of “Golden Kamuy” will be the last one shown, until the next series is animated. For those of use who have read ahead with the managa in the JAFWA library, we do so want the battle of Sapporo Beer factory to be animated.

This week will also preview an episode of anime from Japan from a few years back – a slice of life with outdoors camping.

Screening on Saturday 19th August 2023

Screening on the evening of Saturday, August 19th 2023

JAFWA still operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

Hello Everybody, such a pleasure to see so many new faces.
Though I think I must apologise. When we screened “City Hunter” last week, we had forgotten how much society’s values had changed in 3 decades. It was inappropriate of us to put it on so early in the night. Sorry. This week we will put this retro anime from before the fall of the Soviet Union and screen it after the Dinner break.
Also, an Advisory. This week’s episode of “Golden Kamuy”, amongst the other violence contains a scene where two perverts weaponise a recreational procreative activity. Though somewhat significant to the story, it has an icky factor not suitable for the young and pure of heart.

This week will also preview an episode of anime from Japan – a sort of reverse isekai where a necromantic fantasy character arrives on an Earth like ours.

Witch From Mercury Dead Mount Death Play

There is currently a Winter Sale at CrunchyRoll (formerly Madman), until Aug 20. Order through JAFWA to benefit from out bulk ordering to get free postage.

Last week asking what should we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Lindsay has suggested “micro-chibi“, while I am partial to “chibi-chibi“. Please provide worthwhile suggestion for the official name (“Chibi McChibi Chibiface”, and variants thereof, is only worth getting hurt).

Dale’s Suggestive Remarks

Happily we discover that someone has placed another entry in our suggestion box, from Saturday 12th of August.
The Suggestion is anonymous, to whom I shall address as “Mysterious Correspondent ‘S'”, and apparently has to do with our request for programming for our end of year screening:

  • My hero academia
  • demon slayer
  • Spy family

Some fine suggestions there Mysterious Correspondent ‘S’. Unfortunately, we are looking for what we call an irregular program, thus any current regular items would not fit in. We are currently screening “Demon Slayer”, and will be resuming “Spy x Family” sometime in October. Unless you had a very specific episode of either of these shows in mind, your beloved JAFWA committee will have to put the priority of these requests way down.
We prefer if you tried suggesting a show that hasn’t been on JAFWA recently – as an example the first episode of “Cells at Work”.

However, your other suggestion “My Hero Academia” is a much better possibility. Several years ago, the JAFWA committee was trying to decide between two anime as to which one would fill a preview slot in the JAFWA program. The Committee’s deliberations finally chose “One Punch Man” over “My Hero Academia” by something like half a vote. We have always wondered if we made the right choice.
But if we do choose to screen an episode of “My Hero Academia” in the December program, which episode would you recommend Mysterious Correspondent ‘S’?

Expected program for the evening of Saturday August 19th, 2023.

All items in the original Japanese language with English subtitles. With assistance from a grant from and

Screening on the evening of Saturday, August 12th 2023

JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

August is upon us! Hopefully you remembered to observe the anniversary of the nuclear bombings and Hiroshima and Nagasaki with due solemnity. Lest we forget.

This week two new regular series begin. One of them is a continuation of “Jujutsu Kaisen”, whose first season we finished screening in July. The other is a retro series, noticeably older than “Tenchi Muyo”, to help illustrate how anime has changed over the years – in “City Hunter” we see a non-politically-correct anime from before the era of mobile phones, home computers, and the internet we recognise today.
And just to pile on the goodness, we preview an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am enjoying – the zombie apocalypse is not suppose to be so relaxing and fun.

City Hunter Jujutsu Kaisen 2 Zom 100

No Screening this Saturday, 5th August 2023

No JAFWA until Saturday 12th August 2023!

The year is half over, and JAFWA is taking its regular break from Screening this Saturday. We wish to be refreshed when we return in August proper. Remember to observe the anniversary of the nuclear bombings and Hiroshima and Hagasaki with due solemnity. Lest we forget.

Though if you attend the Hall this Saturday from Midday, you are likely to encounter the local Doctor Who club.
And if you got to the Perth Convention & Exhibition Centre you can attend Pixel Expo 2023 which also may succour you inner fan.

When JAFWA returns on the 12th we will be previewing an episode from the anime adaption of a manga series I am enjoying – the zombie apocalypse is not suppose to be so relaxing and fun.

Screening on Saturday 29th July 2023

Screening on the evening of Saturday, July 29th 2023

JAFWA operating in Winter hours! Program starts at 4:15PM!

As July comes to an end, this week we have our Monthly Survey, where our dear JAFWAites can express their opinion on the various programs previewed and other suggested possibilities, utilising a scalar grading system.
And later, we have the monthly Member’s Prize Draw.

Before the survey during the Dinner Break, we have 3 items in the program:

  1. As per usual, we can’t be entirely certain we will have the next episode of “The Devil is a Part-timer” ready for this week, as it will only be expected to screen on Japanese TV this coming Thursday.
  2. This will be the last episode of “Dr Stone” for a while, as the rest of season 3 isn’t expected until October.
  3. We will have a preview episode before the Dinner Break, displacing “Ningen Fushin” this week. A domestic drama involving a cat.

And we continue on with the other wonderful anime we have in our program. Including the beginning the regular screening of the second season of the TV series “the Ancient Magus Bride”, The final episodes of the first season of “Jujutsu Kaisen”, and the return of “In/Spectre” that took a break for a preview item last week.

Dr Stone The Masterful Cat is Depressed Ancient Magus Bride Jujutsu Kaisen

A reminder of our current issue – what do we call our new computer? Traditionally the JAFWA computer, with its small form factor is known as “chibi“, though for official purposes that only addressed JAFWA’s first dedicated computer. The one that broke down in July 2023 since being in service from 2016, was officially “Shin-chibi“. So what do we call this even smaller form factor computer? Lindsay has suggested “micro-chibi“, while I am partial to “chibi-chibi“. Please provide worthwhile suggestion for the official name (“Chibi McChibi Chibiface”, and variants thereof, is only worth getting hurt).

Expected program for the evening of Saturday July 29th, 2023.
