Screening on Saturday 13th March 2021

Time marches on, and JAFWA returns in March with its usual program of anime goodness.
We hope that you have manage to attend the cinemas and watched and enjoyed the Demon Slayer: Mugen Train movie.

Since we have finished screening the second season of “Fruits Basket“, The weill be room in this week’s program for a preview episode of one of the numerous other anime titles produced in Japan. The JAFWA committee hope you approve of the sampler we have chosen for this week.
I presume people will be hanging out for the third and final season of “Fruits Basket“? Due out soon in Japan.

UraSekai Picnic

The “Demon Slayer” movie, sequal to the anime series seen at JAFWA, called Mugen Train is screening at various cinemas. Mostly in the Japanese language with English subtitles.

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible second wave of CoVid-19, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
Help would be welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19. Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. There will be Contract Tracing, either by the SafeWA app on your keitai (mobile phones), or by signing in at the contact tracing sheet at the front desk. And we need to wipe the chairs down with disinfectant before they are stacked away.

Below is the tentative program for the evening of Saturday March 13th, 2021.

Barring a resurgence of COVID-19 pestilence, these events are scheduled to happen:

  • From Thursday February 25th 2021 — In cinemas the “Demon Slayer” movie Mugen Train. All Screenings in Japanese with English Subtitles (though dubs may become available later).
  • Saturday March 20th 2021, — Perth Japan Festival 2021, held Elizabeth Quay. Visit before coming to JAFWA.
  • Saturday April 17th 2021, 9AM-12PM — Nexus Toy Fair Victoria Park Leisure Centres – Aqualife and Leisurelife.
  • Saturday April 24th 2021, from 1:30PM — JAFWA’s next marathon length screening. Suggestions as to what we should screen will be welcome, as there are some unassigned time to fill.

This evening’s Episode:The Venetian Noble

Arte becomes friends with a seamstress named Darcia and begins teaching her how to read. Yuri asks Arte to become his family’s artisan and tutor to his niece. Leo points out such job offers are rare for apprentices. But a distraction in the form of Leo’s Master’s only daughter in distress may help decide things.

Appare Ranman! (aka “Appare in Full Bloom!”)

After a certain mishap, the brilliant but socially inept engineer Appare Sorano and the shrewd but cowardly samurai Kosame Isshiki find themselves drifting on a boat from Japan to America. Broke, the two decide to compete in the Trans-America Wild Race to win the prize and return to Japan. The two battle crazy rivals, outlaws, and the great outdoors itself as they race through the wild West from the starting line in Los Angeles to the finish line in New York — in the steam-powered car they built.

This evening’s Episode:HEAVY RAIN

Appare, Al, and Jing set off for the next stage but come upon a group of other competitors who have been attacked by men on horseback. The only survivor is Richard Reaseman, left alive by the men wearing snake tattoos to warn the others that everyone in the race will die. Surprisingly, Appare decides to go after them and Al and Jing agree. Hototo tracks the killers to an unfriendly small town, but after a short investigation, they find themselves surrounded by Gil’s armed men.

Dr Stone season 2 “Stone Wars”

Modern society is lost when a mysterious light leaves everyone petrified in stone. Thousands of years in the future, super genius Senku awakens and begins restoring civilization with his Kingdom of Science. Now as he sets down blueprints for a smartphone in the stone world, Tsukasa and his Empire of Might prepare for the upcoming war.

This evening’s Episode:Prison Break

Chrome is still imprisoned by the Empire of Might, and he has seen the booby-traps that Tsukasa’s men are preparing. He has to escape on his own before his friends blunder into this ambush. But can he do so from inside a prison with none of his tools? And how will he handle the new prison boss Tsukasa has put in charge?

preview item – UraSekai Picnic (aka Otherworld Picnic)

College student Sorawo Kamikoshi has been exploring the strange dream-like world she calls the Otherside ever since she stumbled upon it during her days as an urban explorer, but her most recent trip has gotten her into serious trouble. That’s when she meets Toriko Nishina, a strange young woman searching the Otherside for her missing friend. Toriko helps Sorawo out of her predicament, and Sorawo falls into helping Toriko in her mission. But each journey into the Otherside brings strange new dangers and skills, and Sorawo isn’t sure that the search is worth it.

This evening’s Episode: #5 “Wiggle-Waggle Hunting

College student Sorawo Kamikoshi is trapped in a bog pool in another world, afraid she’ll die alone, when another woman named Toriko Nishina stumbles across her and pulls her out. The two then encounter a monster called a “Wiggle-Waggle” that will supposedly turn them insane if they look at it for too long. Toriko throws some rock salt at the monster and it turns into a strange cube with reflective surfaces. Can they make this work for them?

Ascendance of a Bookworm (Honzuki no Gekokujou: Shisho ni Naru Tame niwa Shudan o Erandeiraremasen)

The story follows Motosu Urano, a book-loving post-secondary student and soon-to-be librarian who ends up crushed to death beneath a pile of books during an earthquake. With her dying breath, she wishes to be reincarnated in a world where she can read books forever. Urano awakens in the body of a weak, five-year-old girl named Myne in a world where books are scarce and only available to elites. Myne, retaining her memories from her previous life, decides to create and print her own books so that she can read again.

Tonight’s Episode:Lutz’s Myne

Myne and Lutz arrive at their new workshop, and as they begin to put things in order, Myne is relieved to see Lutz acting normal towards her. They delegate tasks between a lumberer to build tools and a craftsman to make the strainer, but after negotiating with them, Lutz again becomes suspicious of Myne’s identity. Then they venture out into the woods to extract tree fibers. While Lutz cuts down trees, Myne is suddenly attacked by a carnivorous weed known as a trombe, which will constantly grow and sprout even after it is cut down.

retro – Shoujo Kakuemi Utena (Revolutionary Girl Utena)

Utena Tenjou, a teenage girl who expresses her desire to be a prince through her strong-willed personality and tomboyish manner of dress. She finds herself drawn into a series of sword duels at Ohyori Academy, to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the “Rose Bride” who possesses the “power to revolutionize the world”.

Tonight’s Episode:Curried High Trip

A mishap in home economics causes Utena and Anthy to switch bodies. In the Rose Bride’s body, Utena fights off Anthy’s bullies and Saionji’s advances while Nanami goes on a long journey to find a cure.

Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland) season 2

Emma is an 11-year-old orphan living in Grace Field House, a small orphanage housing her and her 37 siblings. Life had never been better; with food that tasted gourmet, plush beds, snow-white uniforms, and the love of their “Mother” (the caretaker) Isabella, as well the litany of daily exams that Emma always aced with her two best friends Ray and Norman. The orphans are basically allowed to do whatever they want, except to venture out of the compounds or the gate that connects the house to the outside world. Then she finds out the truth. Determined to break out of Grace Field House, Norman and Emma partner up with Ray to peel away at the façade of the farm and find a way to escape with all their other siblings. But escape and freedom has its own dangers.

Tonight’s Episode:Episode 5

The hunt for the escaped children continues while rumors spread among the demons that the Farms are being attacked. The fifteen young escapees make their home in an abandoned temple and monitor the reports from the Farms on a stolen radio set. They barely survive by hunting and obtaining supplies from a local demon towns while disguised as demon children.

In/Spectre

When she was still just a girl, Kotoko was kidnapped by yokai. These spirits made her into a powerful intermediary between the spirit and human worlds, but this power came at a price: an eye and a leg. Now, years later, she watches out for dangerous yokai while developing feelings for a young man named Kuro, who is also special: an incident with a yokai has given him healing powers. He’s surprised when Kotoko asks him to team up to handle renegade yokai, preserving the thin line between reality and the supernatural.

Tonight’s Episode:She Who Spins Fiction

Saki remembers Kuro’s cousin Rikka having an unnatural aura, and overheard nurse’s mention that Rikka tried to kill herself multiple times. Kuro reveals Rikka is not dead, as she was also forced to consume yokai flesh and is unable to die. Kotoko wakes up from her nap and worries something drastic happened between Kuro and Saki as they are acting awkward. Kotoko suspects Rikka has been experimenting to see how powerful her ability to choose futures can be, and created Nanase.

Retro – Touhai Densetsu Akagi (Mahjong Legend Akagi)

After a death-defying game of chicken one evening in 1958, Akagi nonchalantly enters a yakuza mahjong parlor to shake the police’s trail. Although he is unfamiliar with the rules of mahjong, his gambling intuition saves a small-time gambler, Nangou, and grants him a seat at the gambling table. Thus begins Akagi’s legend among the Yakuaza as the best player and gambler of Mahjong.

Tonight’s Episode:The Will of the Demons

Washizu’s hand takes the form of 6 dora tiles. If he gets a self-drawn dealer baiman win, Akagi will die. Washizu finally gets to see Akagi’s face trembling in despair.

Vinland Saga

set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode:Reunion

In the year 1014, on instructions from King Selwyn, Canute takes his followers to York, a Danish occupied town in the Northumbria Region. As their boats row up the Ouse river, Canute is shot in the chest by a crossbow arrow fired by an assassin who is tracked down and killed by Thorfinn. Thorfinn is recognized by Leif Erikson from his village in Iceland and they are joyfully reunited.
