Screening on Saturday 21st November 2020

One week to go until JAFWA’s 30th Aniversary celebrations. Rejoice! There is so much stuff that some of it will spill over to the screening of December 12th.
This week, however, will be a normal, regular screening continue here at JAFWA. It is almost comparatively bland compared to what happens on the week of the 28th, but still good.

With the end of the year in sight, a couple of our beloved regular series come to an end this night.

Eizouken

JAFWA’s 30th Aniversary is quickly approaching, and a reminder that we may still have a limited number of tickets for an authentic Japanese Tea Ceremony on the day. Buy your $10 ticket early! as they are going fast. President Drew may still have some to sell this week.

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible second wave of Corona, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
Help would be welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19. Set Up begins ~4:45pm, while the Screening should begin at 5:15pm, or later should the set-up not yet be complete. Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. And we need to wipe the chairs down before they are stacked away.

Fruits Basket (2020) season 2

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when stressed or grasped by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode:See You Later” and “Ask Him For Me

Parent/Teacher meeting at school is turning out to be a disaster for Yuki (the Zodiac Rat), though Shigure (the Dog) acting as Tohru’s guardian provokes a frosty response. But what does the future hold for our favourite characters. Time for a somen party.
Uotani Arisa-cham still pines for her mysterious beau, Kureno (the Rooster). Can Tohru help out? But on the way Tohru is detoured to help repair the relationship bewtween Momiji (the Rabbit) and his younger sister Momo.

Eizoukan niwa Te o Dasu na! (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!)

Midori, Tsubame, and Sayaka are an energetic trio of first-year high school girls who come together in the Eizouken (Video Research Club) to turn their anime dreams into a reality. Midori is nervous to create an anime alone. She meets Tsubame who appears to be a well-to-do girl but she really has artistic dreams of being an animator. Midori’s best friend Sayaka has the financial sense to bring the project to fruition and joins the pair on their quest.

This evening’s Episode:Shibahama UFO Wars! ” Finale

After finding out their musician changed the main track at the last moment and no one checked, Mizusaki begins to panic. With time running out, Asakusa proposes changing the end of the anime to match the music track they have and keeping the dance party scene as a DVD extra.

Somali and the Forest Spirit (Somari to Mori no Kamisama)

The world is ruled by spirits, goblins, and all manner of strange creatures. Human beings are persecuted, to the very point of extinction. One day, a golem and a lone human girl meet. This is a record of the pair, one a member of a ruined race, the other a watchman of the forest. It tells of their travels together and of the bond between father and daughter.

This evening’s Episode:Those Who Protect and Those Who Threaten” and “Bonded Father and Child” Finale

As they wrap up their daily duties for the final time, Golem and Yabashira shop for supplies for their trip while Somali finishes her bracelet. That night, Somali presents Golem with her gift, and is happily surprised when he gifts her a similar bracelet he found in town. They all play in the snow before suddenly Golem sees a hunting party in the distance in search for humans. A surpise is in store for all as Golem expends his remaining life energy recklessly.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode:Smiles

Shinra again uses his Adolla Burst jump to light speed, causing his childhood memories to be shared with Sho. While initially rejecting memories from their youth, scenes with Shinra caring for him and their mother’s love overwhelm Sho, causing him to break down in tears. Shinra has taken too many injuries though. Can even a genius pyrokinetic doctor save him?

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode:Tsuguko, Kanao Tsuyuri

Tanjiro recruits the Kocho triplets to attack him with carpet beaters if he stops doing Total Concentration Breathing while he sleeps, which they do. Tanjiro recognizes that the longer he keeps his breathing up the great stamina boost he gets. He can now keep up with Kanao, and explode a small gourd with his breath. Zenitsu and Inosuke watch, realizing they’re being left behind. Now, to get his sword replaced.

Retro – Touhai Densetsu Akagi (Mahjong Legend Akagi)

After a death-defying game of chicken one evening in 1958, Akagi nonchalantly enters a yakuza mahjong parlor to shake the police’s trail. Although he is unfamiliar with the rules of mahjong, his gambling intuition saves a small-time gambler, Nangou, and grants him a seat at the gambling table. Thus begins Akagi’s legend among the Yakuaza as the best player and gambler of Mahjong.

Tonight’s Episode:The Witching Hour” and “The Mahjong Game of Destruction

Akagi agrees to follow Yasuoka and ?gi to track down the murderer to play mahjong with him. The murderer is revealed to be Washizu Iwao, a decorated police officer who accumulated wealth through consulting and blackmail who has begun killing people in games of mahjong. His mansion has some strange rules, and the wager is 2000cc of Akagi’s blood vs 20 million yen. Unfazed, Akagi asks to raise the stakes so that he would be able to witness Washizu’s destruction. Let the game between genius and monster begin!

Vinland Saga

set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode:Child of a Hero

In November 1013 AD, Floki reports to the King of Denmark that the Danish forces have defeated the English in Wessex, but he also has to report that Thorkell may have taken Canute. Meanwhile in Wales, Asser of Brycheiniog blocks Askeladd’s passage until Askeladd reveals that he has Welsh ancestry.
