Screening on Saturday 11^th July 2020

Tis the season of Winter, but never fear. For JAFWA returns this July with anime cheer!
The JAFWA screenings continue, with 4 new regular series starting this week.

Though first, JAFWA’s AGM and annual elections are coming up (next week). Once again we cry forth the offical announcement of the upcoming AGM and election, to be held on July 18^th, at 3PM before the JAFWA screening. So please prepare and present questions before-hand for our regularly scheduled July AGM, and consider nominating for the JAFWA elections. And, according to our President, you can nominate any fully signed up (for at least the last 3 months) adult JAFWA member resident in WA for nomination as a committee member – it is up to the nominated to “defend” themselves.
This week shall be the last one we can take nominations. The nominated need time to be informed and to prepare.

As you recall from last session, we have re-instated the retro item slot, which we will also continue this week, to see anime as it used to be (in this case 2005).

As for our new regular series, we will have “Somali and the Forest Spirit” and the second series of “Fruits Basket” near the beginning of the night. While “Vinland Saga” will be shown at the end of the night, as it may prove to be even more violent than “Mahjong Legend Akagi”.
As for the final item, the survey votes suggest it will be either “Darwin’s Game” (which we will show from episode #2, as #1 was shown just a few weeks ago) or “In/Spectre” (aka “Kyokou Suiri”) – the final decision has yet to be made. You may now shiver in anticipation.

We continue taking precautions to limit the possible second wave of Corona, and we ask that you co-operate and even help where possible with our efforts to keep you safe – some social distancing, extra cleaning with antiseptic, library under limited access, etc. Also, we must ask that anyone unfortunate enough to be infected to not attend JAFWA until they are contagion free.
Help would be welcome during set-up and pack-up due to the extra duties imposed by COVID-19. Set Up begins ~4:45pm, while the Screening should begin at 5:15pm, or later should the set-up not yet be complete. Please arrive early to confirm personal details due to COVID 19 regulations. And we need to wipe the chairs down before they are stacked away.

Fruits Basket (2020 season 2)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “Hello Again”

A recap of the first season to explain Tohru’s current circumstances and what has happened in the year since she started living with Shigure Sohma and the others. Yuki Sohma is still the beloved “prince” of the school, and thanks to Tohru he is ready to become student principal. Or so he thinks. For the “prince” has a few ardent admiriers who do not take well to how close Tohru is to Yuki.

Non Non Biyori

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “Spring Came Again”

As Spring arrives again, Hotaru and Komari go on a picnic together, where Hotaru ends up eating Komari’s botched up homemade lunch in order to not hurt her feelings. Later, the girls get together to search for some edible plants, eventually coming to a field of renge flowers where Natsumi makes a costume for Renge.

Dr Stone

Typical student Taiju Oki tells his science-loving friend Senku Ishigami that he will confess his feelings to their classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa. He prepares to make his confession to Yuzuriha under a camphor tree on the school grounds, but his attempt is interrupted when a bright light appears in the sky. Taiju pushes Yuzuriha to the tree to protect her as the light petrifies them along with the entire human population. After 3700 years spent trapped in stone, Senku and Taiju are somehow revived from their petrified state six months apart in what they now call the Stone World.

This evening’s Episode: “Buddies Back to Back”

Senku does nothing that deviates from his gaol saving the world by science. The silver spear made by Senku is revealed to be a sensor to detect poisonous gases coming from a pool of sulfuric acid, which they need for the antibiotic. Knowing the risks involved, Senku offers to teach Chrome everything he knows about science on the off-chance that he dies, but Chrome refuses, instead proposing a tag-team style approach.

omali and the Forest Spirit (Somari to Mori no Kamisama)

The world is ruled by spirits, goblins, and all manner of strange creatures. Human beings are persecuted, to the very point of extinction. One day, a golem and a lone human girl meet. This is a record of the pair, one a member of a ruined race, the other a watchman of the forest. It tells of their travels together and of the bond between father and daughter..

This evening’s Episode: “Journeying Parent and Child”

Golem, an ancient wandering forest protector, finds a young human girl named Somali bounded in chains while making his rounds through the woods. He takes her under his care and allows himself to be called her father. The pair travel from city to city, learning the history of their civilization. They find out a war between monsters and humanity caused the near extinction of the human race, while some of the survivors ended up as either slaves or food.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “Formation of Special Fire Force Company 8 – The Mightiest Hikeshi ”

Lieuenant Takehisa Hinawa tells Company 8 about its formation: How he was unable to kill his friend and fellow army officer Tojo who became an Infernal, how he met fire officer Akitaru Obi who had decided to form his own Special Fire Force company, and how later they recruited Maki. Now to investigate Company 7.

Sword Art Online: Alicization (series 3 part 2) “War of Underworld”

Kazuto has been recruited to assist in testing an experimental FullDive machine, Soul Translator (STL), which has an interface that is far more realistic and complex than the previous machine he had played to help develop an artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense (MOD) named A.L.I.C.E. He tests the STL by entering a virtual reality cyberspace created with The Seed package, named UnderWorld (UW). In the UW, the flow of time proceeds a thousand times faster than in the real world, and Kirito’s memories of what happens inside are restricted.

Tonight’s Episode: “Heartless Choice”

The morning after Stacia’s/Asuna’s arrival, the decoy force discovers that Vecta has ordered the army to traverse the massive ravine by crawling over 10 suspended ropes, and plans a counter-strategy. Meanwhile, in the Ocean Turtle, Critter successfully disables the fluctlight acceleration and deploys a patch program to invite AmuSphere users in America to a PvP slaughter VRMMO, tricking them into thinking that it was a “beta test”.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Tsuzumi Mansion”

Tanjiro rescues a maiden from fellow Demon Slayer Zenitsu, who is convinced that he will die on this mission. Tanjiro’s crow directs both boys to a mansion. Zenitsu’s hearing is as sharp as Tanjiro’s smell and he hears two scared kids who tell Tanjiro it is a demon’s house and the demon took their older brother inside.

Darwin’s Game (Daawinzu Geemu)

17-year old Kaname Sudou accepts an online invitation by a friend to play an app game called Darwin’s Game, unbeknownst to him that it involves a fight between life and death. Those who play the game are given a Sigil, an ability that varies from player to player. Trapped in this game of relentless murder and conquest, Kaname determines to clear the game, and seek out and kill the Game Master.

Tonight’s Episode: “Gemstone Mine ”

Shuka decides that she wants to join a clan started up by Kaname, while also telling him that points earned in the game can be redeemed for cash, as well as to temporarily hide his name from the challenge list as he has gained attention for winning two matches against high-ranked players solo as a rookie, which is unheard of. Later they meet up in Shibuya for a date with the main purpose being to scout the area for the upcoming treasure hunt event.

Retro – Touhai Densetsu Akagi (Mahjong Legend Akagi)

After a death-defying game of chicken one evening in 1958, Akagi nonchalantly enters a yakuza mahjong parlor to shake the police’s trail. Although he is unfamiliar with the rules of mahjong, his gambling intuition saves a small-time gambler, Nangou, and grants him a seat at the gambling table. Thus begins Akagi’s legend among the Yakuaza as the best player and gambler of Mahjong.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Awakening of Talent”

Akagi shows an amazing ability for someone who has never played mahjong before, predicting the opponents’ tiles by looking at their discards in order to not discard tiles useful for anyone’s hand. Seeing the possibility that they may lose to Akagi, Ryuuzaki, the yakuza leader, calls the clan’s best player, Yagi Keiji. More will go on stake.

Vinland Saga

set in Dane-controlled England at the start of the 11th century, and features the Danish invaders of England commonly known as Vikings. The story combines a dramatisation of King Cnut the Great’s historical rise to power with a revenge plot centered on the historical explorer Thorfinn, the son of a murdered ex-warrior.

Tonight’s Episode: “Somewhere Not Here ”

In viking battle, the warrior Thors abandons his men. Years later, Thorfinn, the son of Thors is a young boy living in Iceland. He longs for adventure and is eager to know more about the world. Thorfinn dreams of a land of paradise called Vinland that he hears about from the great adventurer Leif Erickson. Thorfinn leads a peaceful life with this father Thors, his sister Ylva and his wife Helga. One day, Thors saves a runaway slave.
