No Screening in April 2020

President Drew’s Announcement on the hiatus of JAFWA

please read it here.

No Screening on this week or for the forseeable future.

JAFWA is still on Hiatus until the current pestilence passes.
Never fear, JAFWA shall return with the panacea of anime goodness, when good order is restored. When the situation allows for JAFWA to resume, our expected screening can be seen here.

And so long as Madman keeps operating, we will keep ordering stuff for you from their online catalogue with our club discount. Just e-mail us your orders, and we will respond with how to direct transfer the deposits and options for delivery.

Artists are bringing back Amabie, a ‘youkai’ associated with protection from disease.

In the weeks to come we will be implementing various challenges and FaceBook polls, so keep tuned. Do you have any suggestions what to Poll?

Does anyone have a haiku to express the current situation? If so, please share it on FaceBook with us, or email it to JAFWA Members here.

Haiku is a short form of Japanese poetry in three phrases, typically characterised by three qualities:

  • The essence of haiku is “cutting” (kiru). This is often represented by the juxtaposition of two images or ideas and a kireji (“cutting word”) between them, a kind of verbal punctuation mark which signals the moment of separation and colours the manner in which the juxtaposed elements are related.
  • Traditional haiku often consist of 17 on (also known as morae though often loosely translated as “syllables”), in three phrases of 5, 7, and 5 on, respectively.
  • A kigo (seasonal reference), usually drawn from a saijiki, an extensive but defined list of such terms.

The latest Japanese Spring 2020 season of anime is underway in Japan. Do any of these or these titles look like they are worth previewing at JAFWA when we return?
