Welcome back to JAFWA for a New Year. Or as the Japanese greet each other at the beginning of a year “akemashite omedetou gozaimasu”.
We have assembled a program based on the surveys our dear JAFWAites filled in last year, and we hope that you will enjoy the items we have selected.

Fruits Basket (2019 remake)

After a family tragedy turns her life upside down, plucky high schooler Tohru Honda takes matters into her own hands and moves out into a tent. Unfortunately for her, she pitches her new home on private land belonging to the mysterious Sohma clan, and it isn’t long before the owners discover her secret. But, as Tohru quickly finds out when the family offers to take her in, the Sohmas have a secret of their own–when touched by the opposite sex, they turn into the animals of the Chinese Zodiac.

This evening’s Episode: “How Have You Been, My Brother?”

A few days after Tohru meeting Akito, Yuki’s older brother Ayame Sohma, the Snake of the zodiac, visits the house, much to Yuki’s displeasure. Ayame takes an instant liking to Tohru and rushes her to a gyoza restaurant for lunch. What is the two brothers’ relationship, coming from the dysfunctional Sohma household.

Non Non Biyori

In the countryside small town village of Asahigaoka, a place lacking many of the conveniences that people from the city are accustomed to. The nearest stores are a few miles away and one of the local schools consists of only five students, each of whom is in a different grade of elementary or middle school. Hotaru Ichijo, a fifth grader from Tokyo, transfers into Asahigaoka Branch School and has to adjust to countryside life with her new friends.

This evening’s Episode: “A New Transfer Student Came”

In the countryside village of Asahigaoka, a fifth grade elementary school girl named Hotaru Ichijou moves in from the city and transfers into the village’s branch school, which consists of only four other students; a first grader named Renge Miyauchi and three middle school siblings, Natsumi, Komari and Suguru Koshigaya, along with their teacher, Renge’s older sister Kazuho. Can Hotarou fit in?

Dr Stone

Typical student Taiju Oki tells his science-loving friend Senku Ishigami that he will confess his feelings to their classmate Yuzuriha Ogawa. He prepares to make his confession to Yuzuriha under a camphor tree on the school grounds, but his attempt is interrupted when a bright light appears in the sky. Taiju pushes Yuzuriha to the tree to protect her as the light petrifies them along with the entire human population. After 3700 years spent trapped in stone, Senku and Taiju are somehow revived from their petrified state six months apart in what they now call the Stone World.

This evening’s Episode: “Stone World”

After five years of infatuation, Taiju Oki is about to confess to his love to fellow student Yuzuriha Ogawa. Suddenly a mysterious green light turns every human on the planet into stone and 3,700 years later, nature has taken over. Taiju manages to break free from his imprisonment. After finding the tree that Yuzuriha’s petrified state is in, he soon meets up with his genius friend Senku Ishigami, who had awoken six months earlier. As the only two humans freed from stone, Senku seeks to rebuild civilization in this “stone world” using his knowledge of science and Taiju’s brawn.

Mob Psycho 100 season 2

Shigeo Kageyama’s nickname is “Mob”. A slang term for a background character, someone who doesn’t stand out. In truth he is an incredibly powerful psychic who has suppressed his emotions in order to avoid causing a catastrophe. Mob would like nothing better than to live a normal life and have feelings just like anyone else, but with his incredible psychic powers there’s no telling what might happen if he did.

Tonight’s Episode: “Ripped Apart ~Someone Is Watching~ ”

Continuing on from last season, Reigen accepts an exorcism job from a farmer and quickly deduces that there was some spirit involved, Reigen summons Mob, who exorcises the high level spirit Wriggle Wriggle by controlling plants using his psychic powers. Meanwhile, Kamuro Shinji resigns from his post as student council president for framing his fellow students. Mezato jumps on the chance to help Mob develop and become the leader of the Psycho Helmet Club and trains Mob to run for president.

Fire Force (En’en no Shouboutai, literally “Blazing Firefighting Corps”)

In the year 198 of the Age of the Sun, Tokyo is a crowded cosmopolis. But the world’s most populous city is threatened by devils that cause people to burst into flame at random. The only ones who can stop it are the Pyrofighters, a team of specialized firefighters. The young Shinra, blessed with the ability to ignite his feet and travel at the speed of a rocket, wants nothing more than to be a hero, and knows that this is the place for him. But he’s not the best at following orders.

Tonight’s Episode: “Shinra Kusakabe Enlists ”

Shinra Kusakabe, a youth dubbed “Devil’s Footprints” due to his power to ignite his feet at will, joins Special Fire Force Company 8, a specialized fire brigade of pyrokinetics which destroys Infernals, sympathetically described as putting their human souls to rest. Shinra is quickly dispatched on his first mission to save the wife of a factory owner that has become an Infernal. But Shinra still has to deal with accidentally burning down his house and killing his family with his powers as a child, causing him to be feared and neglected.

Sword Art Online: Alicization (series 3 part 2) “War of Underworld”

Kazuto has been recruited to assist in testing an experimental FullDive machine, Soul Translator (STL), which has an interface that is far more realistic and complex than the previous machine he had played to help develop an artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense (MOD) named A.L.I.C.E. He tests the STL by entering a virtual reality cyberspace created with The Seed package, named UnderWorld (UW). In the UW, the flow of time proceeds a thousand times faster than in the real world, and Kirito’s memories of what happens inside are restricted.

Tonight’s Episode: “In the Far North”

A few months have passed since the fall of Administrator. After the events of the first season, the energy surge in the Ocean Turtle has damaged Kirito’s Fluctlight, causing him to become catatonic, barely reacting to outside stimuli. Fearing for Kirito’s safety and life, as he is known to be one of the individuals who defeated Administrator, Alice has taken him back to Rulid Village by riding Amayori, her dragon companion.

Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba)

Tanjiro Kamado is a kindhearted and intelligent boy who lives with his family, making money by selling charcoal. Everything changes when his family is attacked and slaughtered by demons (oni). Tanjiro and his sister Nezuko are the sole survivors of the incident. Nezuko has now become a demon, but still surprisingly shows signs of human emotion and thought. Tanjiro becomes a demon slayer to help his sister turn human again and to prevent the same tragedy that happened to him and his sister, from happening to others.

Tonight’s Episode: “Cruelty ”

Tanjiro Kamado is the oldest son of a family of seven that lives on the mountain. Apart from selling coal, he also uses his keen sense of smell and strength to help others. One night, he is on his way back home when Saboru, an old man that lives halfway up the mountain, invites Tanjiro to spend the night with him, warning that man-eating demons roam the forest at night. When Tanjiro returns home the following morning, he finds his entire family slaughtered, except for his bloodied younger sister Nezuko.

Cop Craft

15 years ago, an unknown hyperspace gate opened over the Pacific. Beyond this gate lies Reto Semaani, a strange alternate world where fairies and demons live. San Teresa City — a city where over two million immigrants live from both worlds. As a result, there are the haves and the have-nots. Here is the world’s newest “city of dreams.” But in the shadow of the chaos, crime is rampant: drugs, prostitution, and weapon trafficking. The detectives who stand up to these heinous crimes are in the San Teresa City Police. When the detective Kei Matoba and the alternate-world knight Tirana — two individuals who differ in gender, personality, and even world of origin — meet, an incident erupts.

This evening’s Episode: “Cop Show, Witch Craft”

While performing what appears to be a routine drug bust on a couple of criminals in San-Teresa looking to trade a kidnapped fairy, one of the suspects breaks free and kills Kei Matoba’s partner. This results in a diplomatic problem, and Kei is ordered to partner with Semanian noble Tilarna Exedilica, who proclaims herself a Knight of Mirvor. And has no clue about Earth ways and its technology.

Psycho-Pass season 3

In a future Japan where the psychological profiling system Sybil determines your place in society, or your removal for the good of society, now veteran Inspector Akane Tsunemori has been arrested by Public Security, for putting the public in danger. The unfolding story and the truth Tsunemori seeks involves two new investigators: Arato Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov.

This evening’s Episode: “Laelaps’ Calling”

A transport drone crashes into a harbor and the passengers, most of whom are immigrants, are detained on the wharf. The Public Safety Bureau assigns newly-appointed agents, Arata Shindo and Kei Mikhail Ignatov, to investigate the crash, along with Enforcers.
