Event Afternoon before JAFWA Screening

JAFWA has the hall from about 1PM to 4:30PM, where it is make our own amusement time.

Does anybody have their own game machine and games they want their fellow JAFWAites to play? JAFWA will bring out the projector and screen if needed. I am not certain we have access to the outdoor area, but we will try to keep you off the street.
In the past people have brought along video games and the hardware to play them, and sewing machines for cosplay creating. What do you want to do? Just so long as it fun, legal, ethical, and we don’t scuff the floor of the Hall. And a personal note from the MC, he wishes you to believe that he is allergic to nerf bullets.

Weathering With You

This week we will have our monthly member’s prize draw, after we have our monthly survey of the various shows we have screened recently. This week 3 of our regular series are ending, so we need to do this survey to help decide which 3 new regular series we will be starting in September. So vote well in the survey, using an ordinal scale from 1 for most favourite, 2 for second favourite, and so on up to 20, if you have opinions on all twenty titles. Unfortunately I can’t say “vote often”.

I have been holding it in as long as possible, but we have a movie screening this week! It is the absolutely delightful Studio Ghibli movie “Mimi o Sumaseba” (which literally translates as “If you listen carefully”), also known by its offical English title of “Whisper of the Heart”.

A reminder that JAFWA member Dale is offering to do a bulk import order of Japanese calendars, in order to reduce shipping costs. The very first 2020 calendars are starting to be listed, as seen here or here, with more to come as the publishing companies confirm their schedules. Is anyone interested in ordering Japanese calendars via Dale?

On December 14th we will have our end of year marathon screening, and your Suggestions are welcome. The JAFWA committee has already scheduled room for “Akira”, and we have received a request for the movie “Millenium Actress”. Any other requests/suggestions?
Be aware, we also intend to run an auction for our members. Tell us what you want us to auction of yours, preferably well in advance, so we can schedule enough time into the program, as well as inform people so that they can bring plenty of money to bid.

Long ago, a dying woman summons a demon to avenge her and her partner and the demon agrees to her request, deciding it would be an amusing distraction.

A flashback from Shizu’s memory: Shizu is summoned to the Kingdom of Filtwood with other adventurers to stop a demon from retaking its remains under the castle and reviving. Upon hearing that the Silver Wings, a pair of famous adventurers, were killed by the nameless demon, some of the adventurers try to withdraw.

One Punch Man season 2

An increase in villain activity has the Hero Organization worried that the “Earthdoom prophecy” will soon come to pass. In an effort to alleviate the overworked heroes, they turn to villains themselves for help. The decision looks ill-advised as at least one villain is more interested in helping the prophecy along than preventing it. Meanwhile, the invincible Saitama is still bored, trying to find a decent challenge.

This evening’s Episode: “Cleaning Up the Disciple’s Mess ” Finale

The wounded ‘Hero Hunter’ faces his master Bang in battle, as Bang’s brother and Genos hold off the invading monsters and protect the fallen A-class heroes. Byt the monster Phoenix-Man wants to rescue Garou for the Monster Association, and calls upon the unstoppable Elder Centipede. But all is not lost when the strongest hero of all arrives on the scene.

movie – Whisper of the Heart (Mimi o Sumeseba)

This brilliant Studio Ghibl movie from 1995, directed by Yoshifumi Kondou, follows the story of Shizuku Tsukishima is a 14-year-old student at Mukaihara Junior High School, where she is best friends with Yuko Harada. Living in Tokyo with her parents Asako and Seiya, as well as her older sister Shiho, Shizuku is a bookworm and is keen on writing. During an ordinary evening, she looks through the checkout cards in her library books. She discovers they all have been checked out by Seiji Amasawa. Over the next few days, Shizuku encounters a young man, later revealed to be Seiji, who often annoys her. Then finding a cat riding a train, Shizuku follows it to discover an antique shop run by Shiro Nishi. In the shop is a cat statuette nicknamed “The Baron”. And this too leads to Seiji. Discovering Seiji’s resolve, Shizuka sees the aimlessness in her life and seeks to resolve it. Merely translating John Denver’s song “Country Road” into Japanese is insufficient.

Dororo

From Osamu Tezuka’s beloved manga. During the 1470s after the Wars of Onin and Bunmei in the Noto Peninsula of the Hokuriku District, Hyakkimaru, who lacks as much as 48 body parts, obtains a fake body and eliminates 48 monsters that were made from his body to retrieve his missing body parts, and regain his humanity.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Story of Banmon, Part 2 ”

Kagemitsu Daigo and his troops have cornered the ignorant Hyakkimaru, who ony sees the demonic red in Daigo’s soul, and must flee the archers. Meanwhile, Dororo and Sukeroku are held in an Asakura prison with other Daigo prisoners. In the Kagemitsu compound, Tahoumaru confronts Nuinokata about his brother’s fate, and is horrified to learn of Daigo’s bargain with the demons.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 3 part 2

Eren and his companions in the 104th are assigned to the newly-formed Levi Squad, whose assignment is to keep Eren and Historia safe given Eren’s newly-discovered power and Historia’s knowledge and pedigree. Levi and Erwin have good reason to be concerned, because the priest of the Church that Hange had hidden away was found tortured to death, making it clear that the Military Police are involved with the cover-up. Things get more harrowing when the MPs make a move on Erwin and the Levi Squad narrowly avoids capture.

Tonight’s Episode: “Thunder Spears ”

Ambushed in Shiganshina District by more than just Armoured and Beast Titans, and their horde of allies, the Scouts prepare to battle for their lives. First prevent the Titans from killing the gorses, without which the Scouts cannot escape. While the Titans have a strong stategy, the Scouts have a few things in reserve that the Titans may not expect.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Ougen no Kaze (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Golden Wind)

Set in 2001, two years after the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi Hirose is sent to Italy and tasked by Jotaro Kujo to search for Giorno Giovanna, an aspiring mafia gangster who is a son of Dio Brando. But as Dio possessed the body of Jonathan Joestar at time of his conception, Giorno is technically a Joestar and takes more after them than the father he never knew. The series follows Giorno as he joins the mafia organization Passione, moving up through its ranks with the intention of becoming its boss to improve life in Italy.

Tonight’s Episode: “King Crimson vs. Metallica ”

Through Doppio’s imaginary phone, the boss tells Doppio to use Epitaph to predict Risotto’s movements. With Epitaph’s (the final member of the Hitmen) power, Doppio sees a vision of a pair of scissors piercing out of his throat. Unable to avoid this from happening, Doppio quickly clasps his throat and removes the scissors. He deduces Risotto’s ability to transform the iron in his body into metallic objects, as well as the ability for Risotto to cloak his own visibility. The survivor will have to deal with Bucciarati’s group.
