Below is the program for the evening of Saturday July 27th, 2019.

Thank you for all attending the AGM, and sticking around for the non-election during the Dinner Break. We needed more people to nominate.
We are still so saddened by the arson attack on the Kyoto Animation studio last week. This is the sort of thing that causes us to change the JAFWA program at the last moment, so I hope nobody minded us replacing the early evening preview slot with “Baja no Studio”.

This will also be our end of month screening, which means we will have a monthly survey to see what has been approved by our dear JAFWAites, along with our monthly Member’s Prize draw.

SBS World Movies continues it Ghibli marathon over each weekend in July, though it is dubbed into English.

What is your favourite episode of “Mobile Police Patlabor”? Saturday August 10th has been declared Patlabor Day, so we should commemerate. But we only have room in the JAFWA program for a single episode. Which one shall it be?

Doukyonin wa Hiza, Tokidoki, Atama no Ue (My Housemate Is on My Lap, But Sometimes, on My Head)

Subaru, a 23-year-old introverted mystery writer, who adopts the cat Haru by chance. While he initially remains distant, they gradually bond with each other. Haru and Subaru rarely understand each other, but their misunderstandings lead to a common goal.

This evening’s Episode: “Because You’re Here ”

Subaru has writer’s block, he falls asleep and recalls his childhood. Hiroto’s family moved in next door while he was young, and he would always keep read a book at every opportunity. While in college, he won the grand prize in a mystery novel writing contest that got his career off the ground. That night, Subaru wakes up and finds the kitchen to be a mess after Hiroto nearly stepped on Haru’s tail by accident. Hiroto returns a book he borrowed from his high school days, and Subaru later collapses having come down with a cold. There is no empty feeling in the house.

Tensei Shitara Slime Datta Ken (That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime)

Living alone and never having had a girlfriend, 37-year-old Satoru Mikami is dissatisfied with how his life has turned out. But after dying at the hands of a robber, he awakens to a fresh start in a new world…as the lowest of the low – a slime monster.

This evening’s Episode: “Yuuki Kagurazaka ”

The city celebrates its victory over Charybdis with filleted Megalodon. That night, Rimuru has a dream about Shizu’s regret over not being able to help her students, five children brought to this world. Rimuru goes to the Kingdom of Ingrassia with Ranga to see them. There, he meets Yuuki Kagurazaka, the Grandmaster in charge of the children.

One Punch Man season 2

An increase in villain activity has the Hero Organization worried that the “Earthdoom prophecy” will soon come to pass. In an effort to alleviate the overworked heroes, they turn to villains themselves for help. The decision looks ill-advised as at least one villain is more interested in helping the prophecy along than preventing it. Meanwhile, the invincible Saitama is still bored, trying to find a decent challenge.

This evening’s Episode: “The Resistance of the Strong ”

Suiryu is handed his trophy (due to Saitama being disqualified and running away), when suddenly the monster Gouketsu (the one who attacked Genos) and his monsters arrive, knocking out Lightning Max and Snek. Gouketsu gives the monster cells to some of the martial artists, where Choze and others became monsters. Meanwhile, Mumen Rider and Tank Top Master are defending the hospital that Charanko is in.

Sword Art Online: Alicization

Kazuto has been recruited to assist in testing an experimental FullDive machine, Soul Translator (STL), which has an interface that is far more realistic and complex than the previous machine he had played to help develop an artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense (MOD) named A.L.I.C.E. He tests the STL by entering a virtual reality cyberspace created with The Seed package, named UnderWorld (UW). In the UW, the flow of time proceeds a thousand times faster than in the real world, and Kirito’s memories of what happens inside are restricted.

Tonight’s Episode: “My Hero ” Finale

With Eugeo dying and Alice unconscious, Kirito fights against Administrator alone. She shocks him by using SAO Sword Skills, stating there is nothing about the system she does not know. Meanwhile, in the real world, the Ocean Turtle facility is under attack.

Rising of the Shield Hero (Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari)

Naofumi Iwatani was summoned into a parallel world along with three other people to become the world’s Heroes. Each of the heroes were respectively equipped with their own legendary equipment when summoned. Naofumi happened to receive the Legendary Shield, the sole defensive equipment, while the others received weapons capable of attacking. Unlike the other heroes who are fully supported by the kingdom and gain several strong allies each, Naofumi’s luck turns to the worse, shunned by everyone from the King to peasants, Naofumi is forced to train as a hero alone while working to make ends meet acquiring only the most pitiful of followers. As he little by little gain the trust and gratitude of the people with their heroic actions, Naofumi and his companions work hard to fulfill their mission as saviors of the world, while unraveling its deepest secrets.

Tonight’s Episode: “Catastrophe Returns ”

Equipping Raphtalia and Filo and annexing the Lute Party with Knight Ake as their unit captain, the Wave starts and Ake’s Unit help civilians as Naofumi’s party kills monsters. After a while, Naofumi worries about the other heroes’ progress, so he leaves Ake’s party to protect the civilians. Finding the other Hero parties haphazardly attacking a Dutchman, Naofumi chastises their inattention, having Raphtalia expose the hidden Boss: a massive Soul Eater.

Yakusoku no Neverland (The Promised Neverland)

Emma is an 11-year-old orphan living in Grace Field House, a small orphanage housing her and her 37 siblings. Life had never been better; with food that tasted gourmet, plush beds, snow-white uniforms, and the love of their “Mother” (the caretaker) Isabella, as well the litany of daily exams that Emma always aced with her two best friends Ray and Norman. The orphans are basically allowed to do whatever they want, except to venture out of the compounds or the gate that connects the house to the outside world. Then she finds out the truth. Determined to break out of Grace Field House, Norman and Emma partner up with Ray to peel away at the façade of the farm and find a way to escape with all their other siblings.

Tonight’s Episode: “301045 ”

Norman’s trap exposes Ray as Isabella’s spy and Ray explains that he did so voluntarily to gain information which he could use to escape. Following a lengthy discussion about loyalty, Ray eventually agrees to side with Norman on a condition that Emma will not accept.

Overlord season 3

With his foundations now set in this new world, the first steps of Ains Ooal Gown’s master plan apparent begin to come to fruition. The value of Carne village and especially the political value of his alter ego Momon are reaffirmed; the “hidden” genius of his actions is continuously met with shock and awe by Demiurge, Albedo, the rest of his guardians, and even Ains himself at his “great wisdom.” His attempts to act in a way befitting the ruler of Nazarick, continuing to further cement his guardian’s loyalty, push him ever further down the path of not-so-intentional world domination. Without human conscience due to being undead, he is motivated only to continue searching for other players from Yggdrasil and to gain power to better protect the children and home of him and his forty former companions. Lord Ains Ooal Gown maintains his mantle of Overlord and leads the Great Tomb of Nazarick unto the world stage, directly into a vicious power struggle between two great empires.

Tonight’s Episode: “Preparation for War ”

Ainz establishes the Sorcerous Kingdom of Nazarick, and demands that the Re-Estize Kingdom withdraw from all lands around E-Rantel, claiming they belong to the Sorcerous Kingdom, and the Baharuth Empire backs them. Gazef requests the king to do as Ainz asks, claiming fighting Ainz would be a terrible idea, but the King refuses as doing so would be a sign of weakness and he cannot afford to show weakness when the Royal Faction in Re-Estize has begun to grow in strength after the Jaldabaoth Incident.

Dororo

From Osamu Tezuka’s beloved manga. During the 1470s after the Wars of Onin and Bunmei in the Noto Peninsula of the Hokuriku District, Hyakkimaru, who lacks as much as 48 body parts, obtains a fake body and eliminates 48 monsters that were made from his body to retrieve his missing body parts, and regain his humanity.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Story of the Merciless ”

Dororo falls ill with fever, and Hyakkimaru takes him to a temple for treatment. Delirious, Dororo sees some blood-red red spider lily flowers and it triggers memories of the past with his foster mother, Ojiya, and his foster father, Hibukuro.

Attack On Titan (Shingeki ni Kyojin) season 3

Eren and his companions in the 104th are assigned to the newly-formed Levi Squad, whose assignment is to keep Eren and Historia safe given Eren’s newly-discovered power and Historia’s knowledge and pedigree. Levi and Erwin have good reason to be concerned, because the priest of the Church that Hange had hidden away was found tortured to death, making it clear that the Military Police are involved with the cover-up. Things get more harrowing when the MPs make a move on Erwin and the Levi Squad narrowly avoids capture.

Tonight’s Episode: “Friends ”

As he lays dying, Kenny Ackerman recalls his past: his capture many years earlier by Uri Reiss in his Titan form; pledging loyalty to the family after Uri begged his forgiveness for the Ackerman family’s persecution; bringing up his dead sister Kuchel’s son Levi and teaching him the ways of a killer. Elsewhere the Beast Titan defeats Reiner and tells him and Bertholdt to regain the Coordinate.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Ougen no Kaze (Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure – Golden Wind)

Set in 2001, two years after the events of Diamond is Unbreakable, Koichi Hirose is sent to Italy and tasked by Jotaro Kujo to search for Giorno Giovanna, an aspiring mafia gangster who is a son of Dio Brando. But as Dio possessed the body of Jonathan Joestar at time of his conception, Giorno is technically a Joestar and takes more after them than the father he never knew. The series follows Giorno as he joins the mafia organization Passione, moving up through its ranks with the intention of becoming its boss to improve life in Italy.

Tonight’s Episode: “Clash and Talking Head ”

Squalo uses Clash to teleport Giorno to various water sources, making it difficult for Narancia to keep up. Giorno allows Narancia to shoot him with Aerosmith so the gun residue can make it easier to track Clash, allowing Narancia to wound Squalo. Squalo and Tiziano get the upper hand by leading the rest of Bucciarati’s crew into a kitchen with a gas leak and forcing Narancia to tell Mista to shoot Sex Pistols, causing an explosion.
