JAFWA Quiz from December 16, 2017

The 2017 JAFWA Marathon quiz – a breakdown of results. We haven’t published whom got what results, rather an overview of the answers. Your quiz sheets can be reclaimed at the next JAFWA (January 13th) if you are curious.

Section 1 – General Knowledge

  1. Robby the Robot recently sold for US$7,500,000.
  2. Potential 2020 Olympic Games competitions may or may not include: running with a piece of toast in mouth whilst late for school, both real-life Mario Kart and Mario-kart as an e-sport, Cosplay Chess, Competitive Anime Watching, Go, and e-sports.
  3. Why is the Dead Sea called the Dead Sea? Too much salt. Everyone knew the answer to this – well done.
  4. Your beloved MC (Dale) has long wished that Studio Ghibli would make a film adaption of “The Nargun and the Stars” by Patrica Wrightson. Should be available at your local library, if you didn’t read it at school.
  5. A camel can drink up to 80L of water at a time. An astute JAFWAite pointed out the flaw – camels don’t use cups.
  6. Fat is stored in a camel’s hump. It’s kept in a specific location to avoid overheating.
  7. What colour is the most commonly occurring on the flags of the world? Red
  8. In a standard deck of cards, the King of Hearts has no moustache, representing purity (as opposed to wealth, war and death for diamonds, clubs and spades respectively).
  9. Koala was nominated with a clear margin as the cutest and most photogenic animal, the humble Selfie-rat Quokka came in second.
  10. The above questions were prepared somewhat well in advance by the JAFWA committee. No-one believed this, including accusations of theft and the recording of presidential hallucinations by the secretary (which isn’t true, we use a Dictaphone to filter out the screams).

Section 2 – Japanese Knowledge

  1. “Good Evening” is pronounced Kom-ban-wa, “Good Day” is pronounced Kon-ni-chi-wa. Well done to all.
  2. What day of the year does the confectionary company Gleico promote as “Pocky Day”? November 11, because 11/11 looks like sticks of Pocky.
  3. Golden Week includes Showa Day, Constitutional Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day, taking place from April 29 to May 5.
  4. March is Sakura-viewing time.
  5. Sailor suits for school girls and ensign uniforms for school boys replaced kimonos in acknowledgement of the Japanese Navy’s utterly overwhelming victory off what they know as Tsushima Island… in 1905.
  6. Imperial Russia were so thoroughly beaten that we cannot declare them runners-up. Final Score: Japan sunk all 11 Russian Battleships, 8 cruisers and 6 destroyers, 4380 killed, 5917 captured (including 2 Admirals), 1862 interned; Russia sunk 3 torpedo boats, killed 117, 500 wounded.

  1. What is your favourite anime that JAFWA screened in 2017, and why? “Grimoire of Zero”, “Re:Creators”, and “Erased” were all honourable mentions, with “Little Witch Academia” being the popular choice.
  2. Not many people borrowed from the JAFWA loaner library in the last year – it’s free, and has a very large range of titles (we cannot bring them all in at once, but there is a list with Kris the Librarian, who can bring in any title you request for the next week).

Section 5 – The Multimedia round

  1. B – The Kind-hearted Child of Science did not slice the legs off a fellow combatant.
  2. Possible answers include any of the Retro-item shows, or follow-up seasons of popular shows such as “Jojo’s”, “Assassination Classroom”, “Log Horizon”, “Sword Art Online” and “Working”.
  3. D – Ido and Maya combine the working parts of their two I-machines into one and use their damaged mining rig to surf an explosion off the planet in episode 2.
  4. Atom loses its right eye.
  5. C, B, D, A. In episode six of Lupin III – The Italian Adventures, Elena gives Zenigata her sob story about being hounded forever over a fortune that doesn’t exist, the detective fakes some injuries and tries to lie to the assembled press and convince them Lupin has already escaped with the money. Lupin then shows up in police uniform and leads the press and police away just before Zenigata gets caught out in his lie. Then once everyone leaves Elena then goes to check on the fortune that actually does exist and finds Lupin doubled back and she has now led him right to her giant pillar of gold bars. At which point Zenigata reveals that he also hung around by leaping in front of Elena to protect her from the advancing crooks. Lupin decides to let Zenigata have this victory and covers the gang’s escape with a smoke bomb.
  6. Souta has to hide Poco’s true identity from other people… 6 times.
  7. Aqua is most often seen creating water.
  8. Who is the first witch that Atsuko sees? Shiny Chariot, also known as Professor Ursula, when she is still a child and attends one of her concerts long before coming to the academy. Yes, this was a trick question. It asked who the first witch Atsuko sees was, not who was the first witch she sees on her way to Luna Nova Magical Academy, the video clip was meant to mislead you.
  9. Captain Heinrich Seeleman and Sarah Gold argue over shrimp and minced meat in sandwiches, whilst Admiral Flugel and Artorius discuss curry over pork cutlet. The REAL answer is… Pork Cutlet Curry Sandwiches.
  10. Bubblegum Crisis was a popular answer, and set in the year 2032. It is worth noting that Macross the First was released around 2008, a manga re-telling of the original story but updated to include known technological changes, such as mobile phones.
  11. D – Souta’s old high-school friend Shinobu Nakajima does not appear in episode 8 of “Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari”.
  12. Acceptable answers would have included but weren’t limited to: 18if, Restaurant to Another World, JJBA (Iggy), Kobayashi-san’s Dragon Maid, Little Witch Academia, Re:Zero (Puck), Pocco’s Udon World for the titular character, and Yokai Apartment.
  13. In Re:Creators, anime heroine Selesia Upitiria and ordinary human Souta Mizushino have their first encounter with the mysterious girl in military uniform – Altair – with the following events in order: D, A, C, B. Selesia borrows the car, and after getting the hang of driving she guesses at the button on the dashboard that must activate the vehicle’s “weapon”. Then Altair attacks them from above with a hail of swords before appearing on the road in front of them, prompting Selesia to send the car ramming into her as she and Souta leap out before it hits Altair’s wall of swords, crashes and flips. Selesia and Altair then take to the skies to duel, and Souta is left on the ground where he notices their airborne battle is appearing on news feeds. Finally, the fight ends when Meteora appears and starts firing rockets at Altair.
  14. Jojo’s Bizzare Adventure Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency had ‘Roundabout’ by 80’s Prog-rock group Yes as it’s ending theme. A good decision.
