Annual General Meeting and Elections

Come one, come all signed up JAFWA members, to the JAFWA Hall at 3PM this Saturday, for the Annual General Meeting.
Listen to reports from the President, Secretary and Treasurer. Interrogate your overlords, and enter into debate about the course of JAFWA.

Certain topics have been suggested that can be raised at the AGM:

• Suggestion from Lindsay: Rollover and jackpot the Member’s Prize if not won in the first draw.
• Bookings for 2018: Ask the membership if JAFWA should screen on any of the convention weekends (Supanova, Comicon, Madfest, etc). This includes the Easter weekend (31st March).
• Suggestion from Katie: The screenings on the nights that clash with conventions to become special screenings. A sort of after party that might draw in convention attendees (free entry for people in cosplay, start later to give people from the conventions time to get there, special programme rather than regular items).
• Ask the membership what date we start next year (book the 13th January, and change it if the membership wants to start later).
• Consider asking the membership whether the survey is worthwhile or perhaps too complicated. But if it is going to be changed, we need to have an alternative to offer them.
• Suggestion from Katie: Make the survey electronic. Also post results online (or at least faster).

Then, after the normal JAFWA screening begins, we hope to vote for the replacement JAFWA committee. There is 8 positions, but I waiting on the Secretary’s final count, but it looks like there is only 8 nominations (not all the same as last year), so they would get in by default.

Now that all our new regular series have started, we can’t rest on our laurels yet. These regular series have a habit of finishing, so we continue to offer possible alternatives in the form of first episode preview screenings. Tonight we will have two such previews, expanding your knowledge of Japanese anime.

Committee member roles

With the annual JAFWA elections coming up, we thought we would give you a quick synopsis of what the committee positions involve.

We will be voting for 8 committee members, in no particular position. Once elected, these 8 individuals decide amongst themselves as to whom will fulfil which of the following roles:

• President – (aka Shogun) Hours: 5 hours per week average.
  What is involved? Talking with other like-minded groups, attending their meetings where possible, maintaining strong connections and relationships. Looking for opportunities to grow and develop the club and the best path to achieve success.
  What sort of person is needed? Someone with charisma and charm, strong interpersonal skills, negotiation skills, foresight, the strength to make decisions but also to hear opinions and weigh both to find what is the best outcome, and dedication to the club and it’s success.
• Vice President – backup for President
• Secretary – Time required for the job varies considerably. On those weeks where there is no survey: 1-3 hours. On those weeks where there is a survey: 5-8 hours.
  Tasks Include: Taking minutes at the monthly JAFWA committee meeting, creating and reworking the yearly schedule (with input from other committee members), preparing the monthly and special surveys, tabulating the results from each survey, and managing JAFWA’s correspondence with the state Government (in regards to our incorporation as a not for profit club).
  The Secretary’s job would normally include managing memberships as well, but that task has graciously been taken on by other committee members (at least for now).
  The job of Secretary would suit someone who: Likes writing things down, can express themselves well (at least in written form, spontaneous wit is not a requirement for this job), enjoys the logic puzzle of scheduling, wants to help create a JAFWA programme that everyone can enjoy.
• Treasurer – aka person who should know where all the money is.
• General Committe member * 4 – Hours: various.
  Role: the 4 General committee members provide much needed support to the business of the JAFWA committee. Watching previews of new shows, looking for specials, thinking of improvements and undertaking actions to make ideas into reality, assisting the Secretary and Treasurer with tasks such as accounts and the JAFWA website/Facebook pages – there is a place for anyone’s existing skillset and opportunities to develop new skills.

• Saturday July 15^th 2017 — JAFWA election during Dinner Break.
• Thursday July 20^th 2017 — All 3 Evangelion movies showing in selected cinemas. All 3 movies will screen as a marathon at Hoyts Carousel and Event Innaloo at 12:30 Sunday 23rd July.
• Sunday August 20^th 2017 — Collector Zone! Toy and Hobby Fair at Craigie Leisure Centre.
• August 24^th – September 20^th 2017 — Studio Ghibli movies at cinemas – see Celebrate Studio Ghibli
• November 1^st to 5^th 2017 — Japanese Film Festival at Hoyts Carousel, Cannington.

Synopsis

Atom: The Beginning

This series is a prequel to Osamu Tezuka’s “Astro Boy” series, depicting the events up until the birth of Astro Boy.

This evening’s Episode: “Pursuing the Respective Leads”

A multipurpose private detective investigating in lab 7’s junkyard is caught by A106, Ran and Ummataro who brand him as suspicious and inquire about his intentions. He tells them that he is searching for a robot pet named Malon which has a huge reward.

Little Witch Academia

Akko Kagari enrolls into Luna Nova Academy, a school for young witches, after being inspired at a young age by a witch named Shiny Chariot, and often spends her days hanging with her classmates, Lotte and Sucy. However, she has trouble paying attention in class, doesn’t know how to ride her broom, and is often looked down upon for admiring Chariot, whom many believe gives the wrong impression about witches.

This evening’s Episode: “Akko’s Adventure in Sucy / Sleeping Sucy”

After drinking her own ominous energy drink formula, Sucy winds up in a deep sleep with mushrooms growing around her body. Unable to ask for a teacher’s help out of fear of expulsion, Akko has Lotte send her into Sucy’s dreams so she can find out how to cure her.

Udon no Kuni no Kiniro Kemari (The Golden Furball of Udon Country) (aka Poco’s Udon World)

Souta Tawara was the son of a noodle restaurant owner. Born and raised in Kagawa Prefecture (a.k.a the Udon Prefecture), he had been living an uneventful life in Tokyo as a web designer. After his father’s demise he returns home to find the restaurant having gone out of business and a young boy that he names Poco hiding there. He grows fond of him and decides to take care of him and constantly worries about what would happen to Poco once he leaves. He regrets leaving his home and his father because of his selfishness and mentions it to his big sister when she expresses her regret of being unable give their father a grandchild. His time spent with Poco often reminds him of how his father lovingly took care of him, which further adds to his regrets.

This evening’s Episode: “Yashima”

retro series – Read or Die

An alternate history world where the British Empire has remained a major superpower. The Empire’s continued existence is guaranteed by the British Library, an external intelligence agency working within the actual British Library and its Special Operations Division. We follow the adventures of Yomiko Readman, also known as “The Paper”, a superhuman agent of the Library’s Special Operations.

Tonight’s Episode: “episode Two”

In London, Joker and the British Library staff uncovers evidence that someone has created various super-powered clones (or “I-Jin”) of famous historical figures. The I-Jin, led by a clone of Ikkyu Soujun, are trying to steal the sheet music in Yomiko’s book. An opportunity to strike back presemts itself in India, but the I–Jin have their own agent there.

preview item – Knights and Magic

A world where medieval knights use giant robots called Silhouette Knights to fight against demon beasts, magical ravenous animals that devour everything on sight. Tsubasa Kurata is a mecha otaku from Japan who gets killed in a car accident. Tsubasa is reincarnated in this new parallel world as Ernesti “Eru” Echevallia, a boy born into a noble family. Tsubasa’s previous otaku memories inspire Ernesti into creating his own Silhouette Knight in order to defend his kingdom.

Tonight’s Episode: “Robots & Fantasy”

Tsubasa Kurata, a company programmer and a mecha model fan, is killed in a car accident. Tsubasa is reincarnated as a young boy named Ernesti “Eru” Echevarria in a world where magic exist. After witnessing his father Mathias defeating a demon beast in a mech called Silhouette Knight, Eru wants to become a Knight Runner, a Silhouette Knight pilot, so that he too can ride one as well.

Lupin III (series 4 from 2015)

The internationally infamous Arsène Lupin, master thief and unrepentant womanizer, continues to seek out ever more challenging heists to pull off. With him goes an eccentric band of misfits; Jigen the scruffy sharpshooter, Fujiko the femme fatal of dubious loyalty, and Goemon the stoic swordsman. And close on their heels no matter where Lupin and his gang end up, the unrelenting Inspector Zenigata. Determined to put Lupin and his cohorts in prison for the seemingly endless list burglaries and thefts they have already pulled off.

Tonight’s Episode: “The Fake Fantasista”

Mauro Brozzi, a popular footballer, asks Lupin for help to steal a medical record from a dangerous criminal’s well patrolled mansion that proves he’s using doping in order to fight off his upcoming blindness. Lupin agrees, asking in exchange that Brozzi score a hat-trick in his last match before retirement.

Re: Creators

S?ta Mizushino is a young high school student and anime fan who dreams of writing his own light novel. While looking to an anime for inspiration, the iPad he is watching it on sputters and drags him into the anime’s world, where he witness a battle between the anime’s character Selesia and a mysterious girl wearing a military uniform. After returning with Selesia, S?ta discovers that other characters from different stories and forms of media were also brought to the real world, with some of them aligned with the military uniform girl, who promised them the ways to end the strife in their worlds and a way back home, unaware of her true intentions .

Tonight’s Episode: “The Extraordinary Ordinary Everyday Life Don’t worry about what others said. Just be yourself.”

Before Y?ya can battle against Mamika, Alicetaria February, a secondary character from Alicetaria of the Scarlet, arrives at the scene and escapes with Mamika. Sharing what he knows with the others, Y?ya states that he has no interest in altering his world and goes off on his own.

Preview – Onihei

From a series of Japanese historical novels written by Sh?tar? Ikenami, this is the latest adaption. In the late Edo Period of Tokugawa Shogunate, hatamoto samurai and law enforcement officer Hasegawa Heiz? Nobutame (1745-1795) supervised crackdown on arsonists and organized robbers. He was both highly skilled and merciless against criminals, who called him “Oni no Heiz?” (“Demonic Heiz?”) a.k.a. “Onihei”. These are his case files.

Tonight’s Episode: “Tanbei of Chigashira”

A thief named Kumehachi is captured and tortured by the officers of chief Heiz? Hasegawa, head of the special police who has jurisdiction over arson-robberies in Edo. Kumehachi refuses to talk saying that he kept to the principles of his former boss Tanbei of Chigashira of: never kill, never steal from the poor and never rape women. When a wooden tag with the name Tanbei of Chigashira on it is left at the scene of two robberies and massacres, Kumehachi asks Hasegawa to let him capture the person posing as his former leader.

Attack on Titan (Shingeki no Kyojin) season 2

The entirety of mankind lives encased within a series of fortified walls which protect them from the Titans, giant humanoid monsters who devour people, that roam the world beyond the outer wall. But now, after nearly a hundred years of relative safety, new Titans have appeared. The security of the walls is a thing of the past, and mankind may be facing extinction.

Tonight’s Episode: “Children”

At Connie’s village, Moblit assumes the Titans destroyed it without killing any humans. However, when he is handed a portrait of Connie’s parents, it appears that the disabled Titan is Connie’s mother. At the Forest of Giant Trees, Reiner continues to press Ymir to join them, but she’ll only help if they agree to take Christa with them. We have a flashback to Ymir’s childhood.

Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken – Stardust Crusaders (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure – Stardust Crusaders)

It’s 1989. Fifty odd years have passed since Joseph Joestar did battle with the immortal Pillar Men and now his Japanese grandson, Jotaro Kujo, finds his life turned upside down. A strange new ability awakens within his bloodline, granting him great power but threatening to kill his mother.

… An ancient enemy of the family has returned.

Tonight’s Episode: “Hol Horse and Boingo, part 2”

Hol Horse holds Polnareff at gunpoint in order to hide from Jotaro and the others, but Polnareff manages to get out of the situation thanks to a lucky sneeze. However, upon being exposed, Hol Horse spills some olive oil which causes a truck to skid out of control and almost hit Jotaro and the others, bringing Thoth’s prediction to fruition.
