Saturday 9th June, 2012

The tentative JAFWA program for Saturday 9th June 2012 is below. To be held in the Collins Street Community Center on Collins Street just off Canning Highway in South Perth.

Things of Note:
1) Final nominations for JAFWA committee election, to be held in the Dinner Break of June 16.
2) Remember to rug up, as our Hall does not have a lot of heating.

Dale’s Suggestive Remarks, based on suggestion sheets handed in at JAFWA:
A suggestion by Erin from 26-05-2012 on the topic Theme Night/Anime Request:

After seeing the response of the Sports theme for anime I have found other sport/game related anime

  • Eyeshield 21 – Gridiron/American Football
  • Giant Killing – Soccer/ EU Football
  • Kuroko’s Basketball
  • Saki (Mahjong – yes not a sport but for some reason it was listed under sport)
  • The Knight in the Area – Soccer/EU Football

Anime Request (more question)
Are we going to show the anime Bakuman this year?

Cool! Someone who has done a decent bit of research and made an elegant and erudite suggestion.
Not so Cool. It has been so long since I have been decently challenged my study habits, and geek rating has dropped. I do not recognise the majority of those anime titles. I may just have to surrender the title of alpha otaku to Erin. Should I be pleased or upset?

However, to address your specifics, I will be definitely bringing this to the attention of the JAFWA committee during the June planning meeting. The tricky thing is always determining when a theme night should be held, as quite a few people seem to be upset when they lose their regular programs. However, that being said, July has 4 scheduled JAFWA screenings, so if we keep 2 screenings for the regular program and the last Saturday for the regular monthly movie like as in most months, then that leaves us one screening that could be converted to a theme night. Or perhaps I should push to return a sports-specific anime to the JAFWA screening schedule.

We last screened “Eyeshield 21” in July 2008, after watching 74 episodes it got voted out. What other sports animes has JAFWA screened? Before that there was competitive baking in “Yakitate Japan” that lasted 52 episodes before getting voted out in 2007. JAFWA tends to have a rather wide definition of sports anime – if an anime involves competitive activity, rivalry, training, and a defined arena of conflict held to specific rules and regulations, then it probably can be considered a sports anime by JAFWA. We even previewed “Akagi – mahjong legend” as a potential sports anime, but it wasn’t considered popular enough. If we showed “Hikaru no Go” based on the ancient east asian strategy game I-Go, JAFWA will consider mahjong near enough to a sport. You may not have been at JAFWA in 2010 when we showed the mahjong madness of “Redraw – Legend of Koisumi”.

I regret to inform you that JAFWA did preview the first episode of “Bakuman” back in October 2010. Unfortunately the JAFWA audience did not particular warm to this anime about creating manga, brought to us from the author and artist team who gave us “Death Note”. However, it is permissible to start a campaign to convince the current membership that 2010 was wrong.

There was another suggestion from Nicole Roberts on 26/5/12 with the topic Profile Awareness @ Supernova that the JAFWA committee will review officially before I should be allowed to comment publicly.
