Saturday 27th August, 2011

JAFWA has a separate Event afternoon running in the same hall from 12:30 to 4:30. It is make your own fun, but we know some people will be bringing semi-automatic nerf weaponry, mahjong, video games and even sewing. Try making a Cosplay costume for the evening!.

The tentative JAFWA program for Saturday 27th August 2011 is below. To be held in the Collins Street Community Center on Collins Street just off Canning Highway in South Perth.

Things of Note:
1) JAFWA has a separate Event afternoon running in the same hall from 12:30 to 4:30. It is make your own fun, but we know some people will be bringing semi-automatic nerf weaponry, mahjong, video games and even sewing.
2) The last Bean Poll said we should just barely keep showing “Level E” by a vote of 16 to 13. This week we shall ask if we should take a break from screening “Fairy Tail” after the current story arc finishes.
3) A reminder that the Hall does not have adequate heating, so come prepare with enough layers of clothing for the Winter Season.
4) Ask and ye shall receive – Madman has put forth the trailer for Trigun – Badlands Rumble.

Dale’s Suggestive Remarks, based on suggestion sheets handed in at JAFWA:
The ever reliable Thomson Hau Yan Chow wrote on 13-08-2011 a massive missive on the topic Suggestions & Comments on Anime:

1. 2nd season of ‘Working!’ is coming in next season of anime. If we use it to take the place left by ‘Full Metal Alchemist’ we can, for once, in synch with the broadcasting over Japan, which could attract more people. (Just tell them this, we have a giant screen)
2. ‘A Certain Scientific Railgun’ has almost passed it half-way point. Would we screen its OVA?
3. As we don’t have as many OVA as before, is there any chance of screening some old, stand-alone OVA back in old days? (that means OVA series without a TV series) other than Area 88 (NOT THE TV SERIES!!!) I suggested before, I also recommend ‘Ah! My Goddess’ & ‘Sakura Wars’. Although both of them has TV series & movies, their OVAs are not related to their TV series & can be watched independently. I think we can use these retro-OVAs in lieu of movies. (when we don’t have movies to show that is).
4. Another retro piece I suggest: AWOL – Absent Without Leave. I really love this anime but, too bad, I never manage to watch all of it. Thats why I would recommend it (Part of the reason that is).
5. ‘Sacred Seven’: not bad at all. I like the ‘stone age’ style fighting. Also, Sunrise seems to get some innovation after ‘Tiger & Bunny’ (at last, not just Gundam after Gundam…). By the way, if they do something about that ‘maid stuff’, it will be better. For example: some of those maids could just wear working or combat suits with some characteristics of a maid outfit, not just always maid & maid & maid…

I had not been aware that there was a second series of “Working!” in production. It is a silly little show, that almost begs to be put on the program. Now, how would we fit that into the program? Remove “Welcome to the NHK” and free a timeslot to allow enough room for “Working!” season 2 to fit in somewhere, or wait until October when we know a timeslot will open up because we have regular series coming to an end. When does the second series of “Working!” start in Japan?
Hey, we have started screening series within a week or two of Japan (FullMetal Alchemist and Soul Eater come to mind). However, since JAFWA does take a break at least once a month, we do fall out of synch with Japan. Not to mention that an AGM practically forced us to preview a series to allow a survey/poll before making it regular also now inhibits such a Japan/JAFWA synchronisation.

You are correct, “A Certain Scientific Railgun” has definitely passed its half way point I did not know that there were any OAVs, I will have to check my suppliers. I wonder if these OAVs will contain even more, um, explicitly mature scenes and situations. And here I thought that you would instead demand that we put on the second series of “A Certain Magical Index”.

Part of the reason we don’t show as many OAVs is that there isn’t so many made these days. There is now far more room on TV channels to allow anime creators that outlet. Back when there were fewer TV channels many a production company made Original Video Animation just to show what they are capable of. Now, TV seems to swallow almost all anime production. Though evolution in the anime medium continues, we are now seeing Original Net Animations, and shows such as “Break Blade” are being released as a theatrical series rather than OAV. When is the final part of “Break Blade” to become available? My dentist does not approve of me gnashing my teeth so much.
This isn’t to say JAFWA is done with OAVs, far from it. It merely means that we will occasionally show retro series. For instance, in October we thought we would revisit “Dominion: Tank Police” based off of Masamune Shirow’s light-hearted manga about a girl and her tank.

I am not familiar with “AWOL”, for me this would be a new series not retro. I will ask around.

Finally a comment about anime we have screened recently. Specifically the sample of other anime “Sacred Seven” from Japan that we previewed last week, August 13. Perhaps I should not tell you, but Sunrise are bring out the next in their Gundam franchise – “Gundam Age”. But let us not dwell upon this, as we all know that only the first few Gundam series were any good, long before they brought in the pretty boys. “Sacred Seven” was indeed different, and I am glad to see that the I am not the only one suffering a cognitive a cognitive dissonance failure due to the surfeit of frilly, short-skirted maids. We will try something different this week, and soon I hope to preview “Ikoku meiro no Croisee” or “Hanasaku Iroha” or other goodness.
